So, perhaps the Rat King simply thought DK was a respectful monarch and wanted to extend his agreeable hand in friendship, unaware that DK is a fucking psychopath. The guard probably realized how fucking terrifying DK is but didn't really act on it until it was too late.

From what I've heard from various animators, they want to tell the story but for them animation can be too slow. They want to get their story out, and drawing frame by frame animation can make them feel like their story isn't getting out the way they want it or fast enough.

When he killed Rat King, he gained rat followers, but instead of doing anything with them he leaves a giant mouse trap out for them and waits for them to trigger it and die. When he gains more followers, he doesn't care about them even slightly and ignores their presence. When he "claims" the Mountain Kings crown, instead of adding it to his existing arsenal he openly attacks his former home and tells it to fuck off.

That only strengthens the theory. He could see the crown shape but couldn't find the bird without line of sight. Look how his eyes dart around confused when the bird puts the feathers down. He can only find it based on sight so the bird is irreverent to him, He cannot sense the bird or see the crown so he is confused whenever it's not visible.

...then the fact that he went after the bird disproves the theory because the bird is confirmed not royal according to the credits so DK has no reason to chase after it in keeping with the theory.

The reason why he went after the bird was because it looked like it was wearing a crown. DK looked confused when it's crest was down because he saw that the "crown" was no longer on the bird's head.

Exactly, that's keeping in line with the theory. Why would someone need to be royal to have a crown? Royalty are just the most likely sources of crowns but if a non royal was holding a crown it's still a crown. DK wouldn't ignore a crown laying on the ground just because it's not on a royal head. He saw a crown, the source wasn't royal so he could only follow when it was in his line of sight. This does support the royal sense theory.
