Aw man. Well in that case I guess this is a bit sad, but watching this show just makes me wish I could be a young teenager again. Except one with better friends like the Lyoko gang.

Also I think the reason I like Milly a lot is because when I was that age I had a crush on a girl a couple of years below me, but it was stupidly taboo (just like it's presented in the show) and I was too much of an anxiety riddled social reject to ever do anything about it. When I watch the first episode where she's upset about being rejected by Ulrich and then after the return to the past he decides "fuck Sissi's bullshit" and asks her to the prom anyway, it kind of breaks my heart a little bit.

While CL was airing on Miguzi here in Burgerland, Cartoon Network was also producing the "city" bumpers and it always burnt my baguettes that Teen Titans was the only Miguzi show getting to participate in them.

So I'd always tried to figure out how everything else airing on Miguzi (besides TT) would fit together in their own City Bumpers and/or interacting with Toonami offerings or other licensed shows.

Also there was a kind of meta-canon phase toward the end of the US broadcast run where Aelita would have a snarky rivalry with Ben Tennyson because all the Code Lyoko schedule slots were being systematically killed for Ben 10 reruns. In a modern interpretation of the Miguzi Cinematic Universe, they'd probably spearhead a begrudging team-up against the TTGO and Ultimate Alien casts.

It always seemed to me like Xana used the least effective means to attack the heroes given his clear demonstration of power. Season 1 Xana could override vehicles and overload power transformers. So instead of trying to drive a bus all the way across town to a chemical plant, why not just go max speed then slam into a concrete wall? Or snap a power line and drop it on one of the heroes when walking under it. Season 2 Xana was powerful enough to possess people, then why not just possess someone with a gun? Certainly more lethal than that zapping thag has no effect.

While I agree Evolution was a disservice to the CL series, I've been looking for an iTunes rip (since neither CL or CLE are on blu-ray) so the clip of the Virtualization sequence I'm using is of the best quality available.

Because there's potential. The original show was pretty good, but greatly flawed and full of underdeveloped plot threads and even ones that were dropped entirely. A reboot with a higher budget and tighter story could work in the right hands.

The rods were undisturbed for more than a decade before the series began, it should be fine. Besides, you can't make a bomb with the amount of uranium they stole (Jeremie is was shown lifting it easily), you need a large quantity.

It's kind of in the air on the second part. They had some good times there, and that factory is a genuinely great hangout. But it's also where they almost died dozens of times, where Aelita's dad did die, and the former abode of a megalomaniac AI. They might still use it, they might not, but they'll definitely seal off the Lyoko-related areas.

nuclear plant meltdowns really aren't that dangerous in the short amount of time it takes to evacuate a populace. If you get really close to the reactor, or spend a few years there, sure, but radiation is pretty benign in the small doses that people living in Pripyat or Fukushima might have experienced.

A chemical plant could be significantly worse, depending on what is stored where the bus hits. Still, not everything is flammable. It might just be dangerous to the bus.

An episode dedicated to demonstrating how the super computer can't resurrect the dead. It would have been interesting to watch the kid's discover this truth for themselves, instead of the writers just telling us. To raise the stakes even higher, maybe this is the episode where the kid's discover XANA can possess humans,

Maybe it could have gone something like this.

Episode opens with the kids eating breakfast/lunch/dinner in the cafe. Yumi is reading a newspaper and remarks how a serial killer has just escaped from prison. Odd laughs and suggests that after all the weird appliances and things XANA has possessed in the past, taking over this guy's brain might actually be more than they could handle. Jeremy shakes his head, convinced XANA could never manipulate something as complex as the human brain.

Well, shalom, shalah, XANA can, and XANA does. Only this time it pulls out all the stops and goes for a pincer attack - activating two towers at once.

The first tower possesses the serial killer. The second manifests in a forest and infects a hive of venomous insects. Maybe hornets?

Anyhow, both the serial killer and the bugs storm the campus at the same time, but only when XANA knows the kids are split between classes. This forces Jeremy, Aelita, and Odd to take Lyoko themselves while Yumi and Ulrich try and keep XANA's drones from butchering everyone.

Between the bugs and the serial killer, XANA has eyes in the sky and on the ground. Ulrich and Yumi manage to barricade themselves and a few hapless saps inside the school, but the bugs are closing in, and it's been too long since they've seen the serial killer out and about. The campus is an even bigger mass of confusion than usual, because the serial killer's presence would have the police on campus as well.

At first they'll think it was just a dream as the gang undo the day XANA kidnapped them. But then another return is made, and another, then more after. Each return, the victim becomes aware that they are indeed reliving those specific days.

On Lyoko, things are eerily quiet. Aelita wonders if pulling two towers at once is preventing XANA from manufacturing monsters. It's at that moment they round a corner and drop into a literal monster house, rouge-like style. Facing more monsters than one person can reasonably handle, Odd is forced to change his play style and stealth/tank for Aelita as much as possible while Jeremy directs all of the super computer's available resources towards buffing him.

The serial killer breaks his way inside the gym and goes straight for the kids. Jim tanks a few knives to make a grab at the killer's throat and gives Ulrich and Yumi a chance to get away. But as they break for the woods, a gunshot rings out from inside the gymnasium.

When the serial killer finally closes in on them, the kids are flanked by the hornets on all sides. Just when it looks like Ulrich and Yumi are done for, Aelita deactivates the tower controlling the bugs.

So, naturally, the hornets do what they do best, and sting the fuck out of the big, sweaty, lunatic serial killer.

On Lyoko, Odd and Aelita are de-virtualized gunning it for the second tower, so it's down to the wire for Ulrich and Yumi.

But as it turns out, the serial killer is deathly allergic to hornet venom. The killer collapses, falls into shock, and dies on scene. Finally stripped of its resources, XANA's ghost expires and retreats to the net, giving the Lyoko team enough time to deactivate the second tower.

The kids debate whether or not to roll a return to the past, but when the principal calls them in to let them know Jim's condition is likely terminal, they flip the switch.

The episode ends with Yumi reading the same newspaper. The kid's are all pretty somber, until Jim appears behind them and makes some wise crack at Jeremy and Odd for being skinny bitches. The kid's smile and invite Jim to sit with them. After breakfast, Yumi pulls Jeremy aside and directs his attention to an article in the newspaper...

"SERIAL KILLER FOUND DEAD IN HIS CELL." Yumi goes to explain how the killer was found covered from head to toe in bright, red welts. Based on her testimony, Jeremy concludes the killer must have died of the wounds he sustained from the hornets, which leads to the revelation that a return to the past will not resurrect the dead, but simply return them to the past with clues to their actual demise still intact.

The episode concludes with Yumi and Jeremy pulling the rest of the crew aside and insisting they have something urgent they need to tell them.

I feel like this could work for a kid's show, since the kid's aren't directly responsible for the killer's demise. No party involved (apart from perhaps the killer, who's arguably the victim here) knew about his allergy, so the circumstances leading to his death were largely nonnegotiable.

All of this is on the spot, though. There are probably flaws and minor details that have been overlooked.

Amusingly, I self-inserted as Ulrich and paid more attention to their relationship as a result.

I actually prefer the french theme to the English dub song. Don't get me wrong, I fucking love the instrumental (could use a little less of the guitar) but something about the way the guy sings it with the auto tune(?) always annoyed me as a kid.

Jeremie's voice in the earlier seasons also bothered me for how nasally it was. In my head I always compared it to a chronic sinus infection. I liked it better in the later seasons. In the English dub did they keep the voice actor for the character but the VA gradually stopped being so nasally for him (I know they also did the voice for Aelita) or did they get someone else?

Herve is an angry bitter Jeremie. It would've been neat to see them work together and move past whatever makes Herve hate Jeremie so much. Cranky characters are prime character development material.

Nick is an idiot, but loyal. Yet he also knows he's an idiot and doesn't think too highly of himself. I could easily see him being the type to take a bullet if he thinks it would let the others get farther. Also that self-sacrificing could get him hurt bad.

I think what I didn't get was why, when they clearly learned that at least Sissi and Herve had the capacity to be decent people when push came to shove, they never really made an effort to use that knowledge they'd gained to try and put them on friendlier terms. It's a bit jarring that they still seem to write them off even though they know that they could be helpful and maybe even friendly if given the right chance and encouragement.

You have to keep in mind that when Sissi teams up with the group, it's because XANA is attacking, and so she's doing it in order to survive. Not to say that she doesn't become friendlier/nicer, because she does. If I remember right, she actually goes as far as to put herself between one of XANA's monsters and Milly and Tamiya in one of the episodes. It's just that that happens because everyone is in mortal danger. So, the group acts nicer to her, but they don't really go out of their way to make her an ally/friend because the situations that cause her to become an ally/friend usually involve mortal danger, plus to be honest it would be really suspicious if suddenly they started acting like that.

As for Herve, we only get to see him act like that...I think once? So really, compared to Sissi who acts like that semi-consistently, the group probably has a far lesser reason to want to have anything to do with him.

Not as much as you may think. They certainly had nicer moments here and then, but things hadn't changed all that much. Hell, the reason she follows the gang is to dig up some dirt on them and accidentally reads Jeremie's video log, thinking it's a doomsday journal and panics. After the final reset, they just decided to give her a proper chance for once, something she was a bit surprised by, but accepted because she was that starved for their acceptance. All in in, it would have been nicer if she had been accepted a ways before, could have even been a way to resolve the "love triangle" of Ulrich, Yumi, and her.

Closet things we had were Jeremie literally fracturing himself into packets of data that were all slowly self-terminating when he botched virtualizing himself, and then the one time they tried testing a warp to Sector 5 or whatever with Ulrich and he wound up becoming invisible because his body had been separated in the process while his "spirit" wanders the school.
