The WWE stuff happened because Vince McMahon was a teenager in the 60s. He remembers and likes Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, and The Jetsons. That said, the Scooby movies were done by the usualy Direct-to-DVD Scooby team, so they were great. Surf's Up 2: Wavemania is an anomaly and probably a fever dream given life. Even then they still bothered to get all the wrestlers to voice themselves. Undertaker hams it up hard in the second Scooby/WWE movie, it's awesome.

Tom & Jerry stuff is basically just raw name value cash grabs. People know Tom & Jerry, people know the movies they're thrown into, they're cheap to animate, no creative process required, all that shit.

Depp did some things by the book, and others his own way. I think the results were mixed.

The best thing was that he consulted Dahl's wife regarding the author's intent. He gave Wonka a bit of an extra backstory and a father. I think this added to the story in an original way without taking away from the main plot. The downside is that at times the film was a little too Burtonesque. Weird, little mannerisms in the characters that felt perhaps a bit overdone.

He included the good bits of the book that were left out, like the story of the prince of Pondicherry who had a palace made of chocolate. And the oopma loompas were given a proper introduction too. But having them all as clones was I think a mistake.

Overall it's a good movie. People need to take off their nostalgia goggles.

The general mood and tone didn't do it any favors either. The original was very bright and colorful to really drive home how fantastical the factory is. The tone was also very light-hearted and optimistic. It looked like every child's dream, which makes sense since it's supposed to look appealing.

The Depp movie on the other hand felt like a warped, distorted mockery of the original movie. It was dark and creepy, it didn't even remotely look like something a child would want to visit. Everything was white and sterile, there was nothing fantastical about it, there was no sense of wonder. You can tell Tim Burton got his grubby hands all over the damn movie, the difference is baffling.

I know that Dahl hated the original, but honestly he can go fuck right off. It's easily the best adaption of his works.

No, it wasn't more faithful. The only thing that it had that the original movie didn't have was the Squirrel scene and the reason that got changed was because there was no way, at the time, with the technology, that they could do it.

According to multiple accounts, they spent weeks trying to make squirrel models that didn't look shit, before eventually giving up.

The Tim Burton just did what he always does when he gets to remake something. He makes his own deranged fantasy, then draw the vague face of whatever he was supposed to be adapting on top of it.

Is it possible for a t&j movie to be good? Their slapstick just works so much better in small episodes, after an hour of seeing a cat slam into a wall and become an accordian the wacky violence just starts to get stale. You cant even gets bantz like in looney tunes, it's pure physical comedy. You need more than that to carry 90 minutes, but anything other than that and it doesn't feel like t&j.

A movie just feels like it's not as good of a fit as a short episode.
