/co/'s animation side only talks about three things: mainstream shit that's popular (R&M, SU, Samurai Jack), waifubait (MLAATR, Teen Titans, SvtFoE) and the usual easy targets (Mabel in Gravity Falls, SU again, cheap CGI movies like Boss Baby and the Emoji Movie). The few exceptions are either memetic or have continuous series that allow for generals to form.

I'm not saying /co/ didn't talk about it. Hell, the only reason I heard about, watched, and ended up liking Kubo was because I saw a few threads on here about it. I'm just explaining why we're still not talking about it. Kubo was popular on here because of two things: good quality (or...kino? is that how you're supposed to use kino?) and being overshadowed by more popular movies like Zootopia (which I also liked, mind you). It's still a good movie, but the outrage has calmed down, despite the Oscar snub, because no one talks about its competitors like Zootopia anymore, so we're not talking about it.

The marketing overemphasized the animation and underemphasized the story. The voice talents seen in the trailers seemed like celebrity stunt casting rather than seasoned VAs. I didn't care about any of the characters I saw. The puppets are now so smoothly machined from 3D models that it no longer resembled stop motion animation and I thought it was CGI.

And I have to repeat: the ads sold a boring, cliche-looking story. Knowing that Laika will exist regardless of box-office income doesn't help any.

Bottom line: Travis Knight should keep doing the technical work but get Henry Selick back because he was the magic behind Coraline.

No attempt at symbolism or extra lore or connection to other works (Paranorman was lucky to come out in an era of other kids meeting supernatural stuff and Coraline could serve as a starting point for Gaiman threads)
