I think I know why the pacing felt a bit off, it kind of felt like 2 or 3 episodes shoved into one.
I think the middle episodes are going to suffer the most in terms of pacing, with things getting back to normal again at the end.
That said it was still a good episode, just not as good as the first four in my opinion.

That's a problem I had with last weeks episode. Yeah there was the Ladbybug and she liked Ladybugs and she saw Jack being kind to nature and she likes nature, but this was her whole damn life. Her being told Ladbybugs are shit would really be the end of it when she's been indoctrinated the way she has. Its a show that a lot of people hold in very high esteem, and thus have high expectations, not all of which are identical. Ashi's a pretty good representation of that.
Some people want Jack to continue to be the only focus like he was traditionally, the nostalgia trip Jack, and dislike Ashi as a result.
Others welcome the change in pacing and the feature of a new plotpoint, and thus like Ashi.
Both expectations are fine, but only one can really be lived up to, leaving the other side to be upset at how things are turning out.
I personally don't mind Ashi as long as Jack gets his fair share as well.

It felt like things were happening a bit too fast for me.
There were three plot points going on basically, learning that the world is turning against Aku due to Jack's influence(also our guy coming back), Jack showing Ashi the truth, and the children being stolen from a village and being used as weapons against Jack.
I feel like there could have been enough there to have each of those get an entire episodes worth of focus, but due to the fact we are only getting ten episodes, I can understand why they weren't.
Like I said, as the arcs reach their climax, I think the pacing will be slower.
Looks like the finale could be a two parter as well.

The pacing was bad. Episode 4, jack said he felt bad about ashi because she was there, she suffered, because of him.
The same with those kids. He might not think they are dead, but recognized they got tortured just to act as a bait for him. He thinks its better to kill himself than other people getting fucked up just to draw him as a bait (reminder of episode 1, scatbot destroyed a village to bait him).

I was upset at the whole Jack explaining the world to her, right at the campfire scene.
His correct response should have been. "I don't need to explain the Truth to you. The world as it actually is will explain itself perfectly to you and your backwards ideology."
That will upset her, but she will be hot on his tail waiting for him to do anything suspicious to the good things and people of 'Aku's creation' but instead it'd be all evil things bearing the Aku-logo do all the destroying and suffering instead.
Seeing all the positives he's done in Episode 6 would then make Ashi see the light then finally. And him admitting he can't do anything about it I thought was a revelation that would come at Episode 7 when she'll likely help Jack recover her sword.
All the ground I thought it'd cover more slowly the next couple episodes were rushed in this.

This episode might've disappointed me a bit more than the last one.
First of all, it felt very uncofuced. I mean, the first ep was pretty unfocused too, but it had more awesome shit to offer (the first fight scene, creepy visions, Scatbot). In here, it's just... ehh?
Aku kills the Scotsman but then the Scotsman is a ghost and then we forget about that entirely and then Jack and Ashi ride a serpent and the Jack shows Ashi some shit and then they fight and Jack goes with the black horseman... This truly shows how much a change of format can affect the series. This is an episode that focuses on a couple of different plotlines being developed, but we don't really get any results in either of them.
The second thing that kinda bugged me is that the drawing style and the animation are... different? They for some reason are more wacky and over-the-top in some places? I dunno, I suppose different teams of animators are still being used for different episodes or something?..
The Ashi storyline is actually not half bad, she's not entirely 'there' yet, she is just a fanatic starting to question her own beliefs when faced with reality, and she genuinely wants to do good.
The serpent scene was actually beautiful. I hope the soundtrack gets released, or at least someone puts out the music that plays in that scene.
The voice acting was also top-notch from both LaMarr and Strong, I don't think anyone'll argue with that. Boldwin's ehh... okay?
If there was anything about Ashi that I'd complain about it's the fact that her arms and feet baka didn't get crushed by those giant claw thingies. Also, the bad guy is pretty generic, I mean he's no Scatbot or even Demongo that's for sure.
Overall, the episode feels more like a filler than the previous one, which is really ironic. Everybody called the previous one a filler when it actually had more point than this one which, once again, doesn't really get anything done and is more like a transition ep between grander ones

Completely agree. The last episode was a great breather episode that let the audience relax from the last three episodes constant rising tension and allowed for Jack and Aishi to develop a chemistry.
Episode 5 felt as if Genndy went "Aw shit I only have five episodes left, I should actually go somewhere with all this". It was absolutely rushed to introduce so three different plot points into fruition and the pacing really suffered because of it.
To me this episode is the one major flaw to what has been a fantastic season so far and hope the trend won't continue.

I believe Jack made some deal with the Horseman. This deal was to test Jack and see if he would be able to prevent a selective number of innocent lives from perishing. If he failed, he would give himself to the Horseman via seppuku. Jack had one final chance in this episode, which is why he refused to fight back against those creatures in the recent episode, and ultimately began to panic once he wrongfully assumed that they had been killed.

I think that "Warrior King" version of Jack was an early idea Genndy had before he had even really conceived any of Season 5.
Personally, I don't think we'll see this version in this timeline, perhaps when he returns to the past he might eventually end up that way.
I mean... that version of Jack has a grey beard and is clearly aged.
So for the most part, I think "Warrior King" Jack has mostly been retconned, but Jack WILL fight the Blue Guardian guy again towards the end of this season.

For me it's really hard to tell at this point. I don't remember if it was the first ep of this season, but when Jack said that Aku destroyed all the time portals, I still felt like he might've been leaving out the Guardian's portal.
That particular portal seemed to be really well hidden by various characters, and I don't see Aku as really going out on his own to seek out portals to destroy. It's always just been him following Jack. I also think beating the guardian was never something Jack was supposed to do on his own. I imagined the premonition in the portal as Jack leading an army.
That said, even the portal's premonition was pretty vague.It's possible that Jack isn't even meant to go back in time at all.But again, it's pretty hard to tell at this point. Guess we'll just have to see where the ride takes us.

I think Ashi is clearly at this point like Slab Strongpunch from Mass Effect 3. A character involved and interested in Jack's situation but ignorant to the details and severity, it's obviously a gate for new viewers who may tune into S5 without seeing the previous 4.
Subsequently through Ashi they will be spoonfed why Jack is good and Aku is evil and just how good and evil by showing Jack sacrifice himself for her sake, while it is hammered in that everything Ashi assumes about Aku's rule is bad and wrong, and badong. I can't prove it, but I just find myself more convinced of her facilitating the purpose when I consider how she's directly linked to Aku and Jack but knows nothing about either and so has to watch and learn.

However others are of the mind the comments to Ashi were chiefly or only for exposition about the specific scene and no other purpose.
I'm dubious. There could have been other, simpler ways for Jack to die or genuflect, this seemed to intentionally make it a matter of dishonor to comment on his character.
Either way we'll have to wait and see, I feel the next episode is going to confirm or dismiss my point. If most of the stories Ashi hears go
