This is so true holy shit.

And I don't even understand why, fox kids was my favorite cartoon channel back then, jetix literally had to follow its steps but somewhere along the way something went wrong

It actually had mature cartoons which shown that animation should not be about comedy gags and for children.

Weirdly enough most interviewers, comic cons and /co/ seems to favor the people from Cartoonnetwork/California Arts which in my opinion are dreadful degenerates that only kept lowering the bar for ideas and writing. That's how CN has eventually degraded the way it has.

Remember when Swat Kats used to be on CN?

There were a lot of good shows, but there were a lot of bad ones too. Here are some that I remember
>Big Guy and Rusty
I literally watched this because it was in close proximity to Pokemon and Digimon. I thought it would be terrible at first, but it really grew on me.
>Robocop
>The Magician
I remember getting up at 5:00 am to watch these and I don't remember a damn thing about them, other than Robocop's theme song. It made me laugh so hard the first time I heard it that I couldn't take the show seriously.
>Beat Wars
>Beast Machines
Good shit. I thought the 3D was ugly at first, but the show being pretty plot-heavy and fairly violent got me to like it more and more. I wasn't into the the next transformers (the one with Koji, Skybite, Spychangers, and I forget what else), so I lost all interest in the series after that.
>Cybersix
I saw like, two episodes of this, and loved it. After that, it disappeared. I was very surprised it was so well-known once I was allowed on the internet.
>Godzilla
Shit taste, but American Godzilla was my favorite movie when I was a kid. I liked the show. It had some pretty cool monsters, some of them surprisingly creative.
>Sherlock Holmes in The 22nd Century
I don't know why I fucking hated this show, but I did. And I watched it for like, a whole week. Sometimes I think I watched this stuff because I enjoyed hating it.
>Monster Rancher
I know this was a Pokemon ripoff, but I watched it anyway. Pokemon was going to shit anyway, turned to garbage somewhere around Orange Islands.
>Monkey Magic
Another show I thought I'd hate, but liked once I tried it.

I remember waking up one morning, around 2003, I think, and finding out that Fox Kids was gone from my channel. I was in disbelief. Instead, they had old reruns of The Munsters before school, and after school was fucking Ellen Degenerate. The worst part is, my mom kind of liked this and watched her for a while.

I was in an area of the Southern US where for some reason the TV affiliates *hated* kids' programming and always aired shows at times when kids couldn't actually watch programming (starting kids stuff at 2pm when all the schools let out an hour later, etc.) Missed out on the first run of Pirates of Dark Water because of that...

Anyway, I always tried to hunt down the good shit like Mighty Max here or the Super Mario cartoons there, but to bring this back around... I felt like Fox Kids usually had the best bouquet of selections even if the shows didn't last long. Phantom 2040, Swamp thing, Big Guy and Rusty, Cyber Six... especially near the end of its lifespan, they started airing shows that seemed like they were desperate to find something kids would latch onto as the anime craze was buring out and as a result branched out into shows with content that wouldn't have been given a second glance years before. We the viewers would have been better for it if the shows had stuck around.

Jetix kinda did this with Oban Star Racers, but you don't really get that desperate feel of "we'll air a wide variety of stuff and hope we come up with a few hits" anymore.

I feel like a lot of you don't know the history behind the whole FoxBox/Family Channel/Jetix/Vortexx thing, so I'll break it down:
By the early 00s, Haim Saban could see that Saturday morning TV was an endangered species and that 24 hour kids' networks on cable were the new hot shit. So he signed a contract w/ the Family Channel, which was co-owned by the 700 Club (which was cozy with the Fox empire, it always came on before Fox Kids in the afternoon here), on the condition that Pat Robertson and his cronies would still get to air religious programming in the mornings. Thus, Fox Family was born. I remember being hyped because I could finally see Power Rangers in digital cable quality instead of the fuzzy, UHF signal Fox came in on in my neck of the woods. The Fox Box was actually ran by an entirely different company - 4kids.

Then Saban decided to get out of the kidvid business entirely by selling the entirety of their back catalog AND the Family Channel contract to Disney for an absurd sum that Disney never really made back their profit on - they tried their damnedest to though, that's why shows like The Tick and Digimon were being reran as late as 2009 despite not fitting the Disney vibe at all. I should note, they doubled-down on ABC Family's family-friendly feel, so most of the Saban stuff wound up on "Jetix", which was a boys' action-adventure block on Toon Disney here in the states before eventually subsuming the entire channel.

TL,DR: it's interesting to me that you can draw a straight line from Jetix's Power Rangers Generations marathons or Gargoyles reruns to their buy out of Marvel and Star Wars, inasmuch as they clearly spent the 2000s trying to get in on the "boys age 8-to-12" action demographic. And of course, after they traded up to the big boy toys they sold Saban's entire library back to him at a loss, leading to Vortexx, the short-lived experiment in doing a classic FK-style block.

I'd love to hear Jetix's history in other countries too.
>>
>>91556839
You're thinking of 2000.

I legit cannot be mad about Foxcaflowne, cuz that show was one of my gateway drugs into anime. Sure there was stuff like Sailor Moon and Samurai Pizza Cats and Dragon Ball in the syndicated slots before Fox Kids, and -mon anime like Digimon and Pokemon and Monster Rancher, but Escaflowne was so dark and artsy and weird compared to everything else, even shows like Gundam Wing that had the edginess going for them weren't as AESTHETIC.

They didn't sell back the entire Saban library, just the tokusatsu shows (and Digimon). Disney still has shows like The Tick, Eek the Cat, and Peter Pan & the Pirates.

The only show from the Saban back catalog that Vortexx aired was Lost Galaxy (for about three months). Most of the other programming on Vortexx was a mix of the 4Kids back catalog (which Saban bought along with the block during the liquidation of 4Kids), old WB shows, and stuff from Hasbro and Sony.

Didn't Ultraman Tiga/Towards the Future air on Fox? Also Superhuman Samurai Cybersquad was another toku show that came on. Man, they had a lot. MMPR, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and probably more I'm forgetting.

Spider-man was my ultimate jam though. I love everything about that show. Fantastic voice cast, the music, the plot was engaging, and it was a great way to get introduced to Marvel Comics characters in general. Daredevil had his best appearance in this show besides the Netflix series for instance. Batman had the villains as examples of psychoses personified, but Spider-man had the more personal depth with the struggles Peter Parker faced.
