Serious question.
I feel like his edginess takes a lot away from his comics. Generally, they have a sorta silver age-y feel to them, he likes silver age characters and concepts, and big, dumb explosions. His edginess is incompatible with that.
I've just started rereading Brightest Day, and the first few issues had: a mother flaying her 'family', a somali pirate threatening to rape a girl, the infamous Black Manta killing spree etc.
It's kinda hilarious
His JSA was great. He's wrecked everything else since then

Guys remember superfriends?
The dog was evil.
The answer to your question is that Alan Moore forced him to be edgy
The Mortal Kombat generation. He just enjoys hyperviolence but doesn't intend for it to be edgy.

No comic code authority.
Besides it's normal for dc comics.

>tfw he probably mains Reptile
I feel like there was an intentional decision to be "edgy". When Dan Didio and Geoff Johns became the biggest powers at DC, they decided they wanted to bring everything back to the way it was in the Silver Age, but this time without the limitations of the CCA. The classic characters but without censorship.
There was no hidden motive, they just felt it would be a good idea and create interesting stories. In some cases it worked, in some cases it didn't.

I call the era between Blackest Night and New 52 the 'Silver Edge'

Carried on until rebirth.
His sister died

I kind of feel sorry for him
He spent more than a decade trying to autistically explain and mainline every aspect of the DCU from Hawkman, Hawk and Dove, the Green Lantern Corps, Krona to the Speed Force, the Legion, Parallax, Brainiac, Superboy and so on and on...
Only for the New 52 to erase almost everything from those contributions
But I guess he got the last laugh with Rebirth

Warberbros wanted that rebooth. And it worked for the main titles.

Started with Infinite Crisis. I mean the entire central thesis in IC was "the DCU is too edgy now". Batman was a paranoid douchebag, Superman wasn't really about inspiring hope, and Wonder Woman was killing people, and when Superboy tried to come into the DCU he accidentally fucking ripped peoples' arms off.
The arc of Johns' Flash leading into IC was even about it.
I mean, whether they succeeded with this, or whether Johns is a fucking hypocrite for doing Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night after that is up for debate.I'm kind of a hypocrite even because I like BN because I see what they were trying to do with it even though in practice it was just murderporn

I feel ya
Reread BN recently, and there were some truly horrible parts (like killing Firestorm's girlfriend), but it's still one of my favorite events
(Also, Nekron was a cool in-universe explanation for how superheroes can always return. I thought it was clever.)
