I saw this coming ever since TFA was announced with a destoryed Jedi order. I want other kinds of force users anyways, but not Jedi and Sith, which the whole franchise needs to get over. Like the Baran Do Sages, more wizards like the Nightsisters, straight up knightly orders who aren't pacifist like the Jedi. That does not mean there will be noble groups in touch with the light, or benevolent masters of the arcane ways of the Force. Just no Jedi, and could we ever really say Lukes order were truly Jedi when they were only a fraction of the ten thousand knights that stood before the fall of the Republic? Obi-Wan says for a thousand generations the Jedi were guardians of peace in the galaxy.

The Jedi of the prequel trilogy are show to be very inconsistent, sometimes sending Jedi on secret missions to negotiate treaties. And eventually they were drawn into the clone wars and even given military ranks and honors.

Mace Windu allowed the jedi to transition from being true keepers of the peace to soldiers all too easily.

The PT era Jedi were too unwilling to challenge evil openly, and instead allowed them selves to become a systemic part of corrupt institutions.

Gray Jedi actually epitomize many of the behaviors of the PT jedi council. Being a "gray" Jedi is not a magical solution to the conflict between good and evil in the universe. They just really needed more actively good Jedi.
