Ring powered by rage, except their leader (Astrocitus) made it so that your blood and heart are replaced by liquid rage too. The ring also pretty much brainwashes you into constant rage, though these days most characters can power through that because having a bunch of characters with one emotion only becomes boring very quickly.

To be chosen by the ring you must have suffered some kind of great loss. After joining the corps most characters try to do something about that but most of them just up in space fighting whatever Astrocitus hates that week. If you lose the ring you die unless a blue lantern is around to use their power to regrow your heart.

It's a bit complicated. They've been Green Lantern villains but they've also been their allies so they don't really have a definite role. Mostly because DC doesn't really know what to do with anyone who isn't green or maybe yellow.

They've had a solo comic (Redthat was written by Charles Soule, I don't like it but a lot of people seem to so that could be worth checking out. There's also a GL volume called Rage of the Red Lanterns where they appear but you kind of have to read the test of Johns' GL run to fully get it.
