DC Comics was once called National Allied Publications. But their logo advertised their two biggest comics. It said "DC-Superman" on it, so when someone picked up one of their comics, they'd just call it a "DC" comic for short.

This became so prevalent that nobody called them National, they just said DC.

In the 70's National decided to just change their name to DC wholesale, but because you can't trademark two letters, they had to add "Comics" onto the end.

So while the letters DC come from Detective Comics, they don't stand for it.
