This is like, the sole thing that tempts me to watch it out of curiosity. Having a boyfriend character outright get killed is rare even in Japanese magical girl shows.

How is the tone of this compared to the rest of the series? The thing is, I kind of wanted the whole thing to be so bad that I can just shit on it and feel good about doing so, but knowing that something like this happens is ballsy enough that it prevents me from feeling wholly superior to it in principal. It just bothers me somehow that a series this terrible would get away with doing something that much better shows couldn't.

It's pretty sad. Nabu was one of the better characters in the series at that point. There was an introduction of a plant that could restore one back from death earlier on, but it's wasted either by villain, leaving him dead for good. For many years, people thought that he would come back but he hasn't and they've effectively replaced him with some generic dude.

It's also the most well animated part of the series. It was pulled off well since he was one of the bright spots of the show and made the other characters look like shit simply by being a cool guy.

Some characters do have much more fitting voices in the 4Kids dub. The Trix especially, in original Italian Icy especially sounds far more intimidating.
