I could never get anyone to go. Friends would flake and weren't in to anime, the uni's anime group was some fucking sad shit SM/DBZ only dub watching people who I didn't want to hang out with. At the time anime was just starting to take off on DVD and my massive collection of just about everything released at the time would get ohs and ahs when my younger brother would bring people by to see it. So I go to several alone, try to make friends, and see that con people are just as bad as the normal people.

I did fly to some of the bigger shows on the coasts after trying local ones in a big city. Some nicer people, but still mostly shit no matter where you go. Years later I can't even find the effort to take my anime loving other half to a con as the local ones are now $40 and $50 a day. WTF?!

Conventions are usually a private space.

Being more specific, its a space rented out by the hosts who then set their own rules. That includes allowing people to take pictures and charge for them. Now if you are snappingg photos to a point you are annoying a person in attendance, then you may be asked to stop or kicked out.

Now if you want to take picture of Batman walking down the street outside then you are free to do so. But they are under no obligation to pose for you. I believe there are also some more rules that kick in if you start making money off them. Just know its a delicate balance ever since the whole princess dye death.

I found it pretty annoying that there was a generally encouraged "ask before you take a picture policy," at the last con I recently attended, but only because I really prefer candid shots. There's a lot more potential for a better picture from a candid over an unnatural forced pose, and having to formally request a picture and then back up for a pose wastes time and holds up traffic in the con's already crowded halls over just snapping a pic real quick as you walk by. I'm not even a pervert, I honestly think the method just makes for a better picture.

I once worked at a place where there was a regular customer who was a photographer and would occasionally snap pics of us employees while we were working, and while I can see why somebody might be skeeved out by it, his work itself was great.

I remember seeing a contest years ago hosted in a german gaming magazine; readers had to send a photo displaying their "love for gaming". 3rd and 2nd places were guys who grew up with gaming, displaying their collections and rare official merchandise, one of them was dressed as Mario; winner was a angry fat girl biting a control with a sign saying YES I AM A GIRL AND I PLAY VIDEO GAMES!

I feel like part of the reason some female cosplayers get disrespected is because they're more interested in the costuming aspect than the character they're cosplaying as. More simply, they're interested in how a character looks. That's been the case with all the female cosplayers I've known.

A strong guy cosplaying as a strong guy with a sword needs to put her in her place.

I know I'm just catching this thread at the tail end of it, but if I had to say anything about the world of cosplay:

-It's a largely female dominated culture and it's probably the most (for lack of a better term) poisonous, fucking, swampy-ass, horrible, awful, "geeky" things that if anything got almost comedically worse when it became popular.

-What's worse yet is cosplayers are often their own worst enemies and it's usually just this internal 9th circle of bitch-hell where they just cat-fight one another on who's prettier, etc.. We're talking highschool-levels of social sociopathy and it is ALWAYS girls doing it.

-The 'worst' cosplayers care only about how they look, how they're seen, and don't really know anything about the character or IP beyond a very superficial level. To them this is entirely a war path to facilitate their modeling career and queen bee ego.
