He IS kind of a bad writer. I just think this project was a bit bigger of a bite than anyone was prepared to chew; time and budget restraints likely lent to M. Knight's growing disinterest in the project and desire to push something out the door and move on. Looking at the finish film, it's INCREDIBLY obvious no one fucking cared. Not the director, not the actors, not the editors.

this is the main problem, stuffing 13 hours of show into a 90-120 minute movie means a lot of stuff either has to be cut or rushed, as such you end up with a fairly barebones story that hits most of the same major plot points but doesn't work nearly as well

Although one idea for solving that problem could be to make Zuko the main character, you have less characters to juggle, less sub-plots to worry about, and he's at least as interesting a character as Aang.

Part of it was directing it like it was a horror/suspense film, because that's his wheelhouse. Part of it was talking down to it's audience, dumbing the script down so kids could follow.

This movie would have worked if they went far enough into making it its own story based on the already existing elements.

Sokka infiltrating and saving Suki.
The invasion on the Fire Palace.

Last chapter is just The Phoenix King where it all comes into fruition.
