I believe it's because it's somehow different from what we're accustomed to (not anymore since now it's more common). Women took care of girls and men took care of boys. They taught what they knew and educated them to be proper men and women when they grew up.
Now, when you have a man trying to educate a girl into being a strong and intelligent woman is more challenging because men don't know as much about raising girls if only for the gender dissonance, and that girl will be pretty masculine when she grows up due to his influence.
As to why this is more popular than women raising buys on their own, I'd say because masculinity is often seen as more of a driving force while femininity is more about being receptive, thus making it more interesting.

I might be wrong about that last part, but that's how I feel; feel free to correct me if you think otherwise.
