Comics are still nominally aimed at children. They're certainly still aimed at simpletons - look at how little it takes to get traditional comics fans riled up over fucking nothing.

Personally, I don't see any real problem with taking smoking out of the mainstream in any kind of media. It's no different to plain packaging - tobacco products are still available, but without the advertising they have no effective difference (most of which is imaginary anyway). Nobody's stopping you smoking if you want to continue - other than asserting that you can only do it in designated spaces where you can't hurt people with your second-hand smoke - but they're no longer telling you what it is you like to smoke.

Really, if you need to be told what to smoke, are you a true smoker? Or are you just a tourist.

Because it's a way in visual media to build an initial impression, if someone's only gimmick is 'guy who smokes' then you have a point but everything from the choice of what they smoke with to when they do gives indicators of thier personality.

Also why stop at smoking? Obesity is a way bigger problem, people who curse are more likley to be stressed out, and especially people who have a habit of going around punching villians are generally not a posyive influence.
