ITT: My comic is revolutionary because it depicts the female figure in a non-sexualized way that isn't meant to arouse the reader! I don't exploit her nakedness at all. R-Really!
>>
>>91422861
I don't care about this bullshit, just give me a source.
>>
well the creator's a woman, so the idea that they believe that's what they're doing is an easier pill to swallow
>>
>>91422888
The Meek

it's really

meh
>>
Wait, this comic picked back up again? I liked it, but I totally forgot about it when it went on indefinite hiatus.
>>
all you're doing is advertising this comic, you know.
>>
>>91422933
I don't hate the comic. I just think the premise behind the nudity, as well as the execution of said premise, is pretentious as hell.
>>
>>91422861
Wait... What?

How is she exploiting the characts nakedness by the single picture?

You need to explain for people who don't know about this, anon.
>>
>>91422979
The Meek is about a girl who walks naked everywhere, and is constantly under the threat of rape because of her nudity, and she magically is unable to understand why her nakedness makes her a rape magnet.

There's also a plot, too, but her nudity is ironically the main draw to the comic and the main thing people talk about regarding it.
>>
>>91422861
>naked character
>that means it is porn
when will americans learn?
>>
>>91422979
The character is topless throughout, but the art style is cutesy enough that I don't find it hypocritical like OP does
>>
>>91423001
What? Why would her being naked make her a rape magnet in the first place?

She's just fucking naked, holy shit.
>>
>>91422922
Wait what?
>>
>>91423001
I know it's been some years since I've dropped this comic, but what in the fuck
>>
>>91423034
It's a statement by the author. She writes the society of the world to be very puritanical and she gets chased down and attacked by men often for walking into towns naked.

This would make sense, if Angora was a feral child or had never worn clothing before, but she actually did used to wear clothes when she was younger and was raised in a religious environment, so her ignorance is a bit confusing.
>>
>>91423001
There are three separate storylines in the Meek, and I actually find the one with the dictator guy to be the most interesting
>is it updating again?
>>
>>91423144
It became active again toward the end of last year.
>>
>>91423185
Keel.
>>
>>91423073
Well, i mean so far from what i'm reading she seems very child like, not only that but also very naive, and un-adjusted to human society.
>>
>>91423042
Do you think a man could get away with writing a comic like this with the specific premise of it being a non-sexualized female character?
>>
>>91422861
I have been meaning to read this but I just keep forgetting it exist until /co/ brings it up
>>
>>91423249
That's a potential kink in and of itself, to be frank. Although she's not Aaron Diaz levels of cringe, I feel like the writer goes to great lengths at justifying wanting to write a story about a girl who doesn't wear clothes. To me, it would make a better statement if she didn't make a big deal about it, and also wasn't outspokenly against nudity/sexualization in other stories. It feels like overcompensating.

>>91423301
It's not bad. Definitely one of the better webcomics out there.
>>
>>91423321

Not only that, but it kinda seems like a very "pirate-ish" enviorment that the story takes place in, and yes, pirates where like that.

There is a reason they use the term "raping and pillaging" to describe there actions.

Why are you making a big deal out of the sexual parts of the story? Maybe get your mind out of the gutter.
>>
>>91423358
I don't care that she is naked. I care that the writer is telling me not to care that she is naked, instead of just trusting me not to on my own, without spelling it out. That's what annoys me in particular.
>>
>>91423408

I feel like you're overthinking this one matey.

t. Aaron Diaz
>>
>>91422861
pic unrelated, yeah? I think if she wore some skimpy clothing, it'd be more arousing than without any clothes. The comic from what I remember reading places little to no interest on exploiting her design.
>>
>>91422861

Is she sitting in a tree, or are those fleshy growths sprouting from her ass?
>>
>>91423408
Ah, i see.

I think the reason some comic artist get pushy about things like that, is because they get a ton of hate for ever showing, or not showing a female characters body.

Coming from a artist I understand it, i've gotten shit for covering too much skin, showing too much, and it's just hard to find any type of balance.

I do see how she's taken it way over the top, and i can understand how it would upset someone.

Kinda like how they do in game of thrones all the time,

"Someone is naked, we need to be sure you know they are naked, hey did you know they are naked? Cool right, now lets have a 3 min sex scene."
>>
>>91422861
Trying to make something "non-sexualized" is a fight that's doomed to fail. I'll beat off to whatever the fuck I feel like.

Is there any series that shows off the human form without making it feel sexual?
The only thing that comes immediately to mind is Attack on Titan, and that's /a/.
>>
>>91423460
Not really. I wouldn't think about it at all if I weren't told to. I just find a great irony in the whole situation, how her platonic nudity (which is admittedly attractive at times, though mostly neutral) is the main selling point of the series. At the end of the day it's still using a woman's body to sell a comic. I can't quite put my finger on why but there is something that bothers me about how the writer thinks she's making this huge bold statement that hasn't been done before.
>>
>>91423562
What do you mean, making it feel sexualized?

To be honest unless someone is out and out getting screwed, trying to get screwed, or wanting to get screwed wile naked, there is no reason to see it as being sexual.
>>
>>91423562
Most magical girl anime feature nudity in every episode that has managed to avoid offending parents for decades.
>>
>>91423584
I guess in the context of the setting.
Like the comic OPs pic is from. The girl being naked herself isn't sexual, but that all the other characters regard it as sexual makes it feel like it is to the reader too.
>>
>>91423601
Well, in most US showings, they have censored everything dipshit.
>>
>>91423584
That's what I'm talking about, though. That is why I think it's silly to pat yourself on the back for making a non sexualized nude female in your story. Non sexual nudity in art has been a thing for a long time.
>>
>>91423601
Because magical girl anime is for adult pervs.
Everyone knows why they're watching it.
>>
>>91423562
It's all in the mind of the viewer watching it. Plus not adding nipples/vagina or a penis on those titans helps with that ALOT.
>>
>>91423614
>US
There's your problem.
>>
>>91423614
It's not 1995 anymore. They've stopped censoring it ages ago.

>>91423631
You're kidding, right?
>>
>>91423636
Now that you mention it, The Meek avoids showing the nipples and vagina often too.
>>
>>91423613

I guess so, but i don't really see it that way i guess.

I've watched every episode of seikon no qwaser and i've never really stopped to jerk off to it in the process.

>>91423627

Indeed, but most of the backlash is coming from the USA anon, you used to not be legally allowed to breastfeed in public here.
>>
>>91423693
Yeah the breastfeeding thing is retarded no matter how you slice it.
>>
>>91422861
I honestly forgot about this, hows her suicidal faggot on mars story going?
>>
>>91423728

Indeed.
You know, wile i'm thinking about it, someone mentioned how most of this shit really is just from folks in the USA.

Cultural appropriation, Sexualization of the human body in it's natural form, blah blah blah.

Pretty much all the bullshit you see on tumblr, and most modern feminists, comes from the USA.

Fuck i hate our puritan heritage.
>>
>>91423811
It's a blessing and a curse, friend. We may be annoyingly prudish about sexuality but we are still one of the more open-minded countries in many aspects. Thanks to having forefathers that encouraged open-mindedness and challenging authority.

Ok caught up on this strip from years ago.
It's basically the Unsounded except the characters aren't particularly interesting let alone likeable (especially the first two introduced) and the worldbuilding is mundane and visually uninteresting. And most everyone has extra-large cartoon eyes.

Even read in a go, it plods along and fails to hold the attention.

Pages of pages of "Pinter, I desperately need your help, I am totally fucked without you, but not the the extent that I would slip on a vest or top. I know my girls swinging free distracts you badly and triggers almost every scoundrel we run across, but they gotta be free, I gotta be me!" Apparently her grandpa is in mortal danger, and she'll do anything short of putting on a jacket to save him, for raisins.

As the cherry on top, her breasts are drawn in the most non-sexual way possible, two little understated humps that usually have no nips. So there's not even that purient gratification.

3/10 I won't be revisiting this again.
>>
>>91423848
This

Wish i could have my cake and eat it too, man.
>>
>>91423852
Honestly, this.

The dictator part of the plot is excellent, but everything else is shit.
>>
>>91423852
Making her breasts saggy and deflated kind of suggests that the author thinks giving her perky breasts would be inherently sexualizing her.
>>
>>91423907
Well, she also doesn't wear clothing anon.

Oh and lackluster "political" chapters that with the exception of one, fail to draw you into any of the "intrigue". It's mainly people being rude assholes to other people for unclear or unengaging reasons. Tiger demon thing is the only interesting bit for ages, a moment when this strip actually tries to be supernaturally interesting and succeeds for a second, but then it's back to the forest of exposed boobies and alcoholism.
>>

>>
>>91424026
Maybe for larger boobs, but green girl is thin and her breasts aren't big.
>>
>>91424026
They're going to sag regardless if they're bigger than a handful. No helping that, bra or no bra.
>>
>>91423975
Not the OP, but the gist of this comic is "I am generating attention for it by having the fem lead obsessed with nakedness, but in exchange I'm going to soapbox about how wrong-bad it is for men to want women to wear clothing. Also, I don't plan to provide much of interest to distract you from these sadly drawn titties, in fact she'll constantly run into people freshly outraged about her bare girls so we can hash over that issue in case it's forgotten."

The whole effect seems less like the innocent chapters of a french comic like Wake, or the water nymph nudity in Unsounded, and more like an opportunity to be shrill as fuck.
>>
>>91424022

Yeah, it would be more intriguing to read a comic about a Muslim girl in a burka who is navigating life avoiding being raped and or forcibly married to some guy old enough to be her dad. I'm actually being serious, that would be a much more intense and cool reading experience. Muslim women who live in the Middle East are tough as nails and have to survive way worse hardships than over here.

Watching attractive women suffer always gives me a weird boner.
>>
>>91424236
It feels very weird to be bothered by this angle on it. To be honest I haven't read The Meek since it came back from histus but when I did read it I didn't feel the nudity was particularly sexual; but I did grow up reading comics where you could show a nipple and not have it be a big deal. From what I did read this is one of 3 main characters and I don't remember it being all that obnoxious, so this line of argument along with e.g. 5 month old tweets >>91424218 being provided definitely feels it's more to stir up drama, hatred or down to a personal problem with the author/comic than anything else.
>>
I didn't think she was portrayed in any particularly sexy manner, and the only rapacious dudes were the ones in a logging camp (or whatever the camp was). I don't think it was meant to represent all of society, just a shitty isolated group (one dude said she was the only girl he's seen that wasn't his sister). But the writer is definitely trying to be a look-at-me kind of writer when it comes to sexuality. One of the other story lines has a bandit lady that bandages her chest to look like a dude. This is done for disguising, which makes sense I guess since there prob would be less female bandits; but then she's got a 12 year old sidekick and she's his "girlfriend"? Sounds too bikini cowboy level of fetishism
>>
>>91424308
These are thoughts I've had to myself for a while now. I decided to make this thread to air my grievances and possibly be convinced of a new perspective, which I haven't yet, but I'm still open to the possibility. If you think me being annoyed by something is causing drama then I don't know what to tell you.

You're trying to start a circle of "You're dumb because you're bothered by thing" to which the only response is "You're dumb because you care that I'm bothered" and I don't feel like playing that game. I'm not even telling anyone not to like The Meek.
>>
wow such symbolism its like she really is she-jesus
>>
>>91424359
I got the sense that was a kid being a kid. But I also see that tweet above as being less "look at me" and more "US comics have a problem with this but they don't need to" too. I mean, I think it's ridiculous you can't have a naked person in like, Batman.
>>
>>91424401
It's not just nudity, but nudity portrayed in a way that can't be viewed as sexual. Or at least "shouldn't" be.
>>
>>91424439
which is annoying because while we need to distance it from sex to make it accepted, we then need to establish that depictions of sex aren't wrong either. the only wrong thing is doing it.
>>
>>91424181
Yes, a whole third is spent bitching about tits in the forest. That's pretty significant right there.

The remainder of the story is the constant introduction of new characters up to some vague shit that could screw up some other characters maybe but we don't know because there's no real connecting thread or context.

So you get your pick between a tight story about two assholes in a forest being petty and shitty,

Or Chapters introducing entirely new casts full of people who aren't very engaging.

It's terrible story-telling, mechanically.
>>
>>91424456
>the only wrong thing is doing it

>>
>>91422861
I'm trying hard to place why this art style/character design is so familiar. All I'm coming up with is Jitsu Wa.
>>
Nothing would sour my grapes more than if Aaron makes Kim a lesbian. /co/ bitches about Aaron incessantly and I actually don't have a beef with the man, but making Kimiko a lesbo would be the most expedient way for me to hate Aaron's guts.
>>
>>91424474
Add in a lazy release schedule with long haitus and I'll stick with stuff like Unsounded and KSB, thank you very much.
>>
>>91422930
Same. And the author gets really salty if you mention that the hiatus killed your enthusiasm for it.
>>
>>91424504
I haven't read the comic in years, but I thought I saw a panel once where Kim kisses some girl. Even as someone who loves lesbian interaction in fiction, it coming from Aaron feels too contrived and tacked on to actually feel meaningful to me.
>>
>>91424536
I was skimming it just now, saving myself for the finale of Dark Science before I read all of it, but I believe the kiss is just a ruse to fool the other woman's father. That's actually what elicited my post though. I'm suddenly afraid the kiss might spark something.
>>
I think the main problem with Americans is that it's either one or the other. A female character depicted nude or partially nude is either total eye candy or a pure maiden uguu who doesn't know what sex is. It continues to further polarize the issue instead of simplifying it.
>>
Man, I forgot how good the emperor's arc was and how disappointed I was the whole comic didn't focus on that portion of things
>>
>>91424516
Well, the enthusiasm bit definitely is true. I've defended The Meek on some points ITT because I find the nudity an odd complaint but the hiatus destroyed my interest in the comic.

It was setting up this big, interweaving fantasy-political plot that I would definitely be interested in but then took years and years off. There was a time at which The Meek and Unsounded were both at roughly the same point, chapter 3 or 4 in their story, and look at where each of them are now. That would have been about 2012.

It's very difficult to want to get back into The Meek when it's likely to be so slow you will never get into the deep plot or payoff and there's always the risk of another hiatus. From that perspective although I am also well behind on the other comic, Mare Internum, that was more interesting simply because it seemed more contained and less complex so we'd actually be more likely to see some kind of resolution.

I should say that either way I do think the artist is an excellent cartoonist, but at the same time when chapter 2 of The Meek came out it was pretty much the best thing going in webcomics and since then a lot more stuff has come out including improved and just plain professional quality stuff. I don't feel it's ahead of the pack as it once was.
>>
>>91424666
It would have continued to if it had stuck to a schedule/not gone on break for years. The plan was a trinary structure IIRC.

>>
>>91424680
>I don't feel it's ahead of the pack as it once was.
I'm OP of this thread. That may be another one of the personally irksome things that I'm having difficulty articulating too. I discovered The Meek long after its prime. Either late last year or early this year. I'd never heard of it before then, but apparently it was the first webcomic- or at least, the first good one- for a lot of people. I never had that feeling that the comic feels like something new or exciting compared to other comics because of how many high quality comics we have out there now, including like you said, once-mediocre ones that got good over time. I also don't have the ability to say that The Meek is a sentimental or nostalgic title for me compared to, say, Ava's Demon, which came out at roughly the same time and is one of the most popular and polished quality webcomics now (with a consistent release schedule I might add). The comic needs to regain its momentum now without still clinging to the "look! non sexual nudity!" gimmick to promote it.
>>
>>91422888

>>
>>91423907
Her breasts are hardly saggy, most girls who aren't porn stars won't have super-perky perfect tits. They look normal for boobs of that size.
>>
>>91424829
Well, I totally disagree with you that that is a gimmick used for promotion but yeah, I agree about how people might have run into The Meek as their first good webcomic back in the day.

>>91424860
Who said anything about porn star boobs? I'm talking about a nature shape, not those weird balloon things. Not sure if you're a girl or not, but as a girl who has been in the presence of other naked girls before, most women her age at a healthy weight tend to have perky breasts.
>>
>>91424907
*natural shape

I also forgot to mention, especially if they're athletic.
>>
I'm going to be honest though, I still find breasts attractive if they sag. I don't relate to that earlier anon who said he couldn't enjoy looking at the art because her boobs were saggy. Boobs are boobs and unless they're deformed in some way, I think they are nice to look at.

The artist doesnt know how to draw trees, so she just drew a very large and crooked penis and called it a tree since naked flesh is the only thing she is good at.
>hence the premise of this comic

>>91423554
pretty much, I can cum to a bare wall if I try hard enough. it all depends on just how pervy your mind is, humans are sexual beings. Can't be helped.

Drawing naked bodies is certainly faster and less work.

If a woman runs around naked/braless all the time, her tits will sag.

If she wears a bra, they'll sag more.

/a/, /co/, porn, and plastic surgery have all ruined your perspective.
>>
>all these permavirgins arguing about breast proportions
>>
>>91425295
You're an idiot. Breast shape has more to do with your overall physiology. Genetics, health, utrition, etc.

It's not as simple as "she doesn't wear a bra. A woman can walk around butt naked and still have perky tits, if other factors line up in her favour.

Do Americans really think this?

Lmao last time I checked up on this artist she was using he/they pronouns and got pissed at people for calling her a woman. Wonder what happened.

The last three panels should have ended differently, considering the bottom left panel.

She thought she was trans for a while in her early 20s IIRC. Got over it.

I wonder if this has anything to do with her depiction of Angora as aggressively naked.

While I do get the principle behind the encouragement and promotion of non-sexual nudity in US society, I feel like there are much better places to start than the mostly niche stuff that we read/watch on this board.
It doesn't feel like almost any book or show that doesn't already have nudity in it would be improved by having it there. If nudity is taken away from an existing work, yes it is made into a lesser work. But almost nothing of value is added in including nudity in anything that already exists because it's already made its points and told its story without it. So that's likely why it would feel gratuitous to some folks. Same with sex, really.
What the US needs is media where sex and/or nudity is just part of how that work functions and isn't a big deal. Or at least that's how I feel.
Also the Meek isn't my cup of tea. Feels kinda boring and lame. I just found this thread interesting enough to respond to.

that was literally never something an artist could control.

For a character that's supposed to be naked without being sexual in nature, she seems extremely underutilized.

We only ever see her naked in the first chapter, otherwise she's mostly wearing pants. Even then, her 'vitals' are usually obscured by scenery, angles or the frame. I don't think we see genitals even once.

It kinda feels like the author wanted a character that was naked without being sexual but realized halfway through that she could still be seen sexually, so he tried to cover her up as much as possible while still being "technically" naked. I'm not even demanding she starts flashing everything constantly but don't make it blatantly obvious you're trying to cover her most of the time. That's just self defeating.

Also, the pacing and lore is all over the place. Angora is supposedly the main character but so far, nothing indicates she should be. It seems more like an anthology than one coherent story. Also, why is she shown in flashbacks as wearing clothes yet she doesn't understand the purpose of them now?
Worldbuilding is just kinda confusing. There's no explanation of where everything is in relation to eachother and just throws random words in my direction like I'm just supposed to know what they mean. Who are these people? They obviously have a religion but it's only vaguely explained. Why are these people being persecuted? Who are they? What's the historical context behind it? It's like the author heard "show don't tell" once but has no idea how to apply it?

It was interesting at first but I kinda just zoned out as it went on.

If she has a message then why only semi nude?
>>
>>91426113
Well shit, this wasn't supposed to be a full fledged review.

TL;DR: Nude girl has no purpose, plot and lore is weirdly paced.

Joke's on her, casual nudity is my fetish.

America has nude beaches and gay pride parades where people can walk around wearing strap ons and no one blinks and eye.
