Once every 667 years, demons celebrate the appearance of the Blood Moon, the "moon of lovers" said to bind two souls together for all eternity.
It's not clear what exactly the Blood Moon actually does, if anything at all.
Marco sees it again in "Bon Bon the Birthday Clown," which seems to indicate that it does have some supernatural influence on him (and Star), but it's also possible it was just used as symbolic imagery for his thoughts going to Star in that moment.

Saying that he "had feelings" for Star is pretty strong, but it's not hard to read his actions in the episode as being more out of jealousy than actually believing that Star was in danger.
The most popular interpretation is that he was starting to crush on Star a little and Tom spurred him to act on it, in a similar but much less serious situation to Star realizing how she feels about Marco as soon as Jackie "threatens" her relationship with him in Season 2, but he interpreted Star telling him off after the Ball as a rejection of him romantically, so things never went further than that.

It seemed pretty harmless to start. But then... Things got weird.

It's hard to say. For one he was pretty bored on his own while Star was off at a party, his parents weren't home either or sleeping.

Then there's the painting telling him it's Blood Moon tonight, 'the moon of lovers'.

When they returned, he had this 'I told you so' attitude. Like going along with an agressive demon ex is a bad idea and 'I told you it was going to go to bad places'. You could make the argument here that he was just looking out for his bestie's safety. 'Never go with a predator to a second location' and all that.

But as I think and as Star has pointed out, he didn't NEED to go to the ball. It's likely that nothing bad would've really happened if he didn't show up and steal the dance Tom was probably preparing for a really long time. And if things would've went sour Star has demonstrated that she can disable Tom as a threat in an instance. (ice works really well against demons who would've thought?)

And the last thing to consider is his face after Star tells him that 'I don't need a hero, I need a friend.' He look pretty crushed here, doesn't he?

Was it because he genuinely had romatnic feelings being developed for her and was shut down OR was it because he didn't trust his bestie to deal with things on her own (a pet peeve of Star is people underestimating her) and dissappointed her. Which as her bestie he would never want to do.

Things are not exactly clear cut.

I think male Star would fall for "female" Marco.

I think this is probably the most accurate analysis.

Star didn't necessarily mean that she wasn't interested in Marco as more than a friend, but she didn't want to be babied/coddled (we know she hates people underestimating her). Marco though interpreted it as "I don't need you to be my savior in a boyfriend type of way" which is also understandable, even though that's not at all what Star was really going for.

Also Marco only really makes serious attempts at that AFTER the ball, which kinda lends credence to the idea that once he perceived Star wasn't interested in him as more than a friend, he went back to having his age-old crush on Jackie

I think this is important. In a healthy/good relationship, both parties offer something valuable for the other. Jackie is good (in general too) for Marco-she calms his anxiety and helps reassure him. But Marco doesn't really offer anything to Jackie, and he's been obsessing over her for 10 years.
