The "washing hand to prevent death in childbirth" is a very misleading thing.

It was restricted to a single ward from a single hospital where doctors made authopsyes and then assisted births right after without disinfecting their hands. The reason they discovered that in the first place is because the death rates in that particular ward where enourmously high compared to even home births.

Most of these comics and other media are aimed at the Tumblr audience. Unfortunately (or fortunately) most of this audience doesn't seem to buy anything, so overall they tend to fail.

The problem with just swapping the male main character with a female one is that most of these stories are aimed at a stereotypically male audience: lots of adventure, lots of danger, lots of fighting and stabbing stuff with a sword. Those aren't stereotypically female interests. Sure, women can like those comics too, but they tend to be in the minority. Try to make it just a barbarian story but with a princess instead and you risk never hitting your audience, with most girls picking it up not being interested and most boys avoiding it because (at a young age) they're too self-conscious to be reading about princess heroines. Try to mix it up with stereotypical female interests, and you risk alienating whatever male audience might've been there while still not interesting the female audience - along with 30-plus men not knowing how to write relationship drama well. Go the other way, sexualizing up the female main character, and you end up with the chainmail bikini comics we've been seeing since forever.

That requires good writing, which can be great when it works, but ends up like the OP comic or Danger Girl when it doesn't.

Spoiler alert: the scientific community is made of people. Have you idea of what you need to do an incontrovertible research? A lot. And medicine is even more complicate than things like physics.

Most of the times theories change not because of a single work, but because of a lot of them that taken singularly can be easily dismissed on technical reasons (not enought data, not statistically significat, no control group, the work is user dependant) but taken as a group can't.

And let's admit it, the guy didn't have incontrovertible proof. He just had data about a correlation between the use of chlorine for washing hands and the drop of childbed fevers. Correlation do not imply causation. There could have been hundreds of reasons. He himself believed that chlorine did the trick because it destroyed smell and bad vapours. Even in today scientific community an idea like that would have not been taken into consideration until much more and affidable data would have eventually surfaced, even more if the one proposing it was an asshole. Which is exactly what happened with Pasteur, which had much more proof and more affidable data than a very weak correlation.

It's easy for us to recognize his theory as right in hindsight. But it's like if today someone started saying that cheese cause deadly nightmares using as data pic related. Maybe un hundred years from now the fact would be commonly accepted and the guy heralded as a visionary rejected by his time. Right now it seems crazy.
