There's not really much of a reason to watch the entire series just to watch season 5. Samurai Jack was predominantly an episodic series where only a handful of episodes really have a connection the the overarching plot.

It's not just about canon and plot, it's about watching this character transform over the seasons. A lot of the stories were self contained but Jack was not--things he accomplished and people he befriended carried over, and his weariness grew apparent by the end of season 4.

Plus, watching all those episodes at 4:3 480p and then suddenly you're watching 16:1 1080p is fucking amazing.

Yeah, it's hard to remember, but binging the entire show before Season 5 was well worth it because everything that has happened so far now makes sense. It all makes sense. Jack was hardening more and more by the end of Season 4 already.

Eh, I never watched the original Samurai Jack as a kid. I just watched the first 3 episodes of the original before jumping into the new series because I heard those were the bare basics I needed to watch before season 5. I probably would've loved the original Samurai Jack if I watched it as a kid or in my early teens, but now it just doesn't appeal to me.

There's plenty of terrible episodes in Samurai Jack. Some episodes that /co/ worships? They're honestly awful and only have a Defense Force because of one minute scene like Jump Good's ending. Did anyone actually give a shit about the Caveman & Monkeys from the episode? I didn't.

Samurai Jack only has a certain amount of good episodes per season. And even among those you're better off skipping around for another example Jack Tales? The first short story is good, the second and third? Hollow and flat.

Genndy is a hack that can barely remember his own show's storyline. He relies on tropes and scenery to cover for the bad plot and flintstones tier animation.
I can't fathom why samurai jack fans parade jack around as some kind of mature, deep masterpiece. Even as a kid I knew the show was shallow.
Don't get me wrong I liked the show in the same way I liked dexters lab, it was a fun time waster for a kid. As soon as I discovered anime it became apparent how shallow jack was. If you compare it to any serious anime you'll know what I mean. The fight scenes were ruined by the stiff animation and serious moments were ruined by cheap stock sounds and obnoxious voice acting.
The revival has taken on a more serious tone, but still suffers from the same problems. The animation is cheap and riddled with errors, the sound effects are stock and the writing is subpar. Compare Jack to berserk, it's clear that Jack is nowhere near that quality.
How anyone could be sad about episode 4 being delayed is beyond me, I don't understand how anyone could put this show on a pedestal. I guess that speaks more about the dry spell of good cartoons in the west than it does them though.

I could never really get into it back when it was first airing, and I struggle to still.

The visual aesthetic was really unnappealing to me back then and the early stuff had a lot of garbage. And while the style has grown on me, I have trouble getting really invested in binging it.

Liking season 5 so far though.
