Pogs. It was a game from the 90's involving caps that you collected to play. Your age is showing OP

Pogs, beanie babies. Pet rocks etc. Talking Elmo. Tomigachis just fad stuff. People used to think beanie babies would have lasting value as collectables.
>>

it's like pacifica's ridiculous inability to pronounce 'sharing' or whatever

>>
>>91360916
never understood what separated a beanie baby from stuffed animals

what makes the difference?
>>
>>91360974
small PVC beads. it means that while they are less cuddly than a cotton/poly-fluff-filled stuffed animal, they are a lot more posable. you can sit them up on their fat little asses, bend them over, and they stay that way. you can move their little limbs around. Some of them had some clever use of elastic, too, like you could wrap the snake around your arm.
they also had a pretty good unified aesthetic style. i used to draw beanie baby styled animals for things they hadn't made yet, and then they made some of them (like the scorpion)
>>
>>91360956
Sorry I was just thinking of random fad shit that I remembered. Obviously talking Elmo was kiddy stuff
>>
>>91359475
Nobody talks about slammers. The Slammers were the coolest thing about pogs.
>>
>>91360974
Beanie Babies are cute. I still have a few around here somewhere. A dragon, a lion, and a tiger. Honestly, the later ones were so detailed/poseable they almost doubled as action figures.
>>
>>91361202
I still have this awesome Dragon one had gems and stuff in it.
>>
>>91361017
got any pics? that sounds super cute, i used to love beanie babies.
>>
>>91361202
I had this sick plain-looking one with a metallic finish. It must have been filled with lead or something. It could flip a stack of pawgs like a flapjack.
>>
>>91361163
yeah. must-get christmas presents for dumbass kids is a totally separate thing from collector fads. but they are both interesting and ephemeral
i hated how pogs just disappeared from my life when I had just finally gotten some real ones that I didn't make myself by cutting them out of the cardboard backing of a pad of paper. i mean, my first coupla pogs got stolen, but I still have the remaining approximately 16 inches of pogs I acquired since then, including the official pogmaker pogs that I absolutely wasted because as a kid I had no patience and had an obsessive need to use up the entirety of things.. like pads of paper.
>>91361254
plus they started making them in that uber soft fleece shit. i love it so much. sadly, my beanie babies are still in my dad's third wife's garage.

>>
>>91361301
nah I'm not sure whether I still have those drawings (probably not, those would have been from 96, my oldest saved drawings that I can easily find are from 97) but I definitely haven't scanned them.
>>91361202
>>91361306
it's sad to me how many lame slammers some people had. they kept giving out shitty plastic promotional ones. my pride and joy was a gold-plated buzzsaw slammer with the imprint of two fingertips on the other side
>>
>>91361316
I had that purple pogmaker too
>>
>>91360974

One's filled with stuffing, the other is filled with thousands upon thousands of spider eggs...
>>
>>91361342
I remember being like.. what the fuck are these, why would anyone want them? then I bought a pack just for fun, and.. gotta admit, they appealed. not sure how, but a strange appeal. I never bought any more, but I kinda get it

the games you were meant to play with them, though? Fucking impossible. just like that 'pig dice' game.
>>91361346
I was too chicken to play for keeps. kids would tell stories on the playgrounds about how they flipped entire stacks at once and acquired them. they had fuckin 3-foot-long holders made of transparent neon plastic in several colors
>>
>>91359370
I thought he meant pawgs. like he had a magazine collection of pawgs.
>>
>>91361346
I had a pretty good career, but I still remember the foil skull pog I lost. It still haunts my dreams.
>>
>>91361403
That was half the fun and I remember those huge tube stacks. I loved getting new pogs. We had a huge group of us from school so we were all trading back and forth. I had a three inch thick metal slammer so I won a lot. I was nice though if they had specific ones that they liked a lot I'd give them back
>>
Did anyone have a yoyo fad at their school?
>>
>>91361202
PIN TIN SLAMMMERS
>>
>>91361460
Right. Metal slammers were so unfair but they were great
>>
>>91361486
Briefly. But everyone sucked at it except that one weirdo, so it didn't last very long.
>>
>>91361486
Yep that lasted for a good half a year
>>
>>91361479
i remember those fucking door-unlocking-combat-shotgun-slug slammers.. i never saw the point of them. you're meant to hit the stack with a disk. you can't very well grab a 3-inch cylinder between your finger and thumb and slam it down. its only real purpose at that point is being a prop as an oil barrel for action figures
>>
>>91361486
no, i assumed the one on the simpsons was something from a writer's childhood back in the day
i remember yo-yo balls though and I wanted one so badly. a spring-loaded yo-yo that automatically winds itself back up, what's not to like?
unlike other weird toys like fucking balzak. what even was that
i always wanted those giant stylized snake plush things though
>>
>>91361683
Actually you'd be surprised I saw people using the thinner metal spammers better than the thick ones. For some reason it would flip more of stacks depending how you hit. I found some used different kinds of metal is so they were heavier
>>
>>91361202
I had a wooden souvenir one I bought at a Chargers game. It was about a cm thick and flipped everything I ever used it on. The thing was incredible.
>>
>>91361342
Fuck you. But also, I want to fuck you.
>>
>>91361785
that's what i'm saying, the thin would be better than the thick.
>>
The joke with pogs is always that they're irrelevant but I wonder when they'll be so outdated that people won't even make that joke anymore.
>>
>>91361486
Yep, when I was back in elementary school.

That was a quick fad.
>>
>>91362049
i imagine they'll outlast direct memory as a remembered joke, like pet rocks.
>>
>>91361486
yup, they were expensive yoyos though

relatively
>>
More important question:
Why does that Morty know about pogs, let alone collects them?
>>
>>91361486
If I remember correctly it led right into Pokemon.
>>
>>91360664
>underage

I dunno, man. I'm 23 and have only a very, very brief recollection of the tail end of the pog fad from when I was four or five because my older brother had them. It's more than likely somebody who's 18 or 19 doesn't know what the fuck they are.
>>
>>91362114
that's another dimension morty. pogs lasted there
>>
>>91362114
Rick showed it to him, as a joke.
>>
>>91361342
holy shit i got a fuckton of these in a knit bag some lady made me at church back in the day in my closet.

tfw I have rare chase ones that sell for decent today
>>
>>91362270
that is the great thing about pogs, they transcended all life paths. i had several fun and genuinely hip christian pogs, i had a slammer with 'know fear' on it.. on the other hand i also had hilarious pig-themed pogs handed out by the pork council
>>
>>91360916
Same shit as comics.

Collector value comes from demand and scarcity. Most of these things simply aren't scarce, and a lot of dumb speculators don't seem to realize that when they buy up a bunch of a product that's STILL being produced, all that's going to happen is the company will pump out more to meet the perceived demand.

Once people realize this stuff isn't really hard to obtain and there aren't really that many people who want it that desperately (mainly just other stupid speculators buying and selling from each other), the bottom drops out.
>>
>>91362838
And ironically enough they end up being worth less than the average shitty toy from the same period because no one bothered to save them in any good condition, but people still want to buy them to replace the childhood toys their parents threw away when they went to college.

Slammers were a cheat pog in my days of middle school. You had to do it with regular pogs or it doesn't count. Even in the realm of regular pogs, there were special ones. Still paper like, but very crisp. There were 2 sets of prized pogs, the uckoos (or however it was spelled) and these golf based ones that said eagle, birdy, etc. I can still remember the smell.
>>
>>91363065
it's weird how i know the types of things you mean, but all of those were completely different in my circles. it was all about yinyang, poison, and buzzsaw.
i cant imagine playing pogs without a slammer though
>>
>>91363126
You had to use all your strength to even get them to budge. It was an art in middleschool and pogs were just about the biggest thing for the school.
>>

>>
>>91363964
i will never understand the need to seem something knowing you arent that thing inside
>>
>>91364008
Well I was hanging out with older girls because they were babysitting younger step siblings so I was caught unaware that I even wanted it. They also shouldn't let highschool girls around younger males.
>>
>>91364148
shit okay you didnt mention there were older girls around. even kevin smith abandoned comics for a while for that reason.
>>
>>91364322
I was a big kid too so I got mistaken for older than I was. I hit six foot by twelve so. Which also made it funny during rough housing. I used to dunk their babysitter and her friends would die laughing. She hated losing though so I'd let her win sometimes. Especially when her huge breasts popped out when said horsing around happened. Trust me. Any guy you know would give up childish things.
>>
>>91364440
ditto, alas when i was 12 women were not remotely into tall and mature. they wanted little homos.

still, the secret is confidence. you make it clear that toys are awesome, they will buy it. as long as you're not sperging out. let that be a lesson to all of you. when i was in college my impressive zoids collection impressed lots of girls
dumb slutty ones i wasn't interested in, but still
>>
>>91363613
Pawgs. Phat Ass White Girls.
>>
>>91364564
Despite my impressive size I wasn't confident at all about anything besides sports. I felt by keeping by. them around it would undermine me somehow. And since I knew that I didn't know much about anything it would make it easier to spot. In end I ended up staying more true to myself though. Once I realized girls with absent parents have shit taste in guys. I dumped her hs boyfriend into garbage cans and embarrassed the shit out of him. Glad he got embarrassed because he probably beat piss out of me being 4 years older
>>
>>91359475
I'm close to Mexico so we had something different, they were called Tazos
Shit like Pokémon, Yugioh, and I think El Tigre were the ones I'm familiar with
>>
>>91364687
Fuck I had so many of those...
>>
>>91364687
We had those here in Australia too. I remember that the Dragon Ball Z ones had power levels written on them next to the character. They came in chip bags and promotional extras.
>>
>>91364628
god damn young people and their stupid vernacular
>>
>>91364687
i mean, were they just pogs under another name? or were they a different size?
also, pokemon TAS? was it called that? the animated series?
>>
>>91364687
See that's what's great about pogs
it's hard to collect LOTS of something unless it's simple and printed on paper so it's cheap
like i always kind of wanted to buy the pokemon figurines but i knew that no matter what they cost, it would be too much to get over 100 of em

i will volador when i'm good and ready
does tazo mean something or sound like it does?
i'm looking this shit up now, i find it highly amusing that they had 100 looney tunes ones, 124 tiny toons (each character must have gotten a fucking dozen different ones), and only 51 pokemon. christ guys if you had done more, sales of chips would have gone through the fucking roof. every kid would want to get the full collection.
really i feel shitty that every bag of chips i ever ate didnt come with diddly squat. then again in our nanny state they wouldnt let them come in anything but vegetables, so..

Same here in Spainistan. They came in chips bags, and back in my time we had Looney Toons, Dragon Ball, Pokemon and Digimon. We would put them face down forming a tower, and in turns we would try to brind them down by hitting the one on the top with another tazo. You won the ones that came face up from the tower.

I think it only lasted one summer. The "game" was pretty dull.
You make a small tower with small collectible disks.
You throw a plastic disc at them.
You take the ones that are upside down.
You stack the rest.
Your opponent does the same.
Who gets the most pogs wins.

>>91360086

>>
>>91360664
I hate to break it to you friend, but we're old men now. Most 18 year olds have never heard of pogs.
>>
Pogs were a thing, then Crazy Bones, then Yo-Yos, then Pokemon. Pokemon stuck. Kind of grew out of toy fads beyond that. Anyone younger than me know what was the big thing after Pokemon?
>>
kids today google, not giggle. they play angry birds instead of getting angry AT birds. they all have an ipad but no iq. not even one. they playstation but they never play station. i.e. one pretending to be a train and the others pretending to be different trains or low paid maintenance workers. they’re obsessed with one direction, rather than enjoying all eight directions equally. facebook… but unable to face… a book. or a hoop with a stick. a lost generation. the tv show.
>>
I still have a thick plastic pog with Mortal Kombat dragon logo on it, that I treasure very much. My spawn will be very surprised when they open my testament, fucking brats.

for my area yugioh was pretty big 6th grade
circa 02-03, pokemon died out mid 2000, and dbz had teetered a bit to let yugioh on top.
>>
>>91360664
Your generation really likes to wank off how old you are so that you appear wiser when it comes time for you to give an opinion. Of course people know what pogs are, they're referenced in several episodes of Simpsons, which is the foundation of most people post-1989's sense of humor. Aside from that, most media aimed at younger people is made by people of your generation, the youngest people who are able to be the crative leads in stuff, look how many shows have so many jokes based in 80's nostalgia. Look at every other reboot of an 80's property.

OP is clearly a troll, playing at your insecurity about your age. Grow up and stop feeding them, dude.

These silicone spiky ball things were popular in my school for a short while, but they got banned because some dumb shit managed to choke to death on one. They were bigger then a child's fist, mind you. There was also a small, 6 inch deep pond that got filled in because some chuckle fuck managed to drown in it.

The problem with public schools is that they have to accommodate for the absolute stupidest children in the group. And in a group of hundreds on hundreds of very young kids, there's going to be at least one ridiculously slow motherfucker setting the pace for the rest of them.

Beyblades were huge for a long time. There was even an anime about it. They were just spinning tops, you spun them with some thing that got them up to speed instantly and the funnel shape of the arena would make them hit each other and "battle". The arenas were flimsy as shit though so they would periodically break apart under the stress.

You can't just take 8 cross 8, there's tons of overlap. There aren't 4*4 cardinal 3D directions, there are only 6. So why would there be 8*8 inter-cardinal ones?

Number of inter-cardinal directions for N-dimensions is 3^n - 1. You can think of it as a sub-divided cube 3x3x3, not counting the mid-point.

I kept hurting my fingers when I fucked up tricks and slammed the hard plastic balls into my knuckles and shit. I also knew a kid with a Saturn Astrojax which had a bunch of LEDs inside the balls that lit up when you played with it. Shit was so cool.

we called them tazos in slavland as well
I had tons of pokemon ones, collected quite a bit of ben10 ones as well when it was a thing

I was trying to remember the name of those things. I had one of the early models, where it was just plain blue balls. They were interesting, although I couldn't do that much with them.

This shit is awesome though, unless you don't know how to skateboard. Like my brother!

>Never again.

Fucking Tickle Me Elmo.

>Mom waits in line 3 hours and fights off horde of people to get one.
>Brings it home all elastic about how she got it for us.
>Me and my brothers all staring at her like she is crazy since the youngest of us is 11
>Youngest presses the button.
>Watches it giggle and vibrate.
>A good 5 second pause before he blankly stares at my mom and says in the most dead tone ever "....why....."

I've never seen my mom more angry than that day.

I had something like this, but it was silver, and had a snake on it I think.
It was so heavy it was pretty unfair.

Pogs were definitely a thing in Canada, you're just too young. Also, I feel like they vanished more completely and suddenly than Pokemon, beanie babies, tamigotchis, etc.
>>
>>91367732
I recently found my Pogs. I cringed so hard you could hear it from the other room. Then showed them to no one.

is that what the staple was for? I remember lots of official pogs had an indented line in them seemingly to represent it
but those weren't so much official as they were literal. the caps of pineapple orange guava, or else of milk.. because that's how those products came in hawaii.
the world pog federation came after that

what you mean like dodgeball/bombardment?

i remember if you made an L-shape out of duplos and held the shorter end with the longer end up and facing forward, you got scolded for 'making a gun' and ordered to dismantle it
>>
>>91403232
I used to have really cringey unpleasant sorta fantasy-sequences about either being or seeming to be or witnessing ungratefulness. somehow it just felt like the worst thing in the world, possibly because i was always so greedy but always extremely appreciative of anything I got, feeling simultaneously deprived and overwhelmed with abundance.
I think I would at least have told her how much I appreciate that, and how she just made some little kid's christmas.

You ever notice how our Rick and Morty are significantly more intelligent than all other Ricks and Morties? I found it particularly noticeable in this scene. Our Morty would never interrupt a hearing just to ask if someone wants to look at his pog collection.
>>
>>91407152
I think it's just that Rick is the least full-of-himself Rick. thus naturally all the other Mortys have been bullied into not just doing what he says but also idolizing him or else. This Rick at least doesn't need that. he thinks anyone who demands respect is just showing their insecurity.
so this Morty isn't exactly smarter so much as he is willing to call anyone on their bullshit, even Rick. He's done it like 10 times and Rick's only reaction was to prove him wrong, not to try to punish him for it
>>
>>91407152
I mean it goes without saying that the Rickiest Rick would have the Mortiest Morty
>>
>>91407484
Wouldn't the Mortiest Morty were the stupidest

>>91407578
that implies that the measure of being-yourself is your deviation from an imaginary medium standard

>Nah it lasted longer than that, I was born in 91 and had a huge pog collection by the time I was 7 or 8.

Really? Cause it seemed like Pogs died out by 95 or 96. Maybe there were a few companies hanging on or something or maybe a regional thing.
>>
>>91369516
I still hear them mentioned in shows and stuff but never by anyone under the age of like 40 and it is never important to the plot of an episode. Still though, pogs are talked about more than people notice.
>>
>>91413102
but people in their 40s would have been over 18 when pogs came out

Dude, I know EXACTLY what you mean
I also used to have fantasies about my kid self getting a video game for his birthday and slowly getting addicted, causing me to neglect my friendships and making my parents sad
There's either some repressed trauma behind these thought schemes or I'm just extremely autistic, who knows
>>

I really think it's just a case of an instruction becoming something you actually know and believe. the change from being just raw behavioral conditioning to something you genuinely feel is kinda ... it's gotta be a difficult transition.
I know I have something like that for like.. my dad used to always tell me stuff like "these people are stealing cable, but don't make a big thing about it, they've invited us over" or "they're catholic, so their prayer sounds kinda weird, but don't make em feel self-concious, we're guests here" or like "your mom's feeling really fat right now, so don't say anything that might make her feel bad" and i'm .. i'm fucking TWO, but I remember feeling like 'uh, she's not fat. she's pregnant with my little sister'
but in their defense, i was ALWAYS saying shit that I had no idea it wasn't allowed, and wished they warned me before skipping right to punishment, so I guess I can't get too mad for overcompensating
