The problem with this is there are valid reasons to ignore pain just as there are valid reasons to ignore love. For example if you are alone and break your leg in the woods, you will have to ignore the pain and drag yourself back to civilization.
>>
>>91357679
IMO, lust/infatuation is a chemical reaction. Love is a choice to stay with and continue to serve someone after the reaction has run its course.
>>
>>91360229

That's literally autistic.

You're debating something that's not possible.

You will feel pain, and you will feel love.

That's the point of the comic. Chemical reactions are real.

Ecept it's a strawman that he is arguing against. Saying love is a chemical reaction is meant to (pardon the quasi-pun) de-romanticize it. Most people can't even define love, let alone know what it is, beyond a good feeling, and because of this they tout it up as this magical, miraculous event. The reality is that it is indeed a chemical reaction that compells you to stick with a mate, breed, raise children and see your species survive.

Yes that is true, but remember, given the context of the show - Rick is an asshole who's just making up excuses for being a shitty parental figure. Since love is just a chemical reaction, I don't have to be a good father! Say what you want of Jerry's mediocrity, he's never shown himself to be a bad father like Rick.

Rick and Morty doesn't advocate for nihilism. On the contrary, it explores characters trying to find meaning in a meaningless world. The purpose of Morty's speech to Summer is that you shouldn't find purpose in Rick is that Rick represents a void of meaning in a meaningless world.

Indeed, but Rick isn't wrong in his statement, just the conclusion he draws from it. Just because something isn't a mystical thing, beyond humanity's ability to properly describe it, that doesn't make it any less real or a reason to seek it realized if it is what you value.

Yes but by realising that nothing matters you are freed from the philosophies that held you back and gain th realization that you are free to find your own meaning.

The two go hand in hand, if you have no love for humanity, the world, the pursuit of knowledge, scientific endeavours; fucking whatever, then there's no inherent purpose for you to focus on science. People aren't robots.
>>
>>91363335
Yes yes, I agree with you. We shouldn't mystify romance. That, however, doesn't negate its importance. What Rick, and the guy in the comic are doing - this is SMBC we're talking about, he completely agrees with idea that everything is chemistry - is using that fact to justify something else. Most people who argue using that foundation usually do so to justify trivializing them.

That statement means nothing. If you're free to find your own meaning, then you're free to choose the same meanings as others or to develop meanings that are identical.

Nietzsche was just saying to find meaning that is of this world, rather than relying on meanings derived from an idyllic other world, like religion.

It's funny because there is a great misconception about Academia. Many believe there is a general consensus on the subject of God, spirituality, the after life, etc. But no such consensus exists. In fact, in the medical field Theists make up a majority. Those who have done work on ESP and Near Death experience have been converted to believe in both Supernatural powers and the reality of the after life.

No, it's painfully obvious Rick likes his grandkids and all he says is smoke and mirrors because he's an emotionally fragile old man. There's no reason for Rick to drag along Morty other than to hang out with him, and it is implied that Rick showed up one day out of the blue, presumably to foster a better relationship with his family. In that episode where he dives in to save him, he says he wants Morty to grow up better than him, which is probably the reason he is taking him on the adventures in the first place. He additionally lied about Morty giving into his rage in the purge episode, with no other reason than to preserve Morty's sense of self.

But pain is a chemical reaction. It's not that you don't believe in the reaction, it's that you believe you should place value on it and go about halting or changing your entire life because of it.

When people say love is a chemical reaction, they mean don't get your panties in a twist and assume a relationship is the end all be all, because it's varying degrees of a mix of lust and liking someone. Similarly, pain is varying degrees of displeasure. You shouldn't put your whole life on halt because you experienced pain one time and you find it mystical for some reason. Like love, you'll probably feel it again, and if you want to feel it right now, you can use chemicals and drugs to simulate the feeling.

>>
>>91360282
>Chemical reactions are real.
They are, but that's beside the point. For instance, people are already quite pragmatic about pain management, but "love management" is looked down upon. If you tell someone you're trying to ignore, reduce or get over your feelings of love (or more realistically, infatuation that you call "love"), you are not going to get encouragement in response. No, what people typically will tell you is that you should embrace your feelings. They don't even consider if these feelings are objectively good or bad for your long-term well-being. This thread itself shows how eager people are to defend love. So when someone non-stupid says love is chemistry, what they mean is that you should be pragmatic about it.

What the fuck are you smoking? Anti-atheism is more popular than it has ever been since the mid-90's.

Monotheism is a disease that thrives under persecution. The second Christians felt threatened by atheism our culture shifted to oppose it. That's why you see all this "le epic neckbeard fedora" bullshit the second anyone criticizes the blatant insanity and evil of organized religion. You used to be able to have a reasonable discussion about religion without religious people coming in to shit it up with their mental retardation. You used to be able to laugh them away.

This comic is idiotic and self-defeating

Everyone knows and understands that pain is mechanical and easily manipulated. If we feel pain we look for what exactly is causing it and then attempt to fix the problem.

Have a headache? Take a painkiller, drink some water, pain go away.
Cut your hand? Disinfect wound, apply bandage, take painkiller, avoid vigorous use of hand, pain go away.
Get kicked in the balls by smug pseudo-intellectual? Move away from assailant, apply cool compress to balls, file assault charges, pain go away.

But love? People treat it like it's quite literally magical as if it isn't ultimately mechanical in the same way, just much more elaborate. People act like it's something that just happens that you can't do anything to control and that even trying to is somehow morally degenerate.

Not to mention how concepts like "Fate" are so often drawn into the discussion.
>>
>>91367179

Have you considered that being smug on the internet is an absolutely tiny moral crime compared to the shit that is routinely excused because of religious motives?

Atheists and liberals go hand in hand, and the latter especially have labored hard for years to weaken institutions and reshape the social climate so it would benefit their political agendas at the cost of exacerbated partisanship, worsened racial relations, SJW culture, etc. So no, it's not just an Internet thing.

The Medieval Catholic Church did, indeed, encourage studying math and science as a way of better understanding God's creation.

I don't know as much about Medieval Islam other than it enjoyed the Islamic Golden Age, making many breakthroughs in math and medicine, and preserving and sharing Greek knowledge.

I'm certain other religions have similar histories.

I'm an atheist, but religion isn't all bad. It's also been important to liberation movements, like ending slavery in America.

Only statements exist. We categorize them into facts or opinions based on our certainty in their truth value.

If you want to argue deep skepticism, you'll need to abandon your belief in the certainty of everything save the existence of qualia. The only way to avoid pure skepticism is to accept certain things axiomatically. If you accept axioms, facts exist. Even if you don't, the existence of qualia is an indisputable truth. Qualia is a fact. Facts exist.

Denying qualia is paradoxically impossible. You can deny everything else. You can deny the external world, the existence of a persistent self, etc. It just turns out to be a philosophical dead end.

At the time, no, he genuinely cared.

Then the writers fucked themselves over and now after S3E1, anything he says will have to be interpreted as a lie. Don't know why they went that direction, and that episode was still good. It's just the show is now leaning way too heavily in the "Rick is actually 100% a dick" direction now.

This season might be like what Bojack Horseman Season 3 was like. Where you think they may have actually progressed as a character, but then they just revert and reveal they had no development as a character. Only difference is Bojack ended on a note which suggests maybe he'll start to develop. Frankly I don't expect R&M to touch upon Rick's garage rant except for 1 or 2 episodes.

Love is an emotion, and the chemical process emotions undergo is an involuntary one. Those reactions can't be controlled (unless you're taking a pill or something). This is why when a loved one/pet dies, you feel like shit for a while.

The way Rick uttered that line made him sound like you're typical "I'm above love because I'm enlightened" person. Which is bullshit of course, because after Unity dumped his ass he got so depressed he tried to off himself.

This is also the point of the comic, because the kind of people that say shit like "Love is just a chemical reaction" are usually the kind of people that think they're above it. You gotta give the comic credit for not making the guy getting kicked a fat, fedora wearing neckbeard.

You know, I have this theory about the season premier, namely the real reason it was released on April Fool's: Rick didn't actually escape on his own. The second episode of the season will have him wake up, still in prison and the world still controlled by the Galactic Government.

And for the remainder of the season,
Rick actually ends up regularly blindsided and caught off-guard by his enemies because he keeps underestimating them. In otherwords:
a season which throws back all of Rick's own words at himself. Nothing he does matters because there's always a bigger fish, it becomes the darkest year of their adventures because Rick can't solve problems or just run away like he usually does, and generally gets humble pie forced up his ass.

This is how I like to think of it. Whilst the initial trigger of the love response can be attributed to a chemical reaction designed to drive us to mate, what subsequently follows that chemical reaction is cognition. We rationalise this initial feeling of attraction by applying it to our own thoughts and ideals and we weigh up the other person's identity with our own. In that sense, love is very much a non-physical, intellectual process in that it requires us to find common ground with the object of our affections. In this day and age, we get to understand them on a level that extends beyond the physical and the chemical and that is ultimately what allows love to blossom into the magical force that we often propagate it as.

It might fade and it might waver, but I fully endorse the existence of real, intangible love that can't be explained away as pure science and logic. I'm nowhere near that cynical or egotistical yet.

Experiments conducted a few years ago with thermal cameras proved that emotions exist in some physical form. Depending on how they were feeling, their arm could be cold, warm, a mix or both, ect.

You know the revelation of love being a chemical reaction that's biologically intended to motivate procreation doesn't actually devalue the actual emotion.

It just gives it a backbone and grounding and not just "love is actually made of fairy dust and angel kisses" explanation. Love and romance still exist as they are and mean a lot emotionally.

People are missing the whole point, that Rick is a bitter lonely asshole who doesn't want to feel love and will take any chance he can get to take the piss out of it
