Rick and Morty is just perfect for its demographic: these same college-age self-important Bernouts who "fucking love science". The entire foundation of the show is built upon the dichotomy between "silly sci-fi humor and references" and " things are super deep and tragic bro". This pseudo-intellectual "nothing even matters, I'm insecure about existence, we are all going to die" bullshit that R&M shits out in almost every episode is what appeals to it's audience. The show doesn't actually have the tact to even begin to offer an interesting presentation and discussion of any philosophy, so it spouts these edgy teenage catchphrases. Nevermind the bean-headed, noodle-limbed unexpressive character design, or how the story is non-existent and only comes up when the writers beg you to feel something for these characters so devoid of substance, or how the entire show is a trendy forgettable scenario of the week memefest with just enough sci-fi references to trick kids into thinking they are smart for understanding them, or how the characters have somehow been reduced to even more obnoxious caricatures than before, none of these things matter. What matters is that it appeals to the millenial redditor audience, and that's what's selling Rick and Morty

You say it has no depth while also pointing out that it combines elements with "silly scifi" "deep and tragic" and bits of nihilism. That seems relatively substantial for what is a bizarre nonsense cartoon. And the fact that the "bean headed unexpressive noodle-armes characters" can make people feel an emotional response to some of the scenes is a testament in and of itself. It's easy to make someone laugh. It's difficult to make them weep.

And I don't know anyone who gauges their science knowledge through cartoons like Rick and Morty. I think you have it confused with Big Bang Theory.

And just because you find the plots forgettable doesn't make it fact. I remember most of the episode plots.

Rick and Morty isn't nihilist though. Morty's frustration is with Rick stems from his frustration with the moral void he represents - as Morty says to Summer, a void where nothing matters beyond the ego. What Morty's statement to Summer last season that nothing matters, come watch television in the world - is that in a meaningless world, we find meaning, and the place Morty finds meaning is through enjoying the company of his family; he finds meaning in love and life.

Rick and Morty doesn't have sci-fi references. It doesn't have any "science" in it at all, beyond stuff that function as plot mcguffins.

None of the characters have been flanderized. All the characters have been further developed since their initial inception to be more indepth then before. Just because a character is part of an archetype doesn't mean that the character isn't fleshed out.

I think what's weird is how people praise Birdperson or Rick's attempted suicide for "le feelz". Morty's fuckups are way more interesting and break up the levity better than latter aforementioned example. It's like the fan base is only capable of taking things at face value, which would explain why Rick is so popular. The smarter, aloof, sardonic guy who loves SCIENCE!!! is pretty easy for the average redditor to project upon. I'm not calling the show out on this, it's just that I can see why they'd like him. Just like Deadpool, who they only know of through memes and out of context panels.

Ugh, don't remind me. His character was great because we barely saw any of him. His inappropriately jovial attitude towards being an assassin was really funny. It would also wear out pretty fast.

I don't mind fans forming inside jokes and enjoying the show, but the amount of dick sucking they do is embarrassing. If Rick says the same line more than two times in an episode, people will quote it as if it were organic. The show forces memes in a way that Doug Walker could only dream of.
