I'm not the most avid viewer of Adventure Time, but there was an ep where Jake's imagination got out of control and affected reality. As Finn was trying to cross a bridge to rectify the situation, Jake accidentally imagined a troll that wouldn't let Finn pass without solving a riddle or something.
Finn turns to Jake, and gives him an annoyed look. Jake's response was to blush, shrug, and let out a laugh like "Bah-huh-hah-hoo."
I thought it was the funniest shit ever. The setup, and how bashful Jake was was perfect.

>>91333119
Eh, South Park only seems insightful to people who have a surface view of issues.
Their entire thing is basically trying to act detached from issues and mocking people who get to invested, or to act like both sides are equally bad (smoking episode, etc.). I should clarify this doesn't happen in every episode (some are just funny cultural references like to Lord of the Rings, or stupid adventures in town obviously) but the ones that most teenagers look to as being meaningful and a statement on current events are usually pretty superficial.
Pretty good example of it is how Trey Parker talks about the Big Bang and religion.

>>91339213
the irony is that you only have a surface view of south park. that's eaxctly what it looks like if you've barely paid attention
>>91339213
>>91339536
Sometimes their message is that there IS no depth to an issue, that it's all being puffed up over nothing. That's becoming more and more relevant every day.
But that's not their -only- message. just that you should double check everything to make sure it has more than a surface to it before getting mad.
>>91334817
Hey sweet an occasion to post this
>>91339536
Nah, I've seen every episode and enjoyed it for what it is. A pop culture referencing cartoon. I'm not saying you can't enjoy it, but anyone who goes "THEY REALLY GET IT" is basically fedora tier in their outlook. It's a funny show that hits a few points, but their style is detachment.
Also, that's not what irony is.
>>91339563
Yeah, but that's kinda a weak "insight" when that's true of everything. It's the philosophical equivalent of 'water is wet'... most things don't matter to an average person trying to make a living, and nothing matters at all cosmically.
They've clearly changed over the years though. They themselves have gotten a little preachy, which they referenced by having everyone pissed at Kyle for a while... but then didn't really change themselves.
>>91336340
Now look, would I turn on the gas if my friend Rocky was in there?
>>91338817

>>91339683
that's one of the two things called irony. from context you should get which one it is.
as for the rest of what you said, i'm not sure what's worse, your misunderstanding of the show, the post you replied to, or reality
>>91339721
i can't help but wonder if the fact that he's wearing a different jacket is a mistake on the colorist's part or an indication that he's made that exact face in the past
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTJ6GPGMozo
>"Stupid Smarch weather"
>"Good Advice!"
>>91339863
No, in neither context is that what irony is. It's either saying something using language that usually would imply the opposite, or if something turns out in a way contrary to what you'd expect. Then there is dramatic irony and all that nonsense, but who cares. So there are like four types.
None of which work for you. At worst I was being hypocritical. In reality though, I'd say you just don't have much to say. I'd love you to tell me something South Park has brought to the table that isn't detached or superficial in outlook...
but really it'd be better to post stupid cartoon moments.

>>91340260
Everyone cares about irony? Not enough then given how much it's misused.
>>91340369
no, everyone cares about dramatic irony and all that nonsense. it's the way nearly everyone uses the word, so.. at this point it has changed. i know that's gay but what can you do?
>>91340415
Dramatic irony is something entirely different, and you weren't even using it the non-literary way.
>>91340496
so you're saying not only are you a stickler over the originally correct use of irony, but you also don't use the term 'dramatic irony' to mean what even the sticklers use it to mean, that is the common usage where the result has a twisted relationship to the expectation
christ man, the stick. it's waaay up there, morty.
>>91340526
>reddit and memey reference
Dramatic irony is specifically when the audience is aware of the irony of a statement because they know something character is unaware of. You're thinking of situational irony, but that still requires the expectation and results to be different. Like trying to assassinate someone but the bullet lodges in a tumor that would have killed them, and the surgeons save his life.
Again, you probably were trying to say it was an interesting coincidence/I was being hypocritical or something.
>>91340640
you knew exactly what i meant
>>91340780
Yeah, which is why I'm telling you you meant it was an interesting coincidence, despite the fact that you said irony. Funny that.

>Pretty good example of it is how Trey Parker talks about the Big Bang and religion.
Honestly, I really like their view of religion. Both South Park and Book of Mormon have this really nice message of "science doesn't necessarily discount the existence of god, but honestly who even cares, if people can derive positive meaning from religion and use it to make the world a better place, then good on them".
It's very chill and only shits on people who feel the need to be dicks to those who think differently.

>I'd love you to tell me something South Park has brought to the table that isn't detached or superficial in outlook
>The post-9/11 episode that was all about how people living in the Middle East have to deal with terrorism every day, acting as a kind of catharsis
>That episode where Mr. Garrison tries to act like a pervert so he'll get fired and can sue the school for discrimination that ends with the message of "just because someone's part of a persecuted minority doesn't mean they can't also be an asshole"
>The smoking episode where they portray cigarettes as horrible and disgusting, but still say that people should be free to smoke if they wanna because adults can make their own decisions
I mean, it's nothing particularly groundbreaking, but the messages South Park puts forward are usually a little more thoughtful than your usual adult animated show.
>South Park's stance on religion is "it's okay if you take positive meaning away from it, even if it doesn't turn out to be true"
>Family Guy's stance on religion is "it doesn't matter if you're using it to improve your life and be a good person because it's all fairy tales for dumb idiots LOL"

“I’ll make a wish that can’t backfire. I wish for a turkey sandwich, on rye bread, with lettuce and mustard and-and I don’t want any zombie turkeys, I don’t want to turn into a turkey myself, and I don’t want any other weird surprises. You got it? . . . Hey! Hmmm, mmm, not bad, nice hot mustard, good bread, the turkey’s a little dry . . . the turkey’s a little dry! Oh foul accursed thing! That, to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever"
Trey at least is on record calling every religion stupid, but he's still spiritual but "it would take a really long time to explain what I mean by god".
That's pretty fedora tipping, just without the atheism.

But that's just proving the guy right. That's a really lazy, non-committal, dismissive, two-dimensional view of religion. What about radical Islam, or institutionalised child abuse, or all the ways that religion manifests, yadda yadda?
Everything South Park does is just a handwave and a shrug. "Meh."
"Whatever" isn't a message.
>>91364954
I wouldn't say that was all that thoughtful. Like, that's the thing. Meaningful and deep to 14 year olds who's brains have started to expand. To anyone over the age of 20, just a trite form of libertarianism.
