Let's talk about the predecessors of superheroes
What are your favorite pulp magazines ?
>>
Unfortunately I've barely read any of the classic Shadow comics, let alone any of the pulp magazines.

AFAIK it's not all that well collected or easy to find. Any recommendations?

You can start with the radio programs first. They are easier to find online. The best episodes are the ones starring Bret Morrison and Orson Welles.
Good thing about The Shadow is that you can pretty much start from anywhere (although it helps to at least read up on the character's history and importance).
The recent Matt Wagner comics are pretty good in case you can't find the older pulps.

If you want more, this guy made two videos about The Shadow with some great recommendations.

There's a complete collection of Shadow epubs somewhere, but I lost it when my last computer crashed and can't find it again. If you check out pulp threads often enough someone is bound to post it eventually. There's also reprints available if you want to buy them.
Edgar Rice Burroughs stuff is also great. Most of Tarzan and John Carter is public domain, and those two are definitely proto-superheroes.
I once read a volume of The Spider and thought it was really good too, but I don't know a good place to get them.
I think The Avenger and Doc Savage both have new volumes coming out if you want to check them out.

Cool. I really love the Superman radio show so I'll probably enjoy the Shadow one.
>>

Hah. No, but I have listened to many episodes of the radio show though. I like The Shadow and X-minus One, but found green hornet too boring and tongue on cheek.

what would be a good point to start with the Phantom? apparently this stuff is huge in europe to this day

>>91330459

the thing with the radio show is that most of the episodes you find online are in shit quality, I understand its a miracle we can still hear the recordings in the current year of our lord 2017, but sometimes you have to crank the volume up to kingdom come and you will still have trouble understanding the old time american accents
>>

Razor is pretty cringy but I like his comic recommendations
>>

his videos on Daredevil and Elric are pretty solid too, dont know much about the Metal Mythos since Im not into that but they seem pretty thorough

if I loved Howard's Conan stories would I like Kull? is he really distinct from Conan or is it true he's just proto-Conan?
>>
>>91331687
Well since Conan literally started out as an edited Kull story, some similarities are to be expected. Regardless the Kull stories are worth reading if you're a Howard/Conan fan since it takes place in the same universe and will liikely shed light on the history of Conan's world.

>>91330714
>>91330823
His Mythos videos are fine, even if soem of his opinions are questionable. Most of Razor's cringe come from his shit taste in games and political views. He's also one of those autists that thinks Geralt from The Witcher is a ripoff of Elric.

Torrents would be your best bet. The web based download site that people used to post was http://www.blogicalthoughts.com/2011/01/08/ebooks-2/ but it's 404. I went on an archive.org quest and managed to find:

https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20141026140213/http://www.blogicalthoughts.com/2011/01/08/shadow-magazine-1931/

This will get you the earliest pulps, enough to get a flavor for him but since he was published over decades and later on by different writers the style did change.

Finding the rest of the pulps are sadly a bust, which is a shame. The Shadow has an interesting connection with the origins of Batman, who was largely styled after The Shadow complete with a penchant for the villain dying at the end of the story. The very first Batman adventure was actually lifted from a Shadow pulp, but a much later one that I cannot find access to yet.
>>
>>91330497
They're fun and in some ways better than Superman since the serial nature of his program often left gaps in the adventures where no recording is known to exist, something I find incredibly frustrating.

Naturally you can find The Shadow on youtube and torrents, however here's a decent collection of The Shadow online:

http://otrrlibrary.org/OTRRLib/Library%20Files/R%20Series/Rudy%20Vallee%20-%20Valle%20Varieties/S%20Series/Shadow,%20The/

While not completely comprehensive it offers some of the relatively recently discovered Shadow stories which include:

Murder by Rescue
Fountain of Death
He Died at Twelve
The Mine Hunters
The Witch Drums of Salem
The Old People
The Black Buddha
The Voice of the Trumpet

Sadly it's still missing quite a few, such as:

Professor X
Revenge on the Shadow
The Hospital Murders
The Reincarnation of Michael
The Mark of the Bat

There was another source that provided these but it's since vanished from the web.
>>
>>91334945
Actually try this one: http://otrrlibrary.org/OTRRLib/Library%20Files/S%20Series/Shadow,%20The/

That should get the missing episodes.

There's a lot of old super hero themed old time radio programs.

The Green Hornet

The Blue Beetle (not too many episodes, sadly)

The Lone Ranger

Scarlet Pimpernel

Zorro

The Avenger

The Whisperer

And that's just leaving out the scifi pulps which often had Saturday morning programs and comics of their own.

I still have to organize my collection. Like the PDFs, these are from a decade ago. I need to make sure the titles and dates are all correct to be sure, but doing a file count, there's a discrepancy of about 20 recordings between my collection and OTR's, and I'm pretty sure I went through my folders for duplicates.

I'll see what I can do.

I won't be original and I say: Shadow, Doc Savage, The Spider, Green Hornet. There weren't really that many pulp characters, and as much as I like reading them from time to time, it's kinda obvious that there isn't many possibilities with them.

The best pulp comics were done by DC, and to some extent by Dynamite. Anything else was trash

YES

Get the Saga of Solomon Kane book Darkhorse put out. It collects all of the Kane backups from the Savage Sword of Conan books and a few others. it's as good as any of the adult Conan or pulp comics being released at the time. The writing is mostly Roy Thomas and most of the great 70's pulpy artists pop up with Chaykin probably doing the best work.

I recently read and dug Chaykin's Shadow miniseries. I think there's a lot of possibilities for the characters but removing them from their original context risks losing their specific appeal. Chaykin's run works because it looks and feels like a pulp story at its trashiest and without draconian censors breathing down his neck.
>>
>>91344574
Update: the file discrepancies turned out to be mislabeling by whoever I got the recordings from back in the day. They all ended up being duplicates of other files, but some of them are a bit different from the ones that OTR has. I'll have to look into it more later.

>>
>>91345158

It's absolutely gorgeous. Russell Mulcahey doesn't make plain-looking films, even when they don't make much sense.

It's very obviously trying to get a slice of that Batman '89 pie, but if you accept that it's a lot of fun. John Lone plays an 11/10 villain and there's some pretty good setpieces.

Rocketeer is definitely much better. It's one of the few genuinely great films starring comic characters.

The Shadow movie isn't really bad, it's an earnest attempt to capitalize on the brief pulp resurgence and the popularity of Batman 89. It's fun and it doesn't take itself too seriously and that's all fine for a superhero movie. I think the main problem is that the movie as a whole is way too clumsy, and being corny and silly has never been The Shadow's thing, it's always worked better as Batman's shtick.
I like Alec Baldwin but, although I think he was great at playing Lamont Cranston, it's just impossible to take him seriously in that costume with that fake ass prosthetic schnoz.

I did like some of it's concepts, like Margo also having psychic abilities which gives her and The Shadow a stronger connection (and gives her more of a purpose). It had gorgeous set-design and some pretty creative moments. And I really liked that they paid tribute to Orson Welles via a Lady From Shanghai reference in the finale.

It's a damn shame Orson Welles never got to make his own The Shadow movie. Just imagine what it could have been,

I unironically loved The Rocketeer movie.
>>
The Spider is available on ebook and on audio books from radioactive.com. They sell ebook and audio books of dozens of old pulps as well as every print version still available.

If you liked Dynamite's CAPES Team-Up between old pulp heroes, the original story of the Black Empire was a three part Spider novel. Outside of a paid ad for the Spider vs the Empire State book, Dynamite offered no credit to the original author of that story.

Norvell Page took over the monthly Spider pulps with issue #4. It was a cheap Shadow knock off for four issues and then Page entered the picture and turned into into the most exciting and violent pulp on the stands. It was like going from Miss Marple to Michael Bay. Imagine a Michael Bay movie. On cocaine. After drinking a gallon of Red Bull. Page did that every month. He was also a raving nut who would act out his scenes with the rest of the publishers staff, often wearing the Spider's Cape and using a yard stick as a sword, jumping from desk to desk. He managed to bottle that insanity into prose every month.

Robert E Howard is another author to track down. He wrote shockingly little Conan books. Mostly short stories and poems. In his brief thirty years on this Earth he managed to write pulp in every genre imaginable. From Western to boxing. He never stopped writing. His work is pure energy.

Sadly, he never saw how huge Conan became under Marvel Comics. Even the novels paled by comparison to those 70s Marvel sales. His is only family was a mother. When she died, he left the hospital and killed himself.

Could you apply the same reasoning to books? Why read Asimov when they just rebooted Ghost in the shell amirite, hes not relevant anymore

Well a ton of them are in public domain so if the slightest hint that they're profitable is seen we're gonna get a flood.

I personally loved The Lone Ranger and The Legend of Tarzan, but we all know how they were received. I don't really think there will be a big boom or cinematic universe, but I'm just happy with a steady stream of comics and to get the occasional under-performing movie.
I fucking hated The Green Hornet.

Asimov's works are timeless works of science fiction.
These are literally pulp fiction, the equivalent of reality TV, they are dispensable entertainment not meant to stand the test of time.

>look mom, I shitposted again!
>>
>>91349244

Asimov was published in trashy pulp magazines, just like Lovecraft, and Moorcock, even if its meant to be disposable entertainment you dont get to decide what stands the test of time or what gets a second wind.

just look at conan, pulpy as shit, faded in popularity for a while, and he recently got a videogame with full on ballsack simulation
>>
>>91349473
Clearly pulp heroes did not stand the test of time nor hold up under critical appraisal the same way those stories and writers do. Lovecraft is immensely popular whereas nobody knows who Doc Savage or the Shadow are except a tiny minority of middle aged to elderly cape fans.

I really wish they made an animated Will Eisner's The Spirit film to recover from the Frank Miller disaster.

Pulps fit the board criteria. What is even your argument ?
Even to this day there are still Shadow comics being published. Zorro, Tarzan, Conan, etc. And there's a lot of worth discussing how the pulps founded the superhero genre, or even the fun in reading them.
No one here is arguing pulps are high art but that is not an argument to render something worthless.
And who knows if there is going to be a pulp resurgence in the future ? Everyone deemed superheroes to be trashy exploitative trash for toddlers until Batman 89 came out and suddenly everyone started liking it.

What is your argument, exactly ? That because pulps are old and got overshadowed by the superhero comics that ripped them off they are not worth discussing ?
That because they were often cheap and exploitative they could not be entertaining or well-written or worth talking about ?
Do you go on /tv/ threads to tell people to stop watching B&W films ?
Are you one of those narrow-minded idiots who dismisses things on the grounds that "they are old and stupid" ?

There's dozens of different threads on /co/ right now discussing topics that are probably more akin to your mindset, and you chose to come here to complain at us because you can't enjoy the same things we do.

>>91350546
>Not to mention so many of these old stories are about white physical and moral supermen going into dangerous places and beating up dark skinned people and monsters.
Comic books haven't changed much from this premise.
But back then, none of these authors had to worry about "offending" anyone, because no one cared (people had bigger things to worry about), and since they were basically shaping the genre as they went along, they could do whatever the fuck they wanted.
And it's not like comic book heroes didn't have this either. Everyone forgets that period where Superman beat up a bunch of chinks, or Captain America vs the Japanese. That's just how things go.

>>

It's pretty hard, these characters are too removed from today's culture and haven't been around in media in a long time. The fact that removing them from the 30s makes them losing their appeal makes them harder for them to have appeal to a modern audience.
>>
>>91351193

I think the Phantom was originally going to be named The Gray Ghost, he didnt wear purlple yet given that the strip was in black and white
>>
>>91351193
Wasn't Gray Ghost a reference to Adam West's Batman ?
>>
>>91351288
That one, too. He's voiced by Adam West and part of the subtext in the episode is the meet-up between old Batman (Adam West) and new Batman (Kevin Conroy) as a form of tribute.
But the Gray Ghost's get-up is identical to The Shadow's. Even that poster references one of The Shadow's most iconic covers. And there were Batman x The Shadow crossovers that involve Batman also paying respect to the hero that inspired him.
Even the Gray Ghost's episode within the episode starts with a line that references The Shadow's catchphrase
>Those with evil hearts beware...Out of the darkness comes the Gray Ghost
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uq2FwUDngk

They really weren't subtle about this.
>>
>>91351226
Idk, people are really crazy about nostalgia nowadays. And considering how many people ask for comic book movies to stop falling into safe formulas, maybe the darker pulps could be a solution.
But yeah, most attempts to remove them from the 30s did not work out. And this is part of why the recent adaptations of The Shadow, Dick Tracy and Green Hornet failed (although to be fair The Green Hornet movie really fucking sucked).

Always liked the episodes where a race of aliens with invisibility, shields, death rays, levitation and superior brute force decided to conquer earth but first picked a random guy to test the average human in difficult situations and discern weaknesses.

And they picked the Phantom.

And after saving the jungle from arson, and himself from multiple strange accidents and sneak attacks, he managed to get disarmed by the alien, then beat him into submission, and actually try and go punch the rest of them on the ship.

The Spider stories were rather edgy. It dollops of sexual tension, along with violence and sadism that would make Frank Castle blush. In one story, the Spider made a puppet out of a corpse using his web. Norvell Page was an absolute madman. In my opinion the best story is still The Empire of Doom, it's the most internally consistent story with properly set up motives and twists.

Feel free to do so and criticize my ideas if you think they suck.

It would follow the typical structure set by the radio drama of The Shadow solving weekly crimes and defeating supervillains, incorporating aspects from all of The Shadow's incarnations (radio drama, pulps, novels, movie, etc) to create a new image for the character. Kent Allard and Lamont Cranston would have their backgrounds slowly revealed over a period of time, and there would be a bit more focus to develop The Shadow's agents such as Margo Lane or Harry Vincent, or an actor who plays him in an iconic radio program who is then chosen to become one of his agents (it would be unthinkable of me to do anything related to The Shadow and not include references to my favorite director Orson Welles), and so on.

There would also be a focus on the main character's development as he has to co-exist with multiple different identities (Kent Allard, Lamont Cranston and The Shadow) and how all three of these begin to take their respective tolls on his mind as he becomes unable to distinguish himself between his own multiple identities and deals with the consequences of his roles and his deeds (since The Shadow has always known the evil in the hearts of men better than anyone). There was a Shadow x Twilight Zone crossover that had a similar premise that I think could be developed a little bit further.

Also do they still make pulp paper?
Could a company today choose to make stories on cheap pulp paper and sell new stories at less than $1-2 and cost way below the $3-5 floppies we got now days?
>>
>>91362273
Edgy goes with the territory, and by edgy I mean a modern view. I remember one anon getting completely bent out of shape over "that fucker with the jew nose and fedora who laughs while killing people."

There are so many things wrong with that sentiment, but yeah he did laugh. That was his thing since his earliest incarnation on the radio narrating crime stories. And yeah a lot of the pulps could probably be considered edgy. The Prince of Evil stories, I suppose, one of his few recurring foes but also proof that even when The Shadow was convinced to his own satisfaction who was guilty he wouldn't just murder someone in cold blood without being able to prove that person's guilt to the law - or just catching them in their own trap.

As the series progresses, The Shadow would also stumble across other literary characters who preceded him, such as Fantomas or Judex, and from these encounters, The Shadow would be motivated to expand his own network of agents by looking for other men such as himself or even giving some of his agents the tools for greater power. The Shadow would seek out men untainted by evil to carry on the methods of justice that he did, as a way to ensure that his attempts to atone for his past misdeeds were not in vain. As such, he would be indirectly responsible for the creation of other pulp icons. It would reference and detail the creation of the pulp heroes (which would lead us to superheroes in general), all started from The Shadow. It would function as a tribute to the character's identities and legacy, above anything else.

The main goal of the series would be to update the character aesthetically, explore his personality, motives, history and etc, and above all, pay homage to the character and everything that entails his tremendous legacy, to show that he's more than capable of still being fascinating even decades after he's been overshadowed by his rip-offs.
>>
>>91362454
You could do it electronically and it would be cheaper. It's more a style and not just materials used.

I'm more surprised we don't get more attempts to revive audio dramas since recording software, sound effects, and bandwidth aren't much obstacle. Instead we have, what, The Red Panda and whatever Big Finish is churning out.

All the stories are preserved in ebook format or other media, but the biggest waste is how the interior illustrations are lost to time, that goes doubly so for the many imaginative science fiction magazines from the 1910's through the 40's. I want to find these almost more than the stories themselves.

Margo's purpose was the same reason The Doctor had companions. The clever cuss needs someone to explain everything to and prove why he's so clever. It's why most of the radio detectives had a gal friday. Hell, that's the reason Holmes had Watson. Some detectives made do with whatever gal they met during the adventure whom they typically wound up romancing, other's had colleagues or some member of the police they buddied with.

This was a lot less useful in the pulps but they made do with her. She wound up being far more skilled than the radio version, anyway. It's a shame The Shadow started relying less and less on agents as time went on.

Honestly when I started listening to the old radio shows I expected Margo to be just a worthless girlfriend/damsel in distress. I was surprised that I found myself enjoying her. She had some pretty good banter with Lamont and she was pretty clever herself, and she wasn't really a girlfriend, but more of a genuine friend.

It is interesting how The Shadow grew to be less of an asshole to his agents in the pulps. Of course in the beginning it was largely his mystique and superhuman qualities marked by a distinct lack of humanity since he typically was beyond emotion or sentiment. Batman suffers from that mentality on occasion, so I guess it comes with the territory. Later on he'd be a lot more approachable and never squandered his agents and never let them down, such as when Rutledge Mann was actually kidnapped for awhile.

I think a much better version to what he said in the movie was what he said to Lamont Cranston in the pulps when he basically says that Cranston squanders his good fortunes which under The Shadow's careful guidance have actually increased significantly. Worse for Cranston even if he tried to turn The Shadow in as an impostor The Shadow knows his own life, his documentation and his business so much better that the police would ultimately be convinced to arrest the real Cranston as the impostor!

This certainly wasn't something Cranston took with good grace, but ultimately it paid off so well for him he welcomed it. He takes almost no danger, his fortunes are increased (if a significant portion is diverted to fighting crime), and he can enjoy the lifestyle of a rich playboy traveling the world.
