Cartoon characters are designed in a similar way a logo or a mascot is, each one of them or at least per-series, Anime characters all share a common base that can be tweaked to a quite limited extent ( there is a reason why an Anime is so distinctive) so they go the MMORPG character creator route and add layers upon layers of details and accessories.

Take MLP character basic design and blow it up to a macro level for an entire medium.

Well my aim is to knock out a short little demo by tomorrow night, and link to his patreon at the end of it encouraging people to donate to him and vote for more sprites (which I think is the most viable option that won't turn his Adventure time fans against him). Maybe giving people a taste of actually playing the game will help sway them.
