I enjoyed Archer a ton up til about season 4, and still do to an extent but god it kills any humor when shows reference their own "popular" jokes.

S7 was great though. Totally captured the magic of the original seasons. Vice was shit though, and the season after it was too.

It's weird to think that there have now been more bad seasons of Archer than good ones.

So, how was it? Was it passable? I heard some screening reviews saying it had hardly any jokes at all, so I'm a bit worried.

It happened and I watched it, that's all I can say about this episode.

There's such a thing as too much "heart" in a story.

I tried binging season 7 to catch up for the premiere, but I just couldn't get any motivation to finish. That two-parter with the clown hostage situation was awful. Was it always this bad?

No. The new episodes suffer from using Archer and Lana too much, and their shit is boring. They forget that the show's major strength comes from being an ensemble, so the rest of the cast is just reduced to the occasional one-liner.

They had to establish a lot, what with all the characters being completely different people acting out a weird story in Archer's comatose mind, and it's definitely going to be a season-long plot so the episode is setting everything up. Really it was a fairly by-the-numbers Archer episode: He gets an assignment, bungles it but comes out relatively unscathed though no better off. Plenty of banter but since Archer is now a loner PI he's going to be doing monologues as much he is back and forth with other people.

Thing is, they need to get rid of Pam and Cheryl. They were just background characters who've grown into main characters that hardly anyone gives a shit about outside porn. Seeing Kreiger also growing into a main character is becoming a problem too. At least they stopped doing some of their long running jokes like the prank voice mails.
