Bit of a slowpoke on this one but I don't see anyone talking about it.

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2017/03/31/comics-alliance-close/

>Bleeding Cool learnt the sad news yesterday, but we were asked to postpone reporting on it, until those affected had been contacted. But it has been confirmed to us that the website Comics Alliance is to close.

>Set up in 2009 by AOL, the comic book news and features site run initially by Laura Hudson seemed to operate as an online sequel to the Comics Foundry magazine. The site closed once in 2013 when AOL closed a number of their sites.

Is this our fault for using Ad Blockers?

More their fault for being pretty shit.
>>
Talked about last week. Much rejoicing was had.
>>
>>91304016

they were too disjointed a site.
like they had too much "nerd related" stuff (the kamen rider and power rangers reviews), as well as casuals (5 things you didn't know videos) mixed in with their more indepth analytics (ask chris)
>>
OP you can't blame people for using adblockers when ads come riddled with malware. I know they just think about it like it's routine for any kind of published material, but with something like someone reading an ad on a podcast that's not going to make me have to buy a new ipod if it's not a trustworthy company.

Even if CA was good it is very hard to keep an audience in this digital world. ESPN had to shutdown Grantland despite them having a lot of good writers.

Shit happens.
>>

I don't mind ads if they were just static pictures along the border or other unobtrusive spots but fucking unmutable auto-play videos, pop-ups and shit like that that cause web-pages to take forever to load and get in the way of the web content I want to see are 100% getting block.
>>
>>91304016
and nothing of value was lost.

Fucking this. I can't sympathize with people being upset with me for using adblockers when ads keep getting fucking hijacked by malware shit that overtake the browser window. Unless they plug up that hole I can't support them that way.

So I go an open up a random article on the front page.

>22 Adds Blocked

Jesus christ. When you have 22 adds (pop-ups, overlays, side screens) being rammed at you it all at once it's practically unreadable.
>>

That's not even as bad as some. There are times I'll end up on a site, not even a porn site, and it's got 60 something blocked. It's absurd.
>>

>Grantland
Do Pappademas and Klosterman write on any other websites right now?
>>
I blame the Gawker fiasco for this.

But to be fair, it was a good thing that needed to happen.
>>
Gonna miss Chris Sims articles (been following since the isb days) but other than that website's been trash since Uzumeri, Khouri, Hudson, etc. left
>>
>>91304920
Probably the Ringer, that's where most of them ended up
>>

And nothing of value was lost.

Part of the problem is that, when 9 out of 10 people who visit the site use adblockers, the revenue goes down, and then they have to use more ads for the 1 out of 10 normies who doesn't know how to install an adblocker just to make ends meat.
>>
>>91304362
It's not the site's fault, but it is advertiser's fault. They've just abused customers so badly with their annoying, script-laden ads.

When you fuck customers without lube over and over and over, of course they're going to take the first opportunity to get away from you.

It's sad, because sites really have very little control over what goes in those ads. and there's no such thing as an ad company that doesn't do all that shit.
>>
The site had always been hit or miss but really went to shit after their revival. Wheeler was a complete tool. Should have stayed dead the first time.
>>
I only read TCJ as far as comic sites go these days, because its actually dedicated to comics and thoughtful analysis. CA had good stuff, but they had too much non-comics stuff, their critiques were weak, and the problem most comic critics have is ironically, they can't talk about artwork in detail, and CA was not exempt from that problem.

Good.
