Thanks for posting OP. I actually re-read the entire three part trilogy, so King's run on Batman, today and this issue works A LOT better with everything else.

It'll work much better is trade form, but it isn't amazing and doesn't add a lot to Batman as King basically spent 20 issues being like "actually Bruce has worked though his issues and acts heroically because he's a hero", which isn't saying much.

Twenty issues is too long for a palate cleanser and if this hadn't been coming out twice a month it would have been awful, but I dunno, I still kind of enjoyed it.

I'm a massive King fan, I consider him when of the greatest new voices in cape comics and he gives me hope after the departure of Morrison from the big 2. The Vision in particular I consider one of the greatest books from the big 2 in years.

Fuck me this run is underwhelming. King really doesn't seem to be bringing his style to Batman, he's just writing a standard Batman book with a few of his little flourishes. The characters just aren't as fleshed out as his other books and the plots just aren't as gripping. I'm not sure if he watered his style down for the big book or if he's just not right for it or what but this is by far his worst comic. King is bringing nothing to these characters that I haven't seen before.

The separation of the two 'died' boxes would indicate Tim's death is a distinct, different thought. The first three deaths were before Gotham and Gotham Girl. They get their own box because that was Bruce's motivation at the time. Tim's death is separate as it still happened in the past, but not before G/GG. It's a rhetorical distinction on the part of Martha to drive that point home to Bruce. It has nothing to do with the temporal placement of King's Batman run.

I think the difference between Batman and Grayson/Vision (and Omega Men to an extent) is that the latter ones were allowed to be different. Vision was pretty different from your standard cape comic. Grayson was more in-line, but still got to feel like a James Bond movie than traditional cape stuff and benefited from a defined beginning, middle, and end. Omega Men was more standard, but was able to go a bit darker than many do.

I know at the outset with Batman he talked about how he wanted to write something that plays like an action movie, so I think there was some deliberateness to why this feels so different from his other stuff. But there's still a bit less flexibility in Batman than working with B and C list heroes.

This whole sequence didn't make sense, sure from our perspective the Bat gimmick can be seen as stupid, but in universe a fuck ton of others have gimmicks. So it just feels like whining.

And 'I am suicide' is completely at odds with Bruce's prior characterisation.

That part of the episode was mostly about the cartoons, where each new one was a total reboot. Changes in his character are to be expected.

But the comics form a continous story for the most part. I'm all for writers putting their own spin on the characters, but Bruce going from being almost bull-headed about his dedication to the gimmick and it's power as a symbol to hating it with no explanation for the change doesn't work.
