It's pure autism but the way EVERY show portrays computer stuff legitimately triggers me.

Like, at least with pseudo-science babble it can kind of sort-of make sense if you don't think about it. With the computer shit it makes no sense if you have even the barest idea of how a computer or network works.

It's most unforgivable in video games, though. I know the writing is done by... well, writers, but you'd think the legions of programmers and network engineers could at least talk to the writers and tell them "this is fucking retarded and no one will buy it, can we change it a little?"

I was working on an iPhone once at work and literally blew up the battery, spewed gas everywhere and I had to book it out of the room and slam the door.

It basically vaporized everything underneath it and left a smouldering husk of a phone.

They sent me to the emergency room for the night because we had no idea what kind of gas I may have inhaled, I ended up being OK but the emergency room folks had never seen anything like it before.

Funny thing was the iPhone's screen, since it was slightly off to the side, was in perfect working condition and I got to keep it and replaced my little sister's cracked screen for free. And it was an original Apple screen, not a shoddy replacement screen, since I had only taken it off the replace the battery.
>>
>>91272425
>No idea what kind of gas I may have inhaled

It's a li-po battery, we know exactly what fucking gas you inhaled. Li-Po's blow ALL THE FUCKING TIME, they're the most dangerous battery tech we have right now and they aren't the best either, the reason everyone uses them is they're easy to make and cheap.

I mean bypassing it doesn't DO anything for you since without encryption you can't communicate on the encrypted networks but you can definitely do it.

IQ is your mental age divided by your physical age. Mental age has no clear definition, but by all definitions this means you get stupider as you get older.

It's an extremely meaningless concept. A holdover from the early days of psychology where science took a back seat to wild guesswork. That one personality test everyone loves to take is in the same boat.

I'm damn sure there was a lilo and stitch episode that turned this trope on it's head. Also Mass Effect 3 implied the Asari held everyone back in terms of tech by keeping artifacts secret, so there's that.

To be fair, this can result in death, though more often because the base element is toxic/radioactive/in group 1.

>>91280266

Well to be fair, doing anything differently is a relatively new idea. WW1 was only a hundred years ago. Anything that wasn't quite so retarded usually either became 'legendary', or ended up in the 'Art of War'.

It's only in the last century where tech has got so lethal that sheer numbers can't win battles anymore in 90 percent of cases.

Same with body swapping. Wouldn't you instantly realize that something's not right? Your gait would be off, your arms would look different, your whole body would just feel different, but characters take a minute to find out. It's especially dumb when they change sex.

Such bullshit. IQ is the most predictive tool in the modern psychological arsenal.

High IQs are consistently correlated with financial success, relationship success, high SAT scoring and long term planning. People with high IQs even fucking live longer and are generally in better help. Low IQs correlate with financial instability, low performance in education and bad decision making.

Any behavioral psychologist can tell you this. IQ is an incredibly powerful tool. People like you just resist it because it threatens your egalitarian, tabula rasa worldview.

Actually, we bred out the neanderthals in a lot of cases, tamed cats, and couldn't do shit to stuff like corvids and dolphins but sure why not.

>we just killed them with brute force

Eh. We killed them with the invention of various tools, starting with fire and going onto various metals and armors etc. In terms of hunting, we mostly just ran out faster prey with our better cardiovascular endurance.

We aren't the fastest or the strongest; rather we're the most tactile, with the best capacity for endurance. We aren't really very good at building pure strength muscles without a dedicated regime and diet. Hell, a lot of great apes right now could literally tear us limb from limb, and we'd be fucked, hence the whole Harambe shit.

>And the rest is /pol/shit.

Also, aforementioned poster above and others are literally trying to sort us out like that one 'special' kid with his skittles, so...

You and the anon you're replying to both have good points. A fair point. I think I could argue though that pattern recognition (among the other factors that IQ tests for) operate as an augmentation to other skills and talents you might possess. For example, having talent with paints is usually a prerequisite to being that sort of artist but the talent alone can only get you so far. Having the intelligence to delve into the world of history and technique as well as business and economics can be what separates a good artist from a successful artist.

Obviously this is just one specific example but you can apply this thinking to most fields.

Teacherfag here. Before I had my license I worked for a few years as a sub. The state was voting on a new budget for the education and it basically came down to

>A. Fire all the newest teachers with the least seniority and least pull with the union
>B. All teachers take a 1 year pay freeze (union normally guarantees a raise EVERY YEAR for teachers something that no other job I'm aware of benefits from).

Selfish cunts complained about this budget TO ME in the lounge one time at lunch! Like ... I'm literally the person who's job they'd be taking if it was a year later and I had my license. Years later and I still can't believe how fucking psychotic that was

Every time I heard the battle droids in clone wars say I've got a bad feeling about this I wanted to bash my head on the keyboard.
>>
>>91293298
I'd be more concerned about the fact that we'd be effectively cloning slaves at that point and how they would react to comprehending that.
Some of them might turn violent, I think a lot of them would just refuse to work, there might be a lot of existential anxiety (as much as a robot could have, anyways).
My question is why they would need that sort of processing power as slave machines. I think rather than creating artificial intelligence to serve us, we should just build simpler machines capable of following orders but not of anything approaching higher thought if we want them to serve us. They'd effectively be mechanical animals, and I think any AI given sufficient education would understand the difference between a non-sapient slave machine and a true AI.

IQ doesn't correlate with anything, outside of "if you are lower than this you have some mental disorder.
there's literally no scientifical reasons to classify non defective IQs since it means nothing. Have you taken one of those? Most of it is filling logical series, be it math, shapes, words, and some reading comprehension on a short text. There's no element there to grade intelligence as a whole. IQ does not take into account the personality of the person. You can have a high IQ and not be successful because of you have low self esteem

>>91294976
You're the dumbass. What I said was an example of how IQ is irrelevant in how successful you are. A person can be super smart but there's still other factors involved for them to be successful. >All this bickering about IQ tests

As a person with a psych degree, I can tell you guys with absolute certainty. High IQ means very little, the standardized IQ test (also known as the WISC) is a test of pattern recognition, spacial reasoning, memory and language proficiency. It does test your capabilities in these areas, however this isn't an indicator of intelligence in the classical sense, more a measure of your basic mental faculties.

It also doesn't measure knowledge (as in, what you know and have learned).

When it comes to identifying intellectual disability, this test works excellently because it can tell you if someone's basic mental faculties are lacking.

However when it comes to telling you who's 'smarter' among people who are at the average or above things fall apart, primarily because the basic mental faculties that IQ tests measure make up only an extremely small amount of what makes an individual 'smart'.

But that's what I'm talking about. Even if you know little about computers the pseudo-science doesn't make sense.

Like if you even know what an IP address is or what encryption or a firewall is, or hell, even just that most tasks are accomplished through programs and not mashing on a keyboard, you can tell it's bullshit. Like, anyone born after the 60's.

It's like if when they're talking about other pseudo-science shit they just say "the gravity is polarized by the ion which is transmitting hemoglobin through solar inertia!". It's not even on the level of expecting you not to think about it, it's just lazily spewing big words, they don't even try to come up with a bad explanation.

Japanese is a much less expressive language than English, so more literal translations are going to sound stiffer and repeat phrases more often.

While I agree with the intent of this post, please don't spread this garbage. Saying eskimos have 36 words for snow is like saying english has 50+ words for snow because we can say "piss-snow, dirty-snow, turgid-snow, soft-snow" etc.
>>
>>91312531
That's why I said "types of snow". And there are actually several different types of ice and snow in scientific circles too, dependent on crystal lattice.

I suppose a more direct way to put it would be just to say English has far more different ways to say "That sucks".

>>91308972
Seconding this. I might adopt and give an existing kid a stable home, but I'm never generating life.

But that would be wrong. The issue is the opposite, Enlgish (especially american) doesn't carry politeness so when a japanese can say something in 10 different way depending to who he talks and how he respects that person, English will just use generic crap like "your bastard" or "my love".
