the original plan was to focus Adventure Time on, you guessed it, adventures. The original plan was to have Finn slowly drift away from Bubble Gum and to Marceline as he got older but it wasn't even a focus, it was just an idea for later.

Sugar wanted to push the relationship shit immediately. She's responsible for Finn and the Fire Princess getting together and Marceline going with Bubble Gum. Once she left they ended Finn and FP but the show really never really fully recovered from it

Maybe killed isn't the right word...Sugar was the root of Bubblegum and Marceline's past friendship, and since she's a very "hands off" writer, everyone else decided to run down the street with it. Coupled with Flame Princess and the relationship cancer that plagued Season 3 and beyond, Finn drifted out of the picture entirely and Marceline being utilized as more or less an accessory of Bubblegum-centric stories.

I think that's the problem though, Sugar pushes for ideas which aren't necessarily bad but after getting the green light from the team she just takes a step back and lets the team run with her idea and it crashes and burns.

Her hands off style is just bad. She was the only one to want the relationship drama (as most evident by how quickly they dropped it when she left) but then wasn't involved when it was green lit. So you had a bunch of people creating and writing something they didn't want and really didn't think was a good idea while the person who did isn't involved.

Well no wonder it turns out bad.

Perhaps I should rephrase that: Finn is "romantic" in the sense that he tries to win over the affections of those he cares for, but it is by no means his strong suit. I feel he would be geared toward forging a long-lasting bond with someone he could interact with on a personal level, that's all. Someone within his element. It doesn't have to be exclusively romantic for there to be chemistry, and Marceline was proof of that from the get-go. But on that note - when was the last time they were allowed to do anything together that didn't involve Finn playing third wheel to PB or another party? I really cannot remember.

Huntress Wizard has been a breath of fresh air, I admit, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. As I somewhat mentioned above, Finn has been shafted so many times that the concept of "endgame" has become moot to me, realistically speaking.

I think the original plan was Bubble Gum, Pendleton isn't a complicated man when we talk about ships and he kind of tried to bring Bubble GumFinn back. Sugar however, she was a shipper of Finnceline, Sugar had drawings, romantic drawings with Finn and Marceline kissing, in fact, I heard they had sketches of that final scene at the cinema, there was a kiss but they didn't animate it. If you notice the ending of the episode is a bit random.

Sugar was the creator of P. Flame, Pendleton established it because of her so for we don't know what reason when Sugar left Pendleton destroyed that using what seemed a ridiculous endgame with Cinnamon B, at the same time Pendleton destroyed the link between BG and Betty, in that way, BGum was free to be a romatic interest for Finn.
