That, at least, is the only explaination I can come up with of why Mike lashed out at Lucy after months of her not being a tsundere pain in the ass, apart from bad writing on the author's part.
Maybe Mike also blamed Lucy for his feelings towards her. After he succeded in getting Lucy away from him, seeing her with Augustus made him realize that he still wasn't over her, and that upset him even more. These feelings might have seriously jeopardized his perfect story with Sandy, and he somehow ended up blaming Lucy for them. Maybe that's what he's referring to when he thinks that Lucy's always out to ruin his life. When he learned that Lucy texted Sandy after the December lash out, his fear was that Lucy revealed his relationship with him, not his borderline-psycho tantrum.
Notice how he talks about "trying to severe ties with her". Maybe he did feel guilty for always being around Lucy while still being Sandy's boyfriend.

Both the believable proportions and anally attention to details is something worthy of worshipping.

The physical abuse was the icing on the cake. Mike's resentment of Lucy is entirely because after all the support he's given her, he thinks he's nothing more than a security blanket to her and she doesn't truly care about him, it could be anyone. It's because she treats him shittily (not just the "abuse"), almost never shows her softer feelings towards him, and shoves him away every time he tries to get closer that he started feeling that way.

We don't exactly know when Mike told Sandy about Lucy, but it's safe to assume it was during Freshman year, before Acapulco, as Mike was still running around with Lucy, and Lucy was still being tsundere. At the time, Mike didn't think much of his relationship with Lucy and still saw her as a friend whose violent manners were just banter; he certainly didn't have any romantic feelings for her that might have made him feel guilty for harbouring them. That's why he didn't have any problem with being so open about her to Sandy.
I guess that Mike's feelings for Lucy began rearing their head either after Lucy's confession, or after his friends giving him shit, about the same time he started acting irrationally. Maybe his friends were right about seeing something between him and Lucy, and he didn't want them to be. Because that would have meant that he DID feel something for her.
