So what else does France have to offer in terms of animation and comics? I've seen Ernest and Celestine and Wakfu, and am vaguely aware of Tintin.

Here, read this:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/k6vivaarl4mm5b1/The+Initiates+%282013%29+%28Digital%29+%28phillywilly-Empire%29.cbr

It's a French comic about a wine-maker and a comic-maker who teach each other about their respective hobbies. Read it and then you (and the wine-maker) will learn all about France's comics.

It's really good and the art is absolutely gorgeous.

The man is far too busy this time of year.
>>
>>91242299
You caught me at a good time, ([email protected]) isn't my main primary personal email account but I happened to be checking it when this came in.

I'm still alive, I'm just in my last (hopefully) semester at university so I've been understandably busy. But it's not like I haven't had any time at all though, I just haven't had a motivation to continue work on the weekly Les Nombrils stuff since it's not that same nailbiting, episodic stuff everyone (including me) loves. I will still do the pages eventually, possible some random day when I get the motivation to knock off a few pages, or when the entire book comes out. I've been buying the digital versions of Spirou on izneo to get the pages and it's a bit of a pain to organize things, so that's another demotivator.

I didn't intend to let a whole month go by with no updates but once I got out of the routine it was easy to keep forgetting to catch up, what with all the other stuff I'm busy with.

So I'd say the short answer is I've temporarily lost my motivation to bother with it at the moment.

I appreciate you checking up on me, man. If anyone else is really curious you can feel free to copy/paste the contents of this email. Or just paraphrase all this text I wrote, I dunno.

It's my favorite series. I have a thing for pirates in general, so that helps, but the characters are also fleshed out very well and the dynamics in relationships and the interwoven storylines work very well.

The girl is adopted by the insecure squid guy and they both want to be respectable pirates in a place where pirates have been nearly eradicated by the government and their demon-possessed ships. It has a very European charm, humor, drama, action and mystery all together. I hope they continue it someday.

Pretty much everything he wrote has the same brand of feverish insanity, so it mostly depends what you're used to as far as comics go.

His main cooperation with Moebius was the Incal, his most hilarious work is Borgia: Blood for the Pope, his most REEE NORMIES series is Technopopes and his most capeshit series is The Metabarons (Though it isn't capeshit at all as it's about superheros successfuly breeding and dying afterwards over multiple generations).

Melusine was mistakenly blamed for all of Cancrelune's mistakes (like, 15 pages worth of them), to the point that they burnt her at the stake. She saw the smoke from the fire, then gathered some vines, made a rope and offed herself.
The melusine on the stake was a body double (a shapeshifter lawyer), but she didn't knew that.

the book ends with Melusine storming Hades to get Cancrelune back, but she decides to stay behind.

Yeah, but the original concept predates their inclusion in the series and there really isn't much that actually ties the comic to Wakfu, so if you have an aversion to Wakfu, I'd still give it a shot.

You don't see any of the typical classes in it that I remember, but there are several talking more-or-less anthropomorphic animals instead (like Black Ink himself). It takes place in an area that I don't think was ever mentioned in Wakfu before (or since). And while their appearance in the series occurs sometime in the middle of the trilogy, it doesn't have much impact on the story. There's only one or two pages showing that they went off for a while to raise money and then came back to partake in the tournament. You absolutely don't need to have watched Wakfu to follow.

Pic related is an earlier design from before Wakfu came into the picture.

In Canada, we have a network called Teletoon that runs animation all day. Back when it launched the channel was required to run content not just for kids, but for everyone. Before "everyone" became synonymous with kids and stoner comedies/Adult Swim imports, they used to program a bunch of European shows. One of the series of shorts they'd run was called Lolita, about a busty red head that blew me away as a little kid watching late one night
>Lolita, a young fine impish girl, evolves in an every day-life background. In spite of herself, her charms provoke strange or even surrealistic reactions in people and objects. Lolita is a realistic cartoon character incrusted on inside and outside life-like scenery.

Technically, yes. As said above, the protagonists appear in the series between two of the comics. If memory serves, the exposition behind the demon ships ties them to Rushu in some way. Gold pieces are called Kamas. Black Ink is a "Kralove" instead of an octopus. One or more of the islands are named after animals specific to the World of Twelve.

It's just not as immediately obvious as in other products. You would only need to change some of the text to make it not be in the World of Twelve (and remove the 1-page reference to Wakfu season 2). It's mostly humans everywhere without class stereotypes, and talking animals that aren't like the Lousy Pigs or Kanigers you might see elsewhere.

Melusine books have fuck all chronology, other than the first book which sets up the scenario, and that shitty later one which kills off Cancrelune.

Bigger problem is that they censor books, combine them to one volume (largo winch had that iirc) SOMETIMES but not always, and they have piss poor print quality.

Is there an English version of this? It looks really cool! I love alt history stories and am a huge fan of the colossus of Rhodes and to that degree the Statue of Liberty so I'm assuming this is if the south had won the civil war.

They make an AMERICAN chronology that doesn't contain nipples or penises.

In case of Clifton, they tried to give it a linear chronology and in case of Thorgal, they dropped everything that didn't belong to the straight "we wuz ancient spacemen from anicent Atlantis" and to the "We wuz searching for Aarica"-plots.

>>91314637
>so I'm assuming this is if the south had won the civil war.
Anon, it's a french book. It's clearly about what would have happened if the USA never happened as the Louisiana Purchase didn't take place. They probably got the statue in recognition of their valiant war against the Anglo slavers next door.

2nd panel "...where the war continue unabated. Refugees move in mass. Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger."

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"

4th panel "...from where you just came back and where you could visit the refugees camps. You came back with a book."
"Exactly"

5th panel "...and it's a horrible display no one can, no one should ignore because the tragedy of these children concerns everybody, you like me."

6th panel "...and you add the title on the front page, over five columns...yes...OK...and in a very bold font...OK"

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"

8th panel "...take out a subscription. Two Francs. The price of a pack of cigarettes: the price of a bowl of broccoli... which may save the life of a children... The life of a small Biaffrogalistanese... Send your donation to the CCP"

9th panel "One bowl of broccoli = one saved life" [TN: broccoli are a running gag in Gotlib's comics]

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"

11th panel "...which result exceeded our expectations. 537.000.000 old Francs collected to this day. Therefore, thanks to you..."

12th panel "...Yeah...Over three col. Bold font, title "The CGT [union] announce a strike" that's right. Over two col. "The UN send observers to Biaffrogalistan"... OK?"
"And send me a coffe"

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"
>>
>>91332384
Next page, 1st panel "What's the difference between a Biaffrogalistanese kid and an escaping prisoner?

2nd panel "There's no difference, [untranslatable pun]"
"And now, give me two masculine rhyme"
"I don't find it tasteful"
"Eh it's dark humor"

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"

4th panel "the 8, the ace and the 4. Gain F345.25 ordered and F128.15 not ordered. Trifecta well payed[?]. A few news from abroad, in Biaffrogalistan..."

5th panel "That's right pal, page 6, in 'foreign news'... yeah?...Yeah, sure!.. "There's no difference, [same untranslatable pun]"... you're late, pal!.."
"Hey, got some fire?"

6th panel "Say, this night, I dreamed about you.."
"That's true?"
"I was hugging you... and it was hurting me... and when I opened my arms, it wasn't you anymore, but a Biaffrogalistanese kid..."

7th panel "Ah, very funny! You find it funny to mock me!!"
"First, I'm not skinny, I'm lean"

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"

9th panel "Hey, did you notice? We're dancing like Biaffrogalistanese kids!.."
"...In front of the buffet!.."

10th panel "Well no, pal... no more room in the sixth page... you should have done that earlier... wait... yes... I may be able to put it in minor news..."
"OK pal"

"Every day, hundreds of children die of hunger"

11th panel "It's a Biaffrogalistanese kid which is painting his ceiling, and then..." [another running gag: the original joke is 'A crazy person is painting his ceiling, another crazy person comes and tell him "hold on to the brush, I'm borrowing the stepladder" ']

12th panel "Haha! did you read the this week's RAB [Rubrique-à-Brac, the name of this comic] on the Biaffro-thingumabob kids!?!"
"Super fun!"
"And the ladybug!"

13th panel "..so you just returned from Peru, with this account on the tragic events we're all aware of..."
"And which concern us all, exactly."

I remember that. They had an entire variation of a theme on that, as a lesson on how to tell jokes (one guy forgot the punchline, one guy laughs at his own jokes, one guy ends up confusing himself, and one guy tells the saucy version which they are not allowed to print.

D&D

No seriously, if Gygax had gotten his act together and managed TSR well, that Frenchman would of gotten to turn his setting into an official AD&D book.
>>
>>91338952
D&D fucked up though. There was a printing house in Germany that wanted to do Dungeons & Dragons and TSR said "get stuffed, Krauts". So they did their own D&D called "Das Schwarze Auge" (The Dark Eye) and that ended up being the base game in Europe. It was translated back to America as "Realms of Arkania" but meh.

"Lune Noire" can also mean "Dark Moon". Maybe this was based on Das Schwartze Auge ?
>>
>>91339853
TSR had a lot of problems, between being run by an accountant with delusions of grandeur or by criminals, nothing seems to have gone right after 1978.
>>
>>91339853
