It's one of those cases where it totally makes sense from both the story and in-universe perspective for him not to be around much. It just also means there's not much to get hype about compared to so many others.

Actually it's a testament to the strength of this season that multiple characters got so much development and more interesting roles this time around, especially in the case of Ludo and Glossaryck who were pretty widely hated at first.

A lot of people in the first season. Mostly before Toffee showed up and it was still unclear if there would ever be a larger threat. Season 1 was just establishing the setting and mostly episodic adventures for the first half. The second half is where it grows a plot and we get episodes like Sleep Spells and Blood Moon Ball to explore Star and Marco's friendship, Mewnipendence Day to delve deeper into the setting and background, and the whole Toffee arc to give the show a greater scope plot.
Season 2 seems like it's been more of a development season, but it's a lot more consistently good than the first. There's a lot of excellent character growth and development, we get a lot more information about the world and what's going on behind the scenes, and everything has made natural progression to taking itself more seriously without losing the show's heart.

Season 3 could be almost anything, predictions range from taking the best of both worlds from the first seasons to the show going full interdimensional "Game of Thrones."

If you're looking for a recommendation, yes it's good and you should watch it.

I would imagine it'll either be early on into season 3 or will last till the end part of the season. That being said, there's too many variables yet unknown, which makes commenting on what will happen with any degree of likelihood very difficult. It's hard to even think of the strcuture the show will take, given the rather important ending to season 2. The main formula of the first two seasons could change dramatically and focus much more on Mewnie locations. In that instance, depending on if some of the secondary cast from Earth comes along, Jarco could end rather abruptly as there's an obvious distance with Marco off-world looking for Star.

I like watching this show for the animation. It's so fluid and bouncy.

Ludo/Star parallels were kind of already happening back in Season 1 but this one made it really obvious with Ludo being from a royal family too, having something to prove, etc.

Also both of them get something that season that they thought they really wanted, only to have it ultimately make things worse for them than before.

I fully expect the first episode of Season 3 to just be Marco trying to return to his ordinary Earth life without Star and feeling absolutely lonely and miserable. Eventually he just goes in what used to be her room and either finds her diary that somehow got left behind and/or Jackie tells him "we need to talk."
They might not explicitly break up before he goes after Star, but it won't last long after.

Toffee was everywhere in S2. You just couldn't see him.

He rescued Ludo from the Abyss and dropped him on Mewni.

He patiently guided Ludo to his new form, ie, the wand.

He carefully thwarted Ludo's every effort to use his new cosmic power effectively.

He pointed Ludo at Star as the source of knowledge, since his wand didn't work right.

Ludo, amazingly, figured out the book on his own.

He helped Ludo defeat Star and actually grab the book.

Once he had the book, he drained it of power to take over Ludo's body.

He then drained Queen Moon to get the power to take out the Magic High Council.

In doing so he freed ALL of Rhombulus's prisoners, among them Cosmic Bat and Queen Fucking Eclipsa.

Behind all THAT he's been draining magic for weeks, at least.

S2 was COMPLETELY about Toffee.

You just didn't see it until he revealed himself at the very end.

One thing to note is that in each of these major episodes, Star's suffering is paired with a lesson learned related to said suffering.

With St. Olga's, this is one of the few times where Star is genuinely afraid of what's going on, when things go poorly she almost loses hope. What supported her in that episode initially and what brought her hope and drive back was her friends and their positive influence on her. That's what she took away from that scenario, which is incredibly important moving forward, particularly for season 3 as she's cut off from her main ally in the form of Marco.

Bon Bon was a major case of Star learning that her past and current choices/actions have direct ramifications. First in the generation of negative feelings due to her decision to go with Janna over Marco, which is not to say it was a wrong or bad decision, just that it had consequences. Second in her treatment of Ludo and third, her general approach to her rather important duty and training which was her reason for being on Earth in the first place. She bore the brunt of her decisions in those areas all at once in that episode, which is harsh but hey, that's life.

Face the music had a similar, reinforcing message, the main difference being that her choices had unintended negative ramifications as Ruberiot took what she displayed to him and modified it. Had she been more direct in her decisions she may have avoided her suffering.

Finally, in Starcrushed Star tries to avoid handling the Marco situation, seemingly about to suffer the same negative fate as before, but fate intervenes and she realizes she has to confront this situation head on and does so in a manner that is very Star-esque. Ideally this should show that Star is on the path to learning that her choices are incredibly important and have consequences that she has to own up to and embrace, particularly without Marco around to act as her safety blanket in that regard.
