I'm back and i honest need to stop changing my ideas over and over again. So instead of change my comic I'm just gonna add whatever I can to this new one.
No more redoing, every character I've made so far for a comic will be implemented into this one as background or mains.

Even the little goblin fella, now with a bit more leniency with the design. since this one i gonna be more toon like with the character art.
>>
Hey, /HWWC/, I've got a question. I was thinking of making a comic about high stakes video game competitions. Would it be gimmicky/corny if I had the videogames drawn in sprites while the "real" stuff was drawn regularly?

Been working on a new method for backgrounds and environments using colored outlines and textures with a photobash base for reference. Here's one I'm working on. Obviously a lot of it is still in photobash portion but the segments that are done such as the floor, monitors, stools, trashcan, sign, desk, etc I think are looking pretty good.

>>91223858
I'm surprised this is the first time I've ever seen a character with paw prints on the bottoms of their shoes. Neat. As for a critique I think if you're trying to emulate fleischer era cartoons you may want to try and get rid of as many unnecessary lines as possible (stripes on the belt and soles, fly on pants, etc) and exaggerate their line of motion a little more.

>>91224283
I don't see how there'd be anything wrong with that. As long as they aren't really shitty ones I think it would be fine. You may want to set yourself on a specific console as reference and put some research into what kind of color/complexity restrictions they had for authenticity.
>>
>>91224591
I suppose i can get rid of the unnecessary stripes, This design is almost exactly like i did when i drew him on the sketchbook.

I love the design for the arcade and the color design stays true to the theme of the comic.

I like the touch with the vending machines in back, you could have a guy basically be the bar tender while people just pay him for the stuff in the machines.

Thanks! And you're right actually. The machines behind the counter are going to be broken, they're basically just make shift refrigerators and storage containers that dispense things if you hit them hard enough (which is the bar tenders job). I'm thinking half of them wont even have food items just random tech accessories and tools.

Merva here is the owner. This is a super old drawing though, I really need to make a final model of her.

What do guys think of this idea for a comic?

Its set 200 years after a worldwide nuclear war. Prior to the bomb strike most people were able to survive in connected underground shelters, while very few people survived on the surface. As i said 200 years pass with the humans underground staying as humans while the humans above ground are mutants who adapt to the radioactive environment so much that they feed off radiation and would die if exposed to clean air.

30 years ago the humans have come out of their shelters with a device that could purify the air, which could mean death for the mutants. With that humans outnumber mutants 15 to 1. A war is about start

So how do I start a comic?
I don't mean the process but how do I introduce the reader into my story without it being awkward?`
Do I use an establishing shot and show the names for everyone or do I just start in the middle of the action and let the characters drop each others names naturally?
>>
>>91231003
didnt you ask this two threads ago?
>>
>>91231003
well in any case, it depends. I think people tolerate a simple establishing-shot-and-name intro for something fast-paced and energetic like a superhero comic.. on the other hand if it's a mundane slice of life thing with a lot of verisimilitude, it's best to introduce them naturally.. which is tough because .. I mean I dunno about some people, but I never use names, and neither do my friends.

Well I decided to make a webcomic myself and I want it to be about a girl and her lizard thing who go on wacky adventures through magical lands and space.
I know these designs are pretty generic but I had fun coming up with something.
>>
>>91233439
i fucking love it. great concept. are there magical lands IN space as well?
they're the opposite of generic. I was thinking they're kind of a strange mix of highly detailed and weirdly simplified and proportioned. I love each individual aspect of them, but the whole is... unbalanced?
I'd workshop them a little more, you're clearly a fantastic artist so I bet you aren't worried this is the only good thing you can produce the excuse I give whenever people want me to try a few alternate versions of things, because it's true.
>>
>>91233513
Well, first of all thanks for the kind words and yeah when I say magical lands and space I'm kinda thinking Dragonball, Super Mario Galaxy and Space Dandy if that makes any kind of sense.
As for the designs I agree that they seem somewhat off and I'm not sure about the style in which I want to draw either.
I'm new to this wole webcomic thing so I already feel like fucking up.

that makes EVERY kind of sense. I also had Kirby on the brain, and maybe Magical Adventures in Space (god i miss that comic)
My thinking is... the dinosaur is roughly right, but it's so odd he doesn't have even stub arms, considering he's so anatomical. and maybe he can have some pupils..
whereas Yana-chan just needs a slightly (slightly!) smaller head, a neck, and some scaled-up legs, and she'll be about perfect. here i'll show you what I was thinking
>>
/co/ please knock some fucking sense into me.

I'm halfway through my graduate degree in a non-art field but all I can think about is getting it over with so I can work on my webcomic. I've been refining the story for years and it's finally becoming what I want it to be, it's on my mind constantly and I just want to make it come to life. But it's gotten to the point that I can't focus on my actual fucking thesis and my grades are starting to suffer.

Tell me it's not worth it /co/. Tell me no one will read it and I'll be an unknown mediocre artist forever. The logical part of my mind knows I can take a break before PhD to work on it but the delusional attention-seeking part just wants to drop out right now and start drafting.

Also, general advice on how to balance work and passion projects, I guess.
>>
>>91234261
it's worth it, you just need to learn how to balance your hobby better. The part that needs to be suffering is your social life, not your grades. What are you doing after you've gotten all your homework and studying done? If the answer isn't drawing, then you don't deserve to pick up the pen. if you're getting a doctorate, you've already given up on any chance of being happy in life outside of your job or people who surround you because of your prestige. And that's good, I wish I'd done it.
>>
>>91234261
You know everything we are going to say already. You can't make a living on your webcomic. You have to really build a fanbase for years before you are able to do that.

Then again, how much do you really need this degree of yours? It's unrelated to comic work, but if you are only piling debt on a worthless degree, it really is better to leave and start working with anything else (that makes you money, of course, not your comic). Work on your comic on your free time, try to gain popularity with your artwork and only then start working on comic pages, see how many of your fans are interested.

Post art, btw.
>>
>>91234741
as I understand it, the degree he has NOW is worthless, it's only the phd that's gonna make the previous degree worthwhile, as a stepping-stone.

I like the armless pupil-less dinosaur. I think omitting pupils from animal characters instantly makes them cuter.

>>91234261
why would you come to a community of webcomic creators to tell you that making a webcomic is a bad idea?

Also uhhh, update on this. Now I just need to do the posters, blue arcade machines and things for the monitors and then I'll start doing foreground stuff.
>>
>>91234261
Start your comic now and keep studying for your degree. Chances are, your comic won't make enough money to support you, but it will probably provide you plenty satisfaction by just doing it.
Set aside an hour or so every night to just work on your comic, and only work for that time, and dedicate another couple hours just to studying and work.
Just out of curiosity, what are you getting a degree in?

I'm doing the same thing, only I'm just cutting out some social stuff and VIDEO GAMES in favor of my eventual project.

I didn't even pick an art field, I just chose Language and CS. Highly unrelated to drawing or writing.

My opinion is that you really don't need a degree in something if you can display proficiency in the subject anyway. Just finish your degree (if you feel it will actually benefit you) and do the comic when you have spare time. If you have significant spare time and don't use it for your project, I'm not sure what to say.

Also, continuing from yesterday before the /cock/ happened.
>>
>>91223858
God i know what you mean by switching ideas, it seems like i come up with the basis for a new story everyday and non of them really stick out to me as better than the others so i can never decide. On the flip side, ive finally nailed down a general idea for the setting i want to base my comics in, i just need to work on fleshing out the details. Or i could just scrap it and start all over, its yet to be seen which one ill pick.
>>
>>91235166
>My opinion is that you really don't need a degree in something if you can display proficiency in the subject
this is rapidly becoming true. sadly when I went to college the 'people only respect a degree' mentality was still in full effect. at least I went in knowing full well I was just buying a job ticket, and I got a job. the part I didn't realize is that that job would destroy my life and I'm straight-up incapable of working fulltime. should have just sponged off my parents a bit while I worked on my career, but I was so obsessed with making sure I had cable and internet paid for.

Feel like sharing a WIP here because yay dialogue and personality. So weird how much mileage I got out of this friend-insert character compared to most of the others. he's just male Ryouko, but I think that just made me work harder to establish him as a big deal and a serious threat, even as other villains were utter jokes, and then those tried to work for him. I just keep coming back to him time after time. also never once changed or updated his appearance.

The author of Paranatural disabled comments on his site because he was using Disqus and people were exploiting a bug to comment on pages that didn't exist yet.

In my experience Wordpress comments are way faster than Disqus but they are also harder to moderate, at least once you start getting a ton of comments. With Disqus you can do things like banning people from commenting on your site which isn't possible in Wordpress comments.

You know what's surprisingly a rather large pain in the ass?

Character relationships.

You'd think that once you're done defining each of your individual protagonists, the way they bounce off each other would come naturally, but no, not really. Say you have five protags, as I do. Now you have to think about how each one specifically interact with each of their comrades. Even without the numbers, the various ins and outs of how two different people interact is full of complex intricacies that require a writer to pull from every aspect of the characters, to their surface traits, to hidden aspects, to philosophical beliefs... And these people are all childhood friends who are so tight that it sort of starts to become a source of conflict.

I know this is sounding like "writing is haaaaaard!", but damn. Every time I try to flesh this aspect out, I hit a road block.
>>
>>91253724
I hear you, man. I can do 'bounce off of' pretty well, but getting more complicated is hard. Sometimes you have to rig up contrived situations to get them alone together..
and on top of that you have to keep track of who knows what about whom, because that changes everything.. and neither extreme is easy to write. strangers can't relate enough, and close friends have no reason to express things the other knows full well
>>
>>91253724

Make a character web? Or shorten up each character's relationships with bullet points; maybe just focus on a few aspects that stand out instead of trying to create a massive amount of subtext that 99% of the readers won't get anyway.

but what if the lion's share of your characters are just normal people like you'd meet every day, who just.. when they're together in any situation, just kind of be quiet and try not to rock the boat?
>>
>>91259298
Conflict doesn't necessarily mean over-the-top dramatics. A group of normal friends is full of conflict. Who likes who? Who's known each other longer? Who hangs out with each other more? There's always friction, even if it's fairly subtle. That's where I start.

Working on a character for an upcoming story, trying out some colors! Any suggestions? Any stand out?
>>
>>91259122
I use the same method, I develop the characters's personal lives first and then figure out their exact role in the plot.

>>91259298
Then you might need to diversify your cast some more. If all of your character's reactions to being in a social situation is to keep to themselves and not cause conflict they're probably a bit too similar.
Do you have characters who are friendly and go out of their way to introduce themselves to people? Do you have characters who are contrarian and grumpily disagree with whatever idea the rest of the group came up with? Do you have characters who like to ramble on about the Youtube videos they watched last night?
All of these sentences could describe people I know irl. Your characters don't have to be wacky and zany to be differentiated.
>>
>>91253724

My problem is the opposite, usually how characters interact is easy for me. Defining my characters as individuals though, yeah not so much. I can write a base personality, but I find it hard to express the character unless they're interacting with others. So I use character interaction to define my cast as individuals.
>>
>>91259419
times like that I have to try NOT to just write who i know.
>>
>>91259443

I honestly like all of them, but bottom left and top left look the same.

damn you people with your 'which color should I pick'
how do I decide? they all rock!
.. somewhat. I don't think the dark purple spines on greenguy or redguy work very well. and blue guy should have the yellow tummy if he's gonna have the yellow tail tuft, for sure.
top right guy is my least favorite maybe. he's kinda... discharge-brown with pine spines? that's not the best color. But given what I know about Urchin, maybe that's the PERFECT color. What's he gonna be doin'?

Top left and bottom left have different colored bellies. I like it too! Bottom left and bottom right stand out the most to me, but a friend pointed out bottom left is exactly the same colors as Feraligatr fro Pokemon, so.

>>91260234
I'm brainstorming for Petunia's kingdom. She's gonna be a sort of pixie pop star princess, so he holds her kingdom up in the air to keep the riff raff out. Basically a giant monster bouncer/bodyguard.
>>
>>91259443
i like bottom left most
>>
>>91260433
ah, popstar bodyuard for a diva pixie..
definitely the red one. but I still suggest changing the spines to magenta or pine or yellow
second choice: green guy
>>
>>91260433
Bottom left is a pretty good color scheme, I don't think anyone will mind that it has the same colors as Feraligatr since red/pale yellow/blue is a pretty common color scheme. Sonic the Hedgehog uses it too.
>>
>>91260550
Yeah nobody would make a waninoko connection. totally different shade of blue for one thing. as is sonic.. who has cream-colored bits, not yellow.
>>
I'm in the process of making a comic but I can't really go into much details without spoiling much of the plot.

My main question/problem I have is that whenever I make something whether it be a character's design or relationship it always seems to be taken by someone else.

For example (and I do have to generalize it); one of my characters is a hybrid of immortal (kinda common in the story) shapeshifting race and a human. Her mother is hella powerful and is considered a weapon by practically everyone in this society and is hated and considered a monster by the government. (This race protects and lives in a symbiotic relationship with humans right down to being part of human family units and the two races have done this for billions of years). Her dad, a mercenary, is loudmouthed and proud human with a heart of gold but is kinda clueless.

Yeah…you can guess what this sounds like to my eternal torment. (I didn't watch the show before and during the time I made this)

I don't know. It just always bothers me that no matter what I do it just seems that, in regards to story, someone's gotten there first.

Yeah I know it's rich asking for help with coincidences and creativity on /co/ but does anyone have any suggestions that aren't 'don't whine faggot'?
>>

This is the last picture for this scene. I didn't want to complicate the background. I think it looks nicer to end it like this.

Next panel sets will have Bandara and more scenery.
>>
>>91261404
she's damn adorable.
>>
>>91261410
it's awesome, but you've gone a little too heavy on the panel lines and too light on the greebles. Think about the construction of that big notched fin at the top, can you really imagine someone building that deliberate, specific shape out of all of those haphazard pieces? or that main bowl for that matter. it's such a nice smooth regular shape, making sure all those different-sized pieces all fit together into that regular shape would be an engineering nightmare.
try to imagine what different parts put together might look like, the ways it might interrupt the shape. If there's a regular part, think about how it would be created, and out of what shapes the manufacturer would make.

that's an okay title. considering there was a show called virtual reality troopers, it could do with some workshoppan
>>
>>91262150
Your right i could get rid of the dorsal fin, the ship was designed to have a similar shape to manta rays.
but i was thinking of have an engine up there that could potentially allow the ship to maneuver like a (Portly) manta ray.
The ships not meant to fight it's basically a giant cargo tanker for A.R.T.

But i may try a different design because i wanna make this ship memorable in the story like the Enterprise.

I may have an idea for a few design, but this is the initial idea.

>again coming from an artist that has never touched vehicles and machinery.
>>
>>91262434
by no means, the fin is awesome. but it shouldn't have such a smooth silhouette and then be covered with lines, yknow?
it's okay, i've done millions of robots but very few spaceships. i think the basic shape you picked is not only cool, but pretty unique. Just... pick up some model robots and look at how their parts look.. and then some ships from cool giant robot anime, and some from star wars, and maaybe star trek but not much because their ships never looked very good
>>
>>91262728
Guess I will, might as well since I'm probably doing a genre I find very hard to draw.
>>
>>91262841
and also try to do, with art, what model builders did with real models... kitbashing. draw some cool bits and glue them on.

If you're going to have business cards, then make them proper ones with your full contact details on, and save them for networking contacts, like fellow cartoonists, editors, etc.

As >>91269489 says, while people at conventions will happily take your card, the vast majority will just be thrown away afterwards, so cheaper to produce flyers with your website on would be a better bet. I remember a fellow cartoonist saying he handed out his business cards at his table during one show. When he took a break and went to the toilet, he saw some of his cards just lying on the floor.

>>
>>91284003
if you got out exactly what you put in, almost nothing would exist.. because it would all just even out, and then not bother. you've gotta try to swing the pendulum, so your side gets a good solid swing and so does the other guy. then you sleep while it's swinging the other way.
we're all in this because we smelled profit. the sweet delicious profit of having more fun than the effort you put in, because we have a certain aptitude
>>
>>91284131
Ah, nah. That's why I'm finishing the first draft. I want it completely done before revising it. If I stopped and revised every portion I didn't like before moving forward into the story, I would never finish.

Plus, I'm not the artist. I don't have to worry about burning myself out in writing, I can put all of it into the writing and work together with someone else. It helps.

huh, the way she addresses the wound is interesting, but starting that dialogue with "stop being a baby" is confusing. is the wound fussing at her? anyone reading it would assume the wee fox is fussing at her, though it clearly lacks the energy to do so. I had a doctor refer to an infection as "angry" once, but I'm not seeing how this hole is being a baby.. if anything it's, perhaps, "being a prima donna" by bleeding more than it ought, because of the bad influence of the arrow. just my two cents.

This is setting up for some ~*worldbuilding*~ down the line, but the basic gist is that all magic is persuasion, so Liri's healing the arrow wound by shaming the fox's body into not being all bleedy and stuff.

Similarly, you create magical weapons by taking normal weapons and giving them a big ego. That kind of thing.

So whats a good way to motivate yourself to do more work on comics, writing and character design? I have so many ideas but I lose interest in them quickly cause they are kind of generic I guess. I was working with some other people on stories. But after a while I felt I was adding in stuff to make them happy and I didn't like what I was writing anymore and want to do my own thing now. I heard its easier if you love drawing and art, and while I do like drawing a lot and its fun designing characters and writing for them. I can't really say for sure I love doing this.

Any thoughts on comics that update multiple pages once a week? I'm thinking of trying this with my comic. I feel like it makes for more satisfying updates and makes it easier to write scenes with page turn reveals, spreads where not much plot happens and other things that don't really work as well in a page a day?

Only example I can think of doing this well is TJ and Amal so if anyone has better examples or sees problems with this I don't 'd like some more opinions.

I'm not sure how picky /co/ is about things being animu. We like original teen titans, voltron, samurai jack and avatar just fine relatively speaking.

I'd personally just suggest avoiding overdoing anime story tropes and avoiding chibi faces. Basically do something interesting and don't just be an autistic middle schooler
>>
>>91294165
Embrace the animu, my man, it feels better that way. Maybe avoid the big anime cliches, like speeches during fight sequences and sweatdrops and so forth, things that non-anime fans usually dislike about anime.

Just wondering, what does your art style look like right now?
>>
>>91299362
BACK does this and its made by kc green and the guy who does nedroid, two pages every wednesday. works alright as far as im concerned.
>>
>>91299362
If you want to do that it's fine, but be aware that it is historically bad for pageviews/readership. It's typically better, if you want to increase viewership, to simply update multiple times with just one page and pace your divisions (chapters, issues, whatever) according to your output instead of your story beats. As long as you aren't languishing on angst for 20 pages, readers don't mind that they have to wait a few days for the suspense to return or the action to Peter off. If anything it encourages community and discussion.

I'm kind of breaking the 180 rule here and I'm wondering if I should go through all the trouble of fixing it while maintaining page to page flow. The easiest way to follow the 180 rule in this page would be to just flip the first panel, but I've had Ramparts walking to the right for the last few pages and I don't want to make that abrupt switch in movement. The alternative solution is to flip panels 2-6 on the page, but then Ramparts and the new character wouldn't be facing each other on panels 3/4 and 5/6. So yeah, does anyone know a solution to this predicament or should I just forget about the 180 rule for once? :/
>>
>>91302600
Are they supposed to be castaways/apocalypse survivors/something to that nature? Their ragged clothes give me that impression.
At first I was going to say you could vary their outfits more, but after a second look they seem to be wearing the same kind of uniform? Still, I think you could differentiate the damage on the clothing a bit more.
I like the contrast between the two character's expressions/body language. The dude is kind of cute but I'm not sure what's going on with his hair.
>>
>>91303156
That looks fine to me actually; at most the camera moves 90 degrees between panel 1 and 2, and we can clearly see where the characters are standing in relation to each other. Tier 2 still has the characters in the same relative positions as panel 2, so it isn't really that jarring. To me, it's as if the camera pans 180 degrees across the first four panels, rather than making a sudden flip between panels.
If it still bothers you, maybe have panel 1 slightly more front on?
>>
>>91303156
don't be afraid of bending things like the 180 rule a bit if it's necessary. The most important thing, and the reason the 180 rule exists in the first place, is to ensure that the viewer isn't confused about the place of characters in a space. Also since it's really only the first panel that breaks the rules it works as a sort of transition. As long as the rest of the panels follow the rule like they do you should be good.

His hair Is supposed to be in a knot like this or if not that then think of sokkas/haus hairstyle

The girls outfit is supposed to be a leather jacket while the guys is a hoodie, they are apocalypse survivors

I should make their outfits better suited for winter since their in the great lake area

if it's supposed to be a topknot, then the issue is that his knot is not.. it's spread out over his entire head, in a way a knot would not be. Sometimes it helps to draw the bald cranium first, then add the hair. makes sure you aren't drawing it too low accidentally or leaving out forehead space.
>winter
yeah unless the 'pocalypse killed all the animals and ruined their pelts, these guys should have animal pelts on.. even just tied to their limbs, if they're unable to stitch together coats
>>
>>91303156
You set up the physical relationship of the characters in panel 2, which is fine, but my concern is where whats-her-name is looking in panels 3 and 5.

In panel 2, she naturally turns to her left to look at the characters in the doorway, but in panels 3 and 5, she seems to be glancing towards the camera which is on her right.

My impression is that the two newcomers are still standing by the door during this conversation, which means she isn't looking at them while they're talking.

What are your intentions for this scene?
Would it be better if she turned to face them, or if you showed them walking up to her desk?
>>
So I'm starting a webcomic.
I've been having crazy anxiety about sleeping for about 5 years now because I'm god damn terrified of sleep paralysis. I wish I could just beat the shit out of my fears.
Thus, my idea for this webcomic starts to grow.
Heres the basics:

The greatest priest in California, Aargus Renson, has passed away, leaving his son, Atlas, to take on the duty of "best priest". Atlas believed his fathers view on the world was just, and that he had a mindset of justice, though he didn't agree with his practices.
Atlas plans to literally live like the romans, and box the demons, spirits, ghosts, ghouls, goblins and other evil entities out of existence like the roman priests did hundreds of years ago.
Atlas, now known as the towns "Ghost Boxer" accompanied by his occultist friend Rachel "Dollie" Rojas, and others (brain storming other characters now) enter the supernatural ring in over the top, paranormal boxing matches, with Atlas' main goal to box "El Jefe De Los Muertos", or commonly known as "Death", to rid the world of the idea of evil itself.

So, basically supernatural boxing ghost hunter, with a splash of comedy.

Going to start character rough drafts soon.

Input or questions greatly appreciated!
>>
>>91303463
>>91303486
Thanks for the advice, I really wasn't sure if the transition would be too jarring for readers or not.

>>91303941
Yeah, I only caught that after I posted it. She's supposed to be facing them from her desk while the two are standing by the entrance, I tried just changing her eye's direction to mitigate the issue.
>>
>>91303998
Sounds cool, I like the concept of just beating up supernatural forces with one's fists. My one question is that I thought priests were celibate, is Atlas adopted or was her born before he dad became a priest or something? Or is the father not a Christian priest?
>>
>>91304187

>>91303998

I dig the catholic mysticism aspect, that stuff is really neat. I'd research some of the jewish stuff too just to provide some context. what they built on, what they made up entirely.
just own the sleep paralysis, man. it's hard, but you can just be like "oh well this is what's going on. it's not real, i'll just enjoy getting some more sleep. need it anyway" also maybe try medications, melatonin might make you sleep right through it
>>
>>91304047
keeping people looking in the right direction is so hard. I notice perspective issues all the time that are revealed by the fact that a person has to look up or down to see someone who's in the foreground or background, with their eyes actually moving on their face, to look right.. but in real life they aren't actually vertically different..

I wasn't going to say anything, but the colored outlines are weird because they A) match in column when the story isn't going by column (is it?), and B) have more range of color than the entire rest of the comic, by far.

I would say give them some kind of rigid structure at some point, because space is a 'cuum and all that. Not necessarily an exoskeleton, but at least evidence of an endoskeleton, and not being all-squish (squishy bodies by contrast are good for high-pressure, hence deep-sea stuff)
the skin should also be white or metallic, because space is hella full of radiation
as far as the ones here, I like them, especially the crystal one, the shuttlecock, the crystal-eyed yellow submarine, and mr grin. the fins-and-tentacles one on the bottom right would be pretty perfect but I feel like the tentacles would retract during space flight and only protrude for landing or in an atmosphere. Helmet-guy on the top left is also cool but looks like it's kinda missing something.
I also like the idea of a ship that can only fly so far before it has to sort of 'surface' on a planet for air.

How many characters is too many characters? More specifically too many for a single crew of MCs. Where is the sweet spot? I don't mean background characters but let's say I had a single group with a mission how many is too many to handle

here's how I see it:
one person's alone. introspective. audience surrogate
two is a pair of buddies but they'll get sick of each other unless they realllly work together. because they have nobody to buffer against
three is a good group in theory, but the problem is two will outvote one all the time. You can do three alright with frequent guests. it's also the best to draw, but unfortunately..
four is definitely the sweet spot. you have the perfect distribution, votes are unlikely to be 3 on 1, they can arrange themselves in good ways, they can let's-split-up-gang either in 2s or 1s. they can fit together in a car or on two horses.
five works just about as well, but you're getting to the point where your team is conspicuously a TEAM and not 'just some people' or a 'crew'. at this point you have to start thinking about strategy and it's also getting really hard to draw them all in one place
six or more is just a crowd. I wish I was able to keep my crew numbers smaller, because it's just ridiculous at that point.. I miss having four. nine sucked, but dammit it was nine, and it had to be nine.
>>
>>91331293
Thanks I was almost going to have 7. Any advice on cutting people out/slimming it down? Who do I decide to drop
>>
>>91331293
When you have larger groups, such as six, and you need that number, a good recommendation is to split them off into pairs of four, or three, or two, for the story. Or, some personalities overpower others, meaning even if there are six, one or two stay quiet or act minimally when in the larger group. Or, depending on the situation, depends who's an active participant.
>>
>>91331578
i pared nine down to seven by getting rid of the ones who didnt contribute and weren't interesting. too bad since they were also the easiest to draw.

when TV or movies adapt books, they often combine two characters into one, so they serve both roles.. and it works out pretty well most of the time. makes the character more complex and interesting

>>91343531
PW advertising, though not much. I've thought about spending more money on advertising but every time I ask about it here people tell me it's useless and to befriend famous people like >>91343599 said.

I can never tell if the answers I get here are legit or just bitter, cynical nerds who want others to give up the same hope they gave up.

I also do a lot of posting on social media but it never really brings in new readers. The only real purpose it serves now is providing updates and stuff to some of the fans I already have.

I've read that article/post by the Miss Melee author and they seem to think posting to reddit is really helpful, but I don't know anything about that site or community so I've been leery about trying it.
>>
>>91343794
I wasn't joking. I mean I kinda was, since it's not that easy to just "befriend famous people", but that's what will get you the most success by far.

I have one friend who bought ad space on pretty big sites like Anime News Network, and it was a total waste of money. I have another friend who was promoted by a huge YouTuber, and now he has tens of thousands of subscribers himself.

Of course, you have to have a good comic in the first place or no one will come back, but if someone likes a famous person's stuff, they'll naturally want to see other things that person recommends. It's why drawing a ton of fan art also gets you noticed; people like what they already know.

The story is someone depressed goes about daily life in his own depressed way.
Also, how did you understood the story in this one?
Asking because I was curious whether it will be properly interpreted.

As to the penguin, I started drawing after a long break when my mom got in hospital few months back.
I was trying to cheer her on with comics (I know fucking childish) but since I havent drawn for a while I could only do simple stuff the kind I could finish fast.

It has pretty big quality jump with each comics and there are only 7 of those, you want each from the start or just few to see?

I bought a lot of new art supplies yesterday and among them was a set of new ultra thin 0.5 black gel pens, very weird not using ball point pens, this was the first thing i drew with them that doesnt look like a sloppy mess, i think i got the hang of them now, im so use to pencil and ball point i was using them the wrong way at first but i think i get them now, a million times better than ball point pens!

still need a ton of practice with them though, i just got them last night and havent even had them a full 24 hours yet, lol

Funny thing is, this penguin is what made me like drawing again, I think I was lost somewhere in the limbo of finishing a drawing and expecting good looking results and then getting disappointed.

>Not sure, but with the smile in the last panel, he seemed almost happy to die.
Well, the idea was this.
The dude falls from the lader, gets pierced and reader sees him reaching for mobile phone, expecting him to call for help since he reaches it but in the last panel its revealed that while he had the opportunity to call for help he played "panel de pon" instead, patiently waiting for death.
Maybe I need more panels with this character so the reader have certain expectation of him and things like "he wanted to die" will be more obvious.

>Might be issue of not developing characters enough outside of my head and whats obvious for me isn't obvious for anyone else.

Interesting points, though I'm not going for anything more realism based than say... psychonauts, jimmy neutron, bots master or invader zim. I just want to make sure the designs look complete and interesting and make "enough" sense as to not be too abstract. The idea of metallic skin is really neat and I really should have more vertebrates involved I'll definitely try and work on that but I'll just have them among the goofy jellyfish pods and fungus ships. I'll try and develop more of the "mineral" ships as well. But the fact you like a lot of the designs despite them being completely unrealistic is kind of what I'm striving for, so that's good.

I'm also working on some ships just made entirely of blackened bone sharps from giant cosmic beasts. Here's some WIPs.

Thanks for that! I was wondering if I could get any feedback on how I did.
>>
>>91348572
They're well done, but a lot of the reason for doing those is to get a gesture and a little more life into the figure.

Exaggerate the poses a bit more to get a sense of movement.

These are a ton better. You should also try loosening up a littlme more, don't be afraid to get really sketchy. Try conveying figures in fewer brushstrokes, and in shorter time intervals. Those 30 second pose drawing challenges are very helpful for this.

>>91348888
That's part of it. The other purpose of figure drawing is to better convey the movement and gesture of figures. Your drawings are pretty realistic and accurate, but at the same time a bit stiff. Try drawing faster and looser to put more energy into the poses.
>>
>>91348894

>can't lose you
>until we finally rid of him

also you spelled theodore 2 different ways (the signature looks like Theadoue?) but neither is the traditional spelling. Just in case that's what you were going for
>>
>>91348939
I guess I don't know what gesture is in this context.. and aren't the models usually sitting still, not moving? I know I'd love to sketch more MOVING models but that would require a good camera

Yes, the models are usually still, but the point is the still poses themselves have an action to them. You can see this in these pictures, even though this is a still image you can still tell that Tom is supposed to be punching with a lot of force due to the line of action in the pose.

In this context it means to capture the essence of the figure in a short time.
Personally, to get started with this, I would go trad for a little while. Get some charcoal and a big newsprint pad. You don't want undo and you do not want erase. These exercises are practice, they're not meant to look good or be shown off.
>>
>>91349071
yes it's a still image, but the models are literally sitting still. how do they have action to them? to put it another way, what's an example of a pose a person could take that would not have action, and how would you tell the difference? is it "Deviating from a T-pose" or deviating from lying down, or standing, or what?

>It is a little odd that the last one can emote
Initially he is suppose to have completely blank mask expression.
I am a bit projecting here and for me it is natural to show little emotion unless I am mad pissed and have little facial expression, I also react blandly to many things which often people take of sign of indifference or dissatisfaction.
Which is why a mask with no expression was chosen but I am only starting so I I am still finding a way to do this.
By story this mask at some point suppose to become part of him (first panel he put it on) and show his inner thoughts and sometimes interact with others (like trying to smile when he thinks no one watching scares people).

>so wait are you going to mouse ink over that one but leave the colors?
I do something like this, I draw with pencil and then go over with a black pen, then I scan it and save on PC.
I started to do it mainly because I am just learning as I go so often its an experiment which sometimes goes wrong so I like the option to just print my outlines again and redo with no stress.

Since this point I do two things, I can either paint with pencils original image or take my scan, make white transparent tweak the line to make it softer and darker and just paint with mouse on layer under.
I'll show you an example next post.

>>91348489
>this one I don't get, if there is a joke. I guess just that she was nice to the butterfly so it came back?
Its more about me wishing her well, the one with dog scratching back its me wishing her regain sensitivity on her skin and the one with the butterfly its about forcing trough bad mood.
They do have some story behind them and a message but for me its hard to find a way to convey that message I guess.

>>
>>91349171
Just because someone is still doesn't mean their pose lacks gesture. In the Pieta, for example, even though it's a statue you can still see how Jesus is slumping down in Mary's arms. His legs and arms seem to be dangling, and his neck is limp. Even though this is a statue and really his entire body is made of stone, we can still see the movement of the figure becoming limp and it creates the illusion of having actually caught someone lying dead in another's arms.

For now this painting thing, maybe someone found a way to do it better, dont know this is how I do it.

First panel is just pencil drawing with dark pen over it and pencil erased, I scan it and color the original with pencils.
Which is second panel.

Then I go to my scan, tweak it in gimp to get nice dark smooth lines and remove leftovers from pencil and erasing and just paint it with mouse.
Last panel.

I cant, we are poorfags, mom was the only one working I call every day employment office and go to interviews but all I hear is BS about job market (after being 10 years a hiki I can see how I am unemployable at the age of 33 as well)

If I wont find something till june we might lose a flat.
Right now my sis and her bf giving me cash but even with this I a eating once a day and $25 is two weeks of food.
And if I find job it will be $500 at best all of which will go toward paying flat loan, medicine for mom and then probably food.
I dread to think about clothes because I lost 16 kg in the last couple of months and my stuff already hanging on me.
Since I was a hiki I had barely any clothes and now I am getting too small for them (not that I am complaining, clipping own toenails without sweating is reward in itself)

What can I do, I dont have friends or anything, I am searching for work and in hibernation mode while waiting when someone hires me.
Vidya, movies and music dont do anything for me for a long time so just sit there and draw is the only thing i can do.
>>
>>91349735
Alright, I guess I'm starting to get it.
It probably doesn't help that I feel self-concious deviating too much from 'stiff' poses in real life. i feel like the majority of "gestures" are embarrassing, and try to keep them out of my habits.. I certainly don't notice them in others
>>
>>91349784
Well you don't need to color twice, you can save some work and then use that time to do more art.
>incurable
oh. well shit.

And thats about it, thats all penguins I have for now.

I dont have a blog but couple days ago I decided to make a DA acc hoping that I dump into it all my comics idea I had but never drew.
Since finding a work is the only option for me now, if things go well I wont have much time for drawing so now is the time to do it and disappear into some low qualification physical labour job.
My best chance right now is a job on the line where people who worked here say its modern day slavery, in EU country nonetheless but with no jobs, what will you do.

Check folder Pii for more penguins (if I post more), I have many sketches waiting to be done.
But also have few ideas from games I would like to draw.

>oh. well shit.
Yeah, Neuromyelitis optica, its amazing I can write and say this shit correctly...
I guess the universe really didnt liked us that much, after years of struggle and more than 40+ years of work now my mom will spend rest of her days with this shit while getting pension of $250 that is not enough to cover basic treatment and flat loan.
Not only that but this shit suppose to be rare as fuck and yet, my mom got it in the only country in EU that doesnt have a national plan of combating rare diseases.

Tell me god is not real, it cant be a fucking coincidence.
Wanted to off myself for years and when I was ordering grill and coal for my own hibachi my sis brought me the news.
Now I cant even off myself and cant even wish for a chance to do so because a chance would mean an outcome I am afraid the most atm.
>>
>>91349932
>Well you don't need to color twice
Also, I am just starting drawing seriously (and ending at the same time) so I wanted to see whether I could get this good looking digital drawing effect I seen people have on their picks.

It looked better in my head but...
What do you think about necropus digital drawing in this >>91349535 picture.

Asking because I had an idea of putting those digitalis (mouse drawings) on cups and selling them.
But I really have trouble telling whether its something people would buy.
Its like I cant objectively tell whether my art is any good.

fuck and a half, dude. that's brutal. but that's kind of the life we've all made for ourselves here. it's just part of the whole meat experience. sometimes your meat rots. it aint gonna be like that afterwards.
in the meantime you can create beauty, and it's clear you see the good effects it can have.

Neither I ever expected my mom or myself to be a part of a slice of life dramma and its not as fucking cool as anime makes it look.

>>91350169
> it's clear you see the good effects it can have.
I know and it makes me feel dirty every time I think about it, it feels like its my fault.
I sometimes ask "universe" just fucking why, was it really to make me move my ass, is my mom not important, did it happen because I am a lazy piece of shit hiki?
Why didnt it just gave me something like this, is it because I would off myself the next morning after diagnosis with no regrets so it had to be something to check mate me.
I know it sounds stupid and its doubtful there is a concious universe but this thing hit so many places at once I really cant see it as just coincidence.
I am also a total wreck right now with some weird mood swings so if I sound stupid thats probably it.

Anyway have 2 ideas I absolutely love, two strips inspired by XCOM and Yakuza and I really want them out so I'll start working on the now.
I was postponing them because I am still shit at drawing but now I am really pressed by time.
After that I might return to penguins, I kinda stopped drawing them lately because I am afraid my mood going to taint the happy picture or something.

Lulzy picture in case I dont return, I was supposed to draw request of some dude and it was supposed to be a comic strip but I drew dat ass and it was so fucking sweet (it was a fluke desu) and no matter what I couldnt draw the face so I decided to postpone it till I learn how to draw the face but then I dropped drawing for nth time.
The pic is from 2015 I didnt even remembered I had it.

Ha ha, you know what they say about a girl in kneepads!
>>
>>91348975
I will say that the first one is a gramatical error, but the other two are part of there more verbose way of speaking.
>>
>>91350167
you're good, but downright amazing for a beginner. i think both the digital and the traditional coloring look serviceable. I think if it wasn't for that whole real-life-sucks-for-artists thing, you could really do this for a living
I'll say this, I don't think mug prints sell as well as other prints, t-shirts, or just straight-up art prints for putting on the wall.. Personally I wish folders were still a thing, so I could have my art printed on those.
Definitely give art sales a shot, don't bother with deviantart's print shop but something else that doesn't involve risk on your end
>>
>>91350738
You're handling it pretty well. If you wanna talk about it or something you can always skype me, if you wanna talk to a stranger. You literally wouldn't be the first depressed polish guy on my skype
In any case, all you have control of is what you do in response to things that happen. Someday in 100 years they're going to look back at all of our lives and think we were all in horrible pain all the time because we didn't have endorphine regulation implants and we had to walk on our legs.. some of the greatest art ever made came from tragedy. It doesn't mean it HAD to happen, the way like, a savior HAS to sacrifice himself for it to count.. it just means you made the best of it.
>>
>>91347832
Make a friend. I've got friends who, while they normally charge people for drawings, will draw shit for me free of charge. It's not even networking, it's just making a friend who happens to be good at art

Also, every girlfriend I've ever had was able to draw or paint. Having a grill fiend who will draw or paint for you is very helpful
>>
>>91351202
Leaving out words isn't more verbose. certainly it's not the way longnose mcgee usually talks. Perhaps you meant 'until we're finally rid of him' and i'm pretty sure you didn't mean to say that the great-grandfather has the father's powers. maybe ' family's powers' ?
>>
>>91352547
Oh yeah, I did mess up the father line, I'll fix that

But I still don't see whats wrong with the rid of him line, I think I'm just gonna keep that one in.
>>
>>91352327
>something else that doesn't involve risk on your end

My idea was to order some other company to print things for me (shirts as well) and then re-sell it online to see if it even sells but then there is chance to get burn on taxes (if someone thinks I run a regular business) as well as it requires money which I dont have.

I could take a loan for own business to get myself stuff needed but then I am obliged to pay taxes for business every month and business must run a year and I cant take another job during this time and those are conditions regardless of how well the business does.
There are no "no risk" scenarios for me, unfortunately.
I realise fully well that were my drawings (digital or pen) stretched on a wall, all my weak drawfu would be too obvious to hide so I decided to go with small prints that can mask my weak technique and lack of skill.

>you're good, but downright amazing for a beginner.
Not sure whether I qualify for a beginner tho, I doodled my whole life but never seriously and I did one mistake that kept me for years in the same place.

There is some fuckery was going on because I was drawing very sparsely and quality jumps were all over the place something I cant explain.
Check those highschool drawings, they are all from the same year.

You got rid of a word.

Until we are finally rid of him.
Until we finally get rid of him.
Until we finally rid ourselves of him.
>>
>>91353267
Ok but I will delete them later, I dont really like them.
They are now in the scrapbook.

The main point is, I am not sure whether I can pretend I am an incredibly talented beginner since I was doodled my whole life except.

I would draw like 10 pictures in a year, sometimes more, and the quality would be all over the place.
Sometimes it was a picture when even today I look and think "wow, I really drew that?" and the other time it would be something like "Yak, I really drew that?"

Then I would drop drawing for a while, pick up again after couple of years and its like I never held a pencil in my hand before and I have to relearn everything.
I reach approximately same level and drop it again and then repeat.

On the up side, now for the first time I went and read about anatomy, proportions, perspective, before I would draw this but not really consciously.
>>
>>91352717
yeah that's why i'm saying get involved with a print on demand service where they take a cut of the money instead. just make sure to shop around and make sure it's the best
>>
>>91353070

>>91353782

>>
>>91354761

>>91354790
You will notice that those pics come from 2007- dropped drawing, 2009 - dropped, 2015 - dropped and now when I picked it up once again I couldnt draw a straight line or a sphere as seen here >>91349646
So yeah, I wonder where I would be had I kept drawing trough all those years and actually studied.

Anyway, going to sleep now, thanks guys for the chat and the input, will try tomorrow post some GITS inspired strips I am working on if I finish them by then.

new markers to by the way, heres another gel pen sketch attempt

this is a Goth Grill Z character

i still suck at gel pens, i tried single strokes from the elbow and none of the lines connected and it looks retarded, so i still need a lot of practice with these new pens :/
