I have a question for everyone here thats making your own webcomic, whats the general age range of everybody here? I'm 28 and would like to eventually get published, but most of my ideas for comics are kind of weabooish anime inspired, and I'm wondering how old you can be if you want to go in this direction with your comics.
>>
>>91090067
I'm 18 right now. I'm more of an artist than a writer, but I also hope to get published doing my own series someday.
>>
>>91090067
There are no age limits on making webcomics. Make them about what _you_ want, what you are interested in.
>>
>>91090067
I'm 24. I used to draw "anime style" stuff when I was younger but reading other webcomics online made me pull away from the style as much as I could.

I don't really feel like there's an age limit on it, just how well you can do it. I would be more wary of people being critical of someone non-asian doing it, I've seen a lot of people snub their noses at american-made mangas and the like.
>>
>>91090067
I'm 19!
>>
>>91090151

Yeah I am aware of that, i want to take some courses in the near future and practice drawing other styles to improve my drawing skills.

Gesture sketches always help loosen up your style and hone your eye for both shape and value. I'm shit at them but that's just because I don't do them very often. Still life drawing helps with value, shape, and also some mechanical skills as well.

As for the thread topics:
> How far have you planned your webcomic?
Had it all planned out at one point but two years ago I scrapped almost everything and started over.

>Do you have the whole script written out of are you writing page-by-page?
When I have more world-building finalized I plan on doing a full script.

>Share some of your future plans! What scenes, characters, locations, events, etc are you excited for!
I'm mostly excited for getting this world and story and character mob I've been lugging around out onto paper where people can read it, enjoy it, and talk about it. My goal is to make something I'll be proud of when it's all said and done.

Mostly frustrated with myself because I can't seem to hold focus for more than a few months at a time. That or I think about all the work I STILL need to do and it gets overwhelming. It's like building a house all by yourself.
>>
>>91089314
Not the same person but I already started messing with it and needed a post to reply to.

Thing is, real "extra dark" people wouldn't work in comics because printing in the correct colors to get there would make them look like a phantom.

When it comes to coloring for comics you kinda need to imagine that everything dark has a layer of fog over it to make sure it's readable. Your character can be extra dark... compared to everything else.

I've thought about the printing issue, but I've read enough tricks and image settings to avoid the overall darkening. I've gotten some test images printed off before and with normal settings in Pshop they come out like burnt toast. I can't remember the specific settings I used but recently a piece I did printed almost perfect for a calendar page commission I did for a company.

>>91090434
Typed all that before your pic popped up. I see what you mean! I'll repost a sketch I put in the last thread that doesn't have the warm highlight. I think I need to shade them less like I would a lighter skinned person and use very specific coloring for their pigment (their as in Halle's and her pseudo-dad). As in, learning how literal dark skin takes to light better.

Ah, well, the blue girl is nice, but can also be really smug at times, and the red head is kind of dumb, but also tries to be motivational and hates people who self depriciate themselves

And I was thinking that they would already be in a relation ship, unless seeing how they got together would be interesting then i guess that would be cool if you guys really prefer that.

>>91088524
wait, you mean bleached? That's something else entirely.
they look interesting in this one, actually kinda like those natives in Kong. I always thought it was a shame people don't naturally come in that color because it looks really nice
>>91089491
that's all anyone can ask.
>>91089530
That is important to note, as noted here >>91015033 some crit is legit, some isn't.. but some of it's just opinion, but a lot of opinion is legit and semi-universal
>>
>>91089942
I've got like three or four levels of planning, and it's really hard to sort through them because they're all jumbled up.. everything from 'this is dialogue should happen' all the way up to 'this is a general theme that should be illustrated' and everything in between
sadly none of it really shows up in the comic, but a lot of unintentional ones do, so it all evens out.

right now I've used up as many ideas for new settings and events that I think I can squeeze in (that's what the splitting up was for) so now I have to just order all the final stuff and make it work and live up to all the other 'endings' that it didn't end at before

I also have a few bits of planning for the next iteration of the comic, especially things I want not to be so inconvenient or unbalanced this time (for example, keep the fucking cast smaller, stupid.. even though I already have at least five i want to use)
>>

I just saw the original hey arnold claymation and the credits said it was made in 1965, so if craig bartlett can wait 30 years to get his own cartoon, and over 50 years to get the movie he wanted, I think we can all wait

weird though, it looked like 80s claymation and everyone said it aired in the 80s

OK, so I've got an idea, but I'm not really sure how good it is, what if the Black Knight, instead of being an infamous and evil knight, were something more like morgana's personal army? Like really shitty people who decided to enlist in the Black Knights, and she like boosts them up with her sorcery?

I'm going to be 28 next week. My webcomic is an idea that started when I was 16, and I've locked it in that time period. It takes place in 2005 and is about 15-to-17-year-olds. If actual present day teens find that relatable then that's fine, but the real target audience are the people who would have nostalgic feelings about being that age at that time. I like to think that I write teenagers well enough that real teens would see some appeal.

also im torn between wanting to do all ages stuff, but at the same time hardcore stuff like zonetan and shadman

i mean i want an all ages comic but i also want to draw sexy risky cheesecake whenever i want, which i know i cant do if i want it to be all ages

like why cant i draw porn of all my characters? im a grown ass man! wtf? lol, but at the same time i wont even though i want to to keep it all ages and worthy of being picked up by a big comic book publisher or animation studio one day.

one day soon i hope!

mfw i want my cake and eat it to, mfw deep down i have this horrible feeling that im never going to make it...
>>
I don't know how to pace the appearance of the rogues. Perhaps the archenemy should be less frequent than the others, reserved for special occasions? Seems like in my current outlines, the other antagonists are being brushed aside, running the risk of being irrelevant.

And for the purpose of this discussion, I define the 'archenemy' as 'villain for which the animosity with the hero is personal'. Not just some bullshit where they just fight often, but where the two sides are in a deep personal conflict for reasons important to who they are as people. (mutual slights, ideological differences, you killed my loved one, etc)

I hope I articulated that clearly.

So eventually people there made pic related and stopped replying to him, because there's no point. He eventually came back here because he knows here people will pity him and give him the attention he doesn't deserve.

Mainly just his lack of improvement and endless stream of mediocre art from what I know.

Honestly, I don't get why people get so upset at him. His art's not great but he seems to be at least alright as a person, and to occasionally takes criticism. Compared to people like Bones he's pretty alright imho.
>>
>>91102067
Dewd is a special case that manages to rub every person the wrong way in its own unique way. Just give it time, he will make something to piss you off as well.
I thought like this guy once >>91102286 and I still remember what did it for me, it was the Overwatch character ripoff episode, where he kept insisting he didn't know anything about Overwatch, didn't see any similarity to the designs at all, and then I understood everything we see happening on this comic is ripped off of what he is consuming at the moment. Right now he is introducing a Jojo character, I believe. What a lazy uncreative piece of shit.
>>
>>91102067
Dewd is a cool guy but he just happens to be te slowest person here when it comes to improvement but he does improve from time to time, you only notice that when you have been here for a while

i still don't get what is the story of his comic but i like the characters he makes with silly hats

rotten strawberries was another dude who started posting bad stuff but recently has improved a lot, i love seeing how people improve in these threads, i believe someday dewd will find a way to polish his weird ass drawings into something good, the guy actually has passion

the only person that everyone hates here is bones there is no salvation for that guy and he has ruined many threads

I'm glad someone gets this. I see so much intentional ugliness in the name of not drawing too samey or unrealistically or any of a number of other reasons and it's like.. no. art has been about bringing out the beauty of both real life and your imagination since the beginning. if you wanna argue beauty in ugliness, fine, i'm down. give it a shot, show me how it works.. but for god's sake don't ignore your instincts and then think you're somehow above the rest of us

>hundreds of poorly-paced shitty pages before my comic picks up
>sitting with the dread of knowing most new readers won't want to deal with it

I just don't know what to do. I want my comic to be a fun experience from start to finish, I don't want it to feel like a chore for new readers to get to the good stuff, but this culture of preservaing and progressing that permeates webcomics makes it so hard to think of a way to deal with it.

What's the name of your comic?
I assume it's a long for comic.
Also, when is it going to end? Could you edit it so that it concludes sooner? What is the shortest way to the ending? Could you do that? That way you could start over with a new project AND achieve finishing your current comic and keep your readers happy.

>What's the name of your comic?
I'm still kind of scared to go sharing it yet.

>I assume it's a long for comic.
600+ pages.

>Also, when is it going to end?
I have the story planned out, but it's hard to say how many pages it'll be. I've been ballparking 2-3 thousand by the end.

>Could you edit it so that it concludes sooner?
Not really. The problem with my improvement is that the story going forward is much more airtight. It's the early years that I fucked so much up.

>That way you could start over with a new project AND achieve finishing your current comic and keep your readers happy.
I'd rather not struggle to rush to the end of it just for the sake of ending it. Especially if it means a bigger ratio of bad-good.

It's the old pages I need to do something about, not the stuff I haven't gotten to.

How do I know what'll "hook" new readers?
What are some definite "don't"s? (I know the most obvious one is not starting with a wall of text.)

I don't think so, I mean. I'm happy(ish) with where my style is at the moment, and I'm always learning. I'm not saying manga style is BAD it's just not really the endgame of what I want. I always grew up loving Mignola and Jeff Smith (the Bones series is really what kick started my want to do a comic). The web comic I really got into first was The Meek some years ago.

I'll be brutally honest. Don't restart, whatever you do. It's more important to finish a story if you want to improve. Your problem is you need to learn writing technique. Especially story structure. If you're at page 600 and still don't know exactly the amount of pages you have left, you have NOT planned your story as well as you think. I keep hearing this from comic artists all the time. "It's hard to tell since it depends on so many things and..." no. Just no. Have you reached the inciting event or the first plot point or not? Because you should know. If you don't, your story might be anything from 600 - 10 000 pages for all you know. If you know you've passed the first plot point at, say, page 500, your story SHOULD be 2000 pages long, give or take a couple hundred. If not, you have a structure problem.

If you haven't reached the fist plot point yet, you really need to start editing. 600 pages is way too long to read just to get to the main plot.

Look. Don't be discouraged. Just read about story structure and start Killin your darlings. That's all. I'm saying this because so many artists keep asking the same questions and the road always leads back to story structure, which is something more people should study.

Same, bone had everything down and it was an amazing adventure to read when I was young. I don't remember what my first webcomic was, but meek was pretty early on. The art was my favorite, and I liked the split story lines but I don't think they were well planned out. It was a good starting point to branch out to other comics though

Take a break from your serious work for a little while and loosen up with some sketches. If the beginning has no redeemable qualities other than to set things up, then you probably need to rewrite it.

Otherwise, if your characters and their interactions are interesting enough, you can hold people until things get really interesting.

Designing characters for Chapter 8; all the human warriors are completely painted, so I've still gotta design that, but drawing paint in this character design would make it too charged.

>>91117483
I think body paint would help illistrate the fact that they aren't furries, but minotauroids.. because you couldn't paint fur.but you could accomplish the same just by making their skin nicely brown (i dunno where these fucks are from) so it's not necessary. they could have one unifying simple paint design maybe, just over one shoulder or something, Goron style

If you want to make it less furry-like I'd suggest making the ears more human like as well? Not all the way human, but possibly angled and shaped a little different.

>>91119180
I think that'd make it more furrylike. I feel like there's a big difference between animal head on human body and both head and body being halfway between both
sadly a lot of furries get drawn with a half-and-half body and then a totally animal head, which just bothers me

I would stop short of drawing the toes like they were n64 character models, and that hand on the swirly ornate sword is just atrocious compared to the previous one holding the cane, but really the primary differences i'm noticing are not level of detail, but the switch from a ghavial to an alligator. either way the backwards knees are wrong so watch out for that, but I generally like this guy!

I guess I can answer your question by referencing another part of the drawing: hats like those used to take a lot of careful haberdashing and be rather expensive, until someone invented the stovepipe hat and it was ready to wear right off the rack. There's such a thing as good simplification, but on the other hand, the sneaker continues to evolve and become more complex, while there is very little respect for crocs

I plan extensively. I had stories ready before I could draw at all. I am excited that I can mKe things work the way I want now, and I can't wait to see how shitty today's art looks to me in a couple years.
I am going to relaunch in late april early may, but my preview stuff has generated unexpected traction.
Also, I am way older than anyone in here. One of the reasons I spend time in places like /co/ is that not everyone has surrendered yet.

Don't ever give up. Would you rather be a broken old fuck, or a broken old fuck who can DRAW?

re:the thread activity

I've had an outline for the first few chapters of my comic planned out for awhile and an idea for where I want to go for the rest of it. Trouble is I keep going back and rewritting shit. Some of it was cutting shit out and making a better story but I'm always worried that I'm using rewriting my story as an excuse not to pull the trigger and make the damn thing already.

Thread activity:
>How far have you planned your webcomic?
We know the end and the key plot points, but not exactly how we're going to get there just yet.

>Do you have the whole script written out or are you writing page-by-page?
I write the script out a full chapter at a time, and I go through several drafts before I hand it over to the artist. It takes about a year to work through a chapter, and I draft and finalise the next chapter before the previous one finishes. I sometimes tweak bits of dialogue as we go along, but it's usually just really pedantic grammatical stuff.

>Share some of your future plans! What scenes, characters, locations, events, etc are you excited for!
In a nutshell: more fight scenes, more monsters, supernatural sleuthing, splitting the party, drama, plot, and a little romance.
>>
>>91132764
The colors are showing up fine, I've just never gotten pressure sensitivity to work consistently and resetting the tablet drivers only works half of the time. That wouldn't be so bad if it didn't pair with my computer treating short pen strokes as right-clicking, which selects color, so I'm rarely able to do detail work. It's really disheartening.
>>
>>91110906
>If you're at page 600 and still don't know exactly the amount of pages you have left, you have NOT planned your story as well as you think
Not him but that's one of the most fucking retarded things I've ever read.
>>
>>91134323
You need to have an ending and major story events planned out, and a backlog will definitely help if you want to keep a consistent schedule at the start, but you also can't put off starting that backlog (after you've gotten a visual sense of how you want to do it) or you'll just keep fine-tuning and you'll never actually put the thing out.
>>
>>91135513
If your story has an end planned and it isn't meant to be a sprawling shonen journey then 600 pages with no end in sight probably means you've fucked up the pacing. Totally depends on story and individual page length, though.
>>

This one.
The tablet I had before this had the same issue and this tablet's had these issues over three different computers. I tried replacing it with a Monoprice after a total driver uninstall a few years back but it did it too. It feels like a curse.
>>
>>91135918
I was saying that if you have the end of the story planned but from 600 pages in you're either a) far enough from the end or b) haven't gotten enough of a grasp on your own pacing that you can't estimate how long the last stretch of the story will be in pages, you're probably meandering.

Again, it totally depends on the kind of comic you're making. If you're writing a sprawling fantasy/action piece with a bunch of arcs then it's reasonable to go well beyond 600 pages. If your pages are 1-3 panels and you want to tell a long-form story with that then 600 pages will be likely be proportionally early in the story compared to something more traditionally formatted. But a traditionally formatted comic telling a traditionally formatted plot with a beginning, middle, and end should probably be written more tightly.

These aren't hard and fast rules, I'm sure there are excellent exceptions to them, it's just useful to evaluate when you're that far in how much further you want to go.

sucks about the bad luck there but I bet you can get it working
>>
>>91138917
Yeah, it's just a weird thing where holding it down without moving it registers as a right click. I use Paint Tool SAI.
>>
>>91137985
One would hope you'd have the pace by then, but what if your pace keeps changing? Some people just go where the comic takes them, and it keeps messing with your expectations
>>
>>91139039
hmm, more points for sai
have you tried other programs to make sure it's the wrong driver for your tablet and not just for that program? Also, I've known some things to interfere weirdly. like for example if I use VLC at all it turns pressure sensitivity off until I close that program or reopen photoshop (and then if I pause or unpause vlc again it shuts pressure sensitivity off again)

It happens from startup with all background processes closed, and it isn't exclusive to SAI, but I haven't experimented too much other programs. Might be worth a shot.

I try to get the whole script for a chapter written out when I start drawing it; doesn't ALWAYS work out though

>Share some of your future plans! What scenes, characters, locations, events, etc are you excited for!
Two things, really:
1. FINALLY finishing the current story arc. I'll be done with Chapter 7 this week, when we just got 1 chapter + epilogue to end it.
2. Starting the Second story arc. This time much more of a Low Fantasy feel to it; it won't have any magical elements besides the two main characters and is instead a more typical Knight's tale

I have this problem too. Generally I'm of the opinion that it's better to get shit pretty solid before starting, especially with webcomics because so many slow to a crawl when the artist inevitably gets to the point where they didn't plan out enough and has to write page by page instead of outlining.

That said, one thing that's helped me actually get a move on with mine has been tweaking the first few chapters so that they're almost, but not quite, a standalone story. Basically a simple three-act story that leads up to the inciting incident of the ACTUAL first act, but with enough of a mini plot to hold its own. It's really let me get a feel for the characters and the world before throwing them into the grander story. Not sure if that would work for your plot, but it might force you to get at least one solid chunk completely written so you can start putting stuff out there.
>>
>>91149911
see I find it goes the other way, they START out doing pages by the seat of their pants (too impatient to wait when there's pages to post) then slow down when it starts working so they start planning more in order to do what it feels like they owe to their audience

i like your idea though, some of my favorite comics start out with a selfcontained story for the first chapter, then once it's over they take a break and start doing more of a long-form comic
>>
I want to write a slice-of-life comic set in a high school for main characters, so its populated with archetypes from different genres and demographics (overbearing soccer players, seinen psychic delinquents, melodramatic tennis players etc). All the students are ranked on how strong a protagonist they would be, and the lower-ranked are all relegated to side/background characters while the higher-ranked rise to the likes of being club leaders, class presidents, student council etc.

But "school for main characters" seems a little thin in premise, so I consider having the kids be ordinary but giving them bodysuits to make them powerful instead. S/A-ranked students get the most benefit from the suits, C-ranked get no benefits but no drawbacks, D and below start straining their bodies to stay mobile. Then the setting of the story can be filled in (the technological/social progress and obstacles of people being augmented, how bias has changed/fallen over generations) and that can influence how characters in the story can think.

Alternative I can skip that, keep the first story idea and make the history just a fantastical clusterfuck of a setting (grim detectives, wise-cracking superheroes, paragons on the streets).

>>
>>91152226
i've never seen any light magic that WAS related to fire. in my experience it falls under a few categories
>lasers, beams, rays, sparkly shiny star projectiles, etc
>forcefields (i guess because holograms? doesn't make sense but there it is), illusions, invisibility, etc
>blinding flashes or some kind of magical light that illuminates secrets
>holy shit, purifying, healing, etc. here the light is more metaphorical

>i dunno man, empowering clothes is kinda stepping on kill la kill's toes a bit

I guess, but to honest I think Kill la Kill wasted its own premise, so I'm fine with that. They didn't really do anything with the school setting or empowering clothes, just explained it to the audience and then went 'here's our protagonist who makes all these ranks redundant'.

>>
>>91154206
Alright. How do you think shadow magic be utilized in combat, then? Besides, hiding in the shadows and striking assassin style, that's already covered.
>>
>>91154278
Not him but theres a number of ways you can do shadow magic that doesnt involve le sneaky sneak
For one theres that voodoo shit where your shadow goes out and attacks other peoples shadows, dealing damage to them
you could have their shadow bubble up and explode or even come to life dark link style
you could also have magic that causes shadows strain against the light, causing huge amounts of pressure to build up around them
>>
>>91154278
shadow's a lot harder. Oddly enough it tends to overlap and include the illusion stuff.. plus it has a few opposite thematic stuff like being demonic/vampiric style, life draining, or just forming evil-looking shapes, sickles, spikes, etc out of blackness.. causing various status ailments.. you also get teleportation a lot. but none of that has anything to do with darkness in any way other tham metaphorically. Only hiding in shadow and blinding people makes direct sense.
It's hard to think of a real authentic 'elemental' attack for darkness since in reality it's just 'nothing'. so you could roll with that, include the power of void, of vacuum.. depriving people of oxygen, deleting objects from existence, causing catastrophic cavitation (like a mantis shrimp), that kind of thing. but honestly i'm all for just ripping off another element and paletteswapping it. black fire, black lasers, or maybe making black holes.
>>
>>91154406
>honestly i'm all for just ripping off another element and paletteswapping it. black fire, black lasers, or maybe making black holes.

I might just have light lasers for light magic and black lasers for shadow magic. By lasers, I also mean like, light energy balls, shadow energy balls. Just pure "energy," if you will. I suppose no one will judge shit like that too harshly, right?
>>
>>91098766

holy shit i think this comment made bones kill himself... is he dead?

poor guy, he just wanted to be a part of a group of artist that made webcomics like he did, he even had everyones webcomic here in his firefox bookmarks he posted a few threads back... but he chose the wrong place to hang out with other webcomic artists I guess since everyone here is a terrible TERRIBLE person that should feel bad about themselves from the time they wake up to the time they go to sleep and should probably anhero themselves desu.
>>
>>91154873
i mean, you won't be alone
it also helps if you make them stylistically different. if a laz0r beam creates a lot of heat and maybe mirage effects in the air from said heat, maybe a shadow beam chills things or seems to drain their color. my japanese animes tend to give shadow attacks a lot of crackling lightning around them, whereas western things seem to make anything black glow purple, as if perhaps its emissions are just out of the visible spectrum range
>>
>>91155110
That gives me an idea. Light magic energy is a mix of heat and lightning, whereas shadow magic is a mix of cold and... the opposite of lightning, I suppose. I'll have to think on that one. Ice feels a little too easy, but it might be what I choose.

Either way, neither shadow or light magics are "good" or "bad," so I'm not worried about symbolism in those regards.
>>
>>91155255
hmmm sound maybe. lightning is electrons moving through a substance, sound is vibrations moving through something while its substance stays in place.. plus you'd have the fun of every darkness attack having a super low-frequency rumble to contrast the high pitched pew pew of lasers. for the sake of the jargon you'd say 'cold and thunder'

Consistent scheduled updates is ideal if you plan on finishing a quest.

Everything else is subjective, or directly related to your ability to improvise.

You don't need to give the audience every option imaginable all the time, but every once and a while throw in something that encourages exploration where it makes sense. Let them use their imagination; They'll get more invested in it, and it will help hone your improvisation skills. Remember that your readers aren't the only people that need to have fun. You have the wheel, and if you don't like where you're going you'd better turn that fucker around fast.

Today's page. Coloring them out of order.

As far as thread topic goes:
1) It's all planned except for specific emotional beats. This is meant to be a relatively short story.

2) I'm not really writing page by page as much as trying to nail certain arcs. At the moment I'm sowing the "seeds of doubt" in the MC, to push him into action to leave the salt mines and board the train to nowhere. Harder than I thought. I'm still on the fence whether I should explicitly state that the "unsalt" is sugar or not. I guess there are cons and pros of it....

3) I'm pumped to draw the payout for the whole setup, which is where the MC hits their real low point and then fate smacks them in the face.

Chill, it was just a general criticism.

>>
>>91170123
Personally, I storyboard the comic like a movie, not even worrying about panels. After that, once it's revised enough, most pages will naturally group together.
>>
>>91170123
I mainly think of expressions. I include as much dialogue as I can with the given gestures and expressions that I've drawn, and if the dialogue changes mood or requires a new gesture, well, it's new panel time.

It'll come to you with time and experience, but things like scene changes or surprise revelations* are suitable places to put page breaks.
If you have an idea of how many panels a page you draw, then putting in a page break every (eg) 6 to 8 panels is a good rule of thumb. Adjust this according to scene changes, story flow, etc.
It's an art, not a science, and part of the writing side of making comics.

*While less applicable for purely web comics, if you're thinking about having a print version, put dramatic revelations and such like on a left hand side page, especially if it's a splash panel. If it's on the right, when the reader turns the page there's the chance they'll get a spoiler before reading the build up on the previous page.
>>
>>91171683
>If it's on the right, when the reader turns the page there's the chance they'll get a spoiler before reading the build up on the previous page.

Does anyone else here try to improve their comic by studying? I've recently dug into "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud and "The Anatomy of a Story" by John Truby. I've also found some really great art books and art tutorial books, I think its really helping

I honestly don't understand how studying helps, other than a basic "how to arrange panels" level and the like. I found that just drawing comics and getting critique and trying to identify my own mistakes is what helped improve my comics the most.
>>
>>91177807
You study art not comics. Composition used in illustrations can be adapted to arranging comic pages and studying fine art in general helps you to not draw like a pissbabby which makes your comic suck less.
>>
>>91177883
I get studying art, as in gesture sketches, color studies, backgrounds studies, etc. I do those and they help, but anon was talking about just studying from a book. I don't understand how just reading Understanding Comics helps unless you do a lot of practical exercises to put that information to use

21. I've been coming up with comic ideas since I was around 11 but didn't start actually drawing them until I was 19.

I've been working at improving my early stories over the last few years, which have generally solid bases for plotlines but dumb details here and there because a middle-schooler made them. Like a story that takes place in a laboratory where the main character has dumb angel wings (because I enjoyed D.N.Angel and those Maximum Ride books) but also has a very emotionally charged plot and concepts I still think are fascinating. If I can rework it properly I'd put it on the queue right after Lido and my potential sequel to Lido (which also needs story work).

I also had a zombie story that I used to funnel all of my unaffiliated character designs into a single comic (including an albino supermodel of all things) but had a plotline I loved and genuinely don't think I've ever seen used in a zombie story, somehow? It was really basic, probably couldn't carry the story very far on its own, but if I could come up with a stronger main plot it could be attached to... I still wouldn't make it. Who the fuck wants another zombie story? But it'd be very satisfying. Maybe it's worth a short vignette, like 10-20 pages, where the reader can just mentally paste in literally any other crappy zombie setting because the zombies are so rarely the point anyway.

but I did have some projects for leftover character designs to go to, including one about a stupidly massive fighting tournament with multiple elaborate factions
and yeah I used to think about genre-work and realize that while my idea might have added one unique thing, it wouldn't carry a whole long story

doubt there's an age limit

been drawing ideas since I was 14

My own was pretty weeb too. I had a comic idea where the story revolved around a guy born into a tribe of prophets/seers who would learn of oncoming danger and find heroes to beat it but the twist was that this time the prophecy never specified who it was so not even the seers would know, so the main character set out for heroes by himself

lot of it was inspired (read: heavily lifted) from a Dragon Quest IX save file I had, as well as some FE Blazing Sword cause the seer/prophet MC basically acts as a tactician as well as a guardian

I'm working on another idea but maybe I'll revisit it one day, who knows

Honestly I sort of have to agree with Bones for once, though I feel it's not just the hair that looks a little odd, but the whole color palette.
You have these bright, saturated colors like Saffron's hair and purple shirt, as well as the green dude's hair, but the rest of the palette is basically pastels. Are you trying to go for a bright, cartoonish palette or a soft pastel one? You could probably find a way to make them work if you really tried, but imho these colors aren't really working.
I know you don't color your comic, but this has been bothering me about the art for the whole chapter.
I tried playing around with Saffron's color scheme a little bit, I'm not going to say these are any better but I think at the least, you could desaturate her hair a bit.

i like brownskinned redheads, but I find that look works best on someone feisty.. a genie, a gerudo, a weird androgynous skinny kid.. something like that. not a big mannish warrior woman. Those can be brownskinned with white or light lavender hair, sure, or brown with black hair like Lana Kane..
THAT SAID, pic related. But you know, I didn't remember her with red hair. in fact i looked her up specifically thinking she didn't have it.
in retrospect though her personality is stoic and gerudoesque.

For gesture studies you really want to focus on the movement/action of the figure rather than detailing hair, clothes, etc. You should try drawing real people rather than copying other people's artworks too, when you're still starting out. Even if you want to draw anime/cartoons having a basis in reality really helps.
You seem to have decent observational skills and control of a pencil, just keep on practicing, anon.

I follow your comic! I check back every few weeks to binge on updates. There hasn't been a lot going on, but I find your characters charming. I don't know if I'll ever get around to coloring this, so I figured I'd just give it to you now.
>>
>>91198937
Anon, it's not that your drawings are particularly bad, I meant this isn't how you should be studying gestures.
You are focusing too much on delineating forms, when you should be trying to capture, well, the gesture, the movement and action, like this Anon said >>91199058

https://youtu.be/74HR59yFZ7Y
https://youtu.be/pa_2rL1K1mg

I like to practice using this site in "class mode":

https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/

It will give you a bunch of photos, giving you progressively more time to draw them. What you want to do is use the 30 second drawings to capture just the gesture, 1 minute, you start drawing the shapes of the body, and as you are given more time, you focus more and more on rendering the smaller details. The photos are not always the best to practice, but it's the best site I could find for this kind of stuff. Good luck, Anon.
>>
>>91199160
Does it work, but once you try hovering it again, does it break? Or does it not work at all?

I just tried the code, the "this.src" doesn't seem to be a problem. Maybe instead of "title=" you can use "alt=" after img src="regular image url" if you have an alt text.
>>
>>91199294

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this and as far as I can tell there are two basic tacks you can take, assuming you don't wanna go for a foreign language:
A) have the character basically say what they're doing. e.g. "ancient spirits of starch, fill my party with the energy of your hydrocarbon bonds!" or "sting with the cringe of a thousand poorly-told jokes, FURIOUS MEMORY!"
B) string together words that sound neat together. e.g. Charlie Sheen, Ben Vereen, shrink to the size of a lima bean!

nono, you can. i mean that's a nekomimi
what you can't do is give it a cat nose too. once you go that far you're in
now this one doesn't technically have fur so you're not THAT far in, but it is an unusual color for skin, and matches the cat ear interiors, so..

It's not technically a cat. The best way I can explain is that they're kind of like animal races you'd find in something like an mmo RPG. You'll notice the hair on the tail and head are different colors than the skin.

But I'll certainly continue to work on the designs. I've redone the MC at least 15 times I'd figure.

>>91209334
an interesting cyborg. pretty neat, but I feel like the diaper shape of the half-head is not really working for me. the nose strap part is awkward. still it's not the same old half face you see on every Tom, Vic, and Kano, so points for that

Have such a good premise, such great writing/characters, and such a firm grasp on the principles of paneling/composition that functional skill in art barely even matters.

People can look past shitty art for a good story, but developing a passable art style for a weak story won't get you anything.

This look awful.

I know you never listen but your style does not compare to katie rice's. Stop. Katie Rice knows anatomy and how to bend it to make something look dynamic. You don't.

Learn to draw anatomicaly correct stuff before anything. You have no sense of proportions, no sense of color theory, wonky character design. Just stop and do some research.

Your art as it is right now is repulsive, I'm not interrested in your characters, their struggles, their stories. It's not appealing.
