I thought Cinder was having a lot of doubts and a lack of self-confidence because Ruby's silver eyes wrecked her face so hard.

One thing I was irritated with but eventually came to like about Volume 4 was that they didn't tease Penny's return at the end. She's definitely coming back somehow, but I'm glad it didn't show Geppetto in his workshop with blueprints or putting together her endoskeleton and stuff.

There was way too much Blake this season. She is honestly one of the least interesting characters and despite all the effort they've put into making her likable it just isn't working. If I were running volume 4, I would have put emphasis on 3 story lines, those being Ruby, Yang, and Jaune. They suffered the most last volume and need the screen time to cope. Ruby coming to terms with her power, Yang learning how to stand on her own two feet again, and Jaune struggling to cope with the loss of his best friend. It just feels like the time they were given this season wasn't enough to complete the arcs they did. Weiss' story could be moved to the back burner and let her fester for a bit before she decides to escape next volume. Blake is just irrelevant, but whatever, give her an episode.

too slow, worldbuilding and lore was meh, threw in even more macguffins for some reason, too many characters for 15 minute episodes which left many others (including the main character of the fucking show) underdeveloped.

pacing and developing the characters you actually need to develop has always been an alien concept to the RWBY writers, don't really expect it to change.

I still feel as though Ruby and Blake are the least interesting of any group they're a part of. Whereas Blake's isn't "really" her fault (with the monkey dude stealing the spotlight), Ruby's archetype is just so lame. Weiss is alright since she's a clear archetype that kind of necessitates an emotional attachment.
My issue with this show is that Ruby is obviously the main protag and will be for the rest of this series' run (10 or so years) but Ruby is the worst character on the show. She's boring. She's predictable. Her weapon is lame. Not to mention, she can't lose cause she's the plot device so we'll never see her disappear like Pyrha did. It's just unfortunate, having a decent story with a decent universe and decent immersion. And having it all ultimately ruined by the fact that Ruby is a one-dimensional character.

But Ruby. What exactly is she doing most of the time?

I can understand and see why some people would like her. she's "endearing", she's "charming". But for the life of me, I can't stand that an interesting universe with its own idiosyncrasies has to be predicated upon such a lackluster character.

TL;DR that's why she's such a poor character. The fact that she's not objectively an enjoyable character (which i can understand, is hard to make) yet the entire storyline is contingent on her. And that's how it is, no matter how you may think it is. All the storylines ultimately converge at her. She's the leader of every group she's been in. She's the plot device. She's gifted the machina of all machinas. She's given the most effort in her creation (with the weapon design which I can admit, has nice detail).
