Let's not mince anything, Morty is a piece of shit himself. His real sister is Buff Summer, who he abandoned along with his real mom and dad because of the cronenberg shit. Rick did briefly point out how shitty it was that the world went to hell because Morty wanted to get in someone's pants but that hasn't been really pressed into Morty afterwards.

Morty was trying to stand on a soapbox with New Summer but New Summer's world was in a shitty place itself. Humanity was forced into a servile position thanks to the Galactic Government, her mom was a mess because her stupid job was made totally moot, and her real brother and grandfather are already dead. She's acting all on the motivation of "fuck you, get mine" which is one of the lessons Rick himself taught her and Morty over the time they spent together. It didn't matter to her the moral implications or even what the Cronenberg world meant; in the end all that mattered was she made HER life right again by any means necessary, just like what Morty had done when he went along with hopping universes to this current one.

Rick and Morty shows that EVERYONE is a flawed piece of shit. No one is perfect.

Rick is an amoral debauched self-centered jaded cynical crazed genius.

Summer is over emotional, constantly trying to project morality onto others, attaches too much importance to superficial things and acts condescending to almost everyone.
Beth is a terrible mother and wife, unable to stand up to or oppose Rick in any way because of her abandonment issues.
Jerry is a spineless self-important coward who defers to anyone else with more authority than him.

All the other characters are similarly flawed.
At least that's how I view all of them. I'm not trying to say they're all without virtues, quite the opposite, just that no one is perfect in this show and that's part of what makes R&M so fun to watch.

The idea that the council of Ricks purposefully goes out of their way to ruin Rick lives just to trigger them into ascending to their 'godly' state does seem like something that would happen as long as they can consolidate more power. Ricks who had some traumatic terrible thing happen in their lives could make the dimension hopping device but Ricks who don't have the same trauma won't have that epiphany. So to gain more power they put more Ricks in the same situation where they undergo a horrible trauma that spurs them on to create the dimension device.

If I had to pick only one thing truthful from that whole scenario I'd put money on that one. It also explains why our Rick hates the council as much as he does, although he probably was a naturally made miserable bastard.
