So I'm looking for a free animaiton software that pretty much revolves around using boned-structured objects (similar to flash's bone tool.) Something like the old Pivot software, but with customizable objects and a workfield like Flash.

Any suggestions?

The hips and shoulders do not attach like that. Your right and left shoulder are not the same thing, sand same goes for your leg/pelvis joints.

bone tool doesn't fucking work for character animation outside of 3d software though! it was a fucking meme!

AT BEST you can use it for mundane shit, but aside from that shit it's fucking useless.

I know bonetool is dogshit but I just want to make a medium to make animations thats not overly complicated with moving characters.

Really I just want the upper bodies mostly animated, so just to keep the arms and head from going too nuts is a plus for me

You can try Unity 3d with the anima2d asset, both are free, but you have two programs to learn if you pick that way. The results are quite decent, given enough skill:

2.5 d quality results depends directly on how much effort you put on your initial setup. Many animated shows that use 2.5d solves this by adding more angles to the character rigging. 8 angles are better than 4, and 16 angles are even better (the colorful small horses show is a good example....or even Wakfu, for maximun quality comparisson)..in the end, its a simple matter of how much effort and time you're willing to put on it.

I work at a small European animation studio and we use MOHO (previously Anime Studio). Most of the stuff we do is bone tool, vectors and smart warp. Only the most dynamic details like facial expressions, stay hairs or the character going really off model are done in TV Paint.

The animation will be only as good as the pre-rigged model. Once you've worked with these methods on a professional level you start to notice it everywhere.
