Hello, Storyteller.

Kind of a shame this book got cancelled. It'd be nice to get more female-led books with this much effort put into them.

I'd give a lot for a book in the spirit of this one to be coming out right now. I guess they think Batwoman is kind of fitting that niche but I don't care about Gotham and Bennett's not a fraction of the writer that Andreyko was on this

So, about that Mr. David....

Batwoman and Mother Panic. Both of their civilian identities and lives are well apart from Kate's here though. Both have that "female Bruce Wayne" thing going on where their excesses as socialites are cover/an outlet for their frustrations as a cape. With Kate it's basically the other way around and her civilian life is much more conventional and relatable.

I'm the angry guy shitposting about his Doom Patrol "news."

How about Mark Russell/Ben Dewey, holy shit
>>
>“The Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee Inhumans is $34.99. It’s a 304-page graphic novel. By comparison (it’s not entirely a fair comparison), Batman: The Long Halloween at 340-something pages is $24.99. Gabriel responded. Two things there, if those prices came down, we’re going to run the problem that people are going to jump from the comics just to the trades, because the trades are going to be 50 percent cheaper to buy than the comics,” he said.

>“In order to make sure that they made money, our trades had to be a little more expensive,” he said... “Now we’re in a fix, because do you want to have a $34.99 Inhumans edition out there as well as a $19.99 one? To me, that’s going to cause a lot of problems as well.
>>
>>91199391
So, Violet and Kate have definitely had a thing before, right?
>>91199423
The last two issues (and the next one) have had a different artist, and the entire tone for the book has kind of changed.
>>
>>91199423
They both actually have the family thing going on too. Like how Kate's sister (and then dad, and now mom) are supervillains. I appreciated Bennett weaving back the dad thing a bit and with Violet her family is totally bound up in her powers and quest for revenge. But neither of them is how it is here, and both are younger.
>>
>One tactic that worked on an issue that wasn’t a #1 recently was a special up-priced issue. “When we’re going from the $3.99 to the $9.99 Spider‑Man we almost tripled sales,” Gabriel pointed out.

>“Yes, there were incentives put on it. There were some variants, but to see triple sales on the $9.99 Spider‑Man book and to hear from half of the retailers saying, ‘This helped make our week,’ and then another portion of the retailers saying, ‘Shame on you Marvel for making us more money,’ we sit back. The only thing we have to look at are the numbers and comments like that. We’ll go with the numbers any day, because we’re interested in making us and you money.”

This guy in the comments put it best...

>The thing is while a higher priced special issue may raise sales, increasing the regular price doesn't have the same effect. It's the SPECIAL part that increases sales, not the higher price.

WHAT THE FUCK IS MARVEL THINKING?
>>
>>91199381
The problem is legitimate criticism became hopelessly bound up in seeing identity stuff, and identity stuff that suited the writer at that.

>>91199460
You can never step around the art. The shift and how that changed the tone was pretty big I agree.

>It was the old things coming back in that time period, three books in particular, Spider-Man Renew Your Vows, that had Spider-Man and Mary Jane married, that worked. The Venom book worked and the Thanos book worked. You can take what you want out of who might be enjoying those three books, but it is definitely a specific type of comic book reader, comic book collector that really liked those three series.

>>
That Marvel guy's a fucking idiot. He said that since Wizard is no more you can't have A list artists anymore besides few since audience doesn't have a top 10 list and artists can't move the needle. Well maybe if you put a talent on an A list book and that's not double shipping and let him do his work there for a few years, maybe.....
I dunno, that's a PR disaster of a stupidly enormous scale if I've seen one. You're not only insulting your readers but your artists/potential artists and other professionals as well.
>>
>>91199650

So I asked a Finn, who said "Well, the translations are excellent and that's much of the appeal, but it's also an entrenched cultural thing that's immensely popular, and it has a lot to do with our culture of literacy." And looking at this astounding database for the comics, two things hop out:

1) the cartooning is charming but simple, far simpler than what we take for granted in a Big Two cape book
2) they're anthos and accordingly they pull from a lot of older material. So there may be 4 pages of a running story new for the antho, 6 pages of classic Carl Barks, and pages of something from a Dutch Donald Duck mag newly translated.

>>91199678
we can do that

I mean I'll stan for anthologies I wish there was more of an audience for those in America. There are some real advantages to an anthology format in what you can provide, sell, get people interested in.

But the right comparison there is more like specifically to Batman or Superman or something than comics as a whole, and they're not an institution in the same way either.
>>
>>91199448
I posted in the thread about this already, but I'm pretty sure this is the result of someone in upper management taking too much money at some point. All the other companies can sell cheaper than them without it cutting into their other sales dramatically. It's a fucking lie that they couldn't as well.
>>
>>91199575
The progressive audience you're aiming for with these books (females mainly and pic) aren't fucking interested in going to a comic shop where neck beard nerds come to circle jerk about their favorite white male protagonist. Maybe Marvel should find a new and better way of delivering these books to the intended audiences? And I'm really serious about the last part.

>>

Hey. All the good will Didio may have gained in desperately keeping this, frankly unpopular, book alive kinda went out the windows with all the other decisions he was making concurrently, which were mostly awful.

And then with the Wally trolling.

>>91199889
The murder artist was kind of abruptly dumped after issue #3. I assume they come back sometime soon. Right now it's about Violet finding another student

Antho format is such a hard sell right now and I don't really see any way of changing it. And I really don't think there's a good way to sell cape readers on an antho of what honestly reads half like Sunday morning strips.

I think you need to have history to do anthologies. You can do it in Europe (including Britain) and Japan but it's always been there in these places. Whenever they try it in America it bombs. There's a definite value vs. content part to it with US prices too.

Also, a pre-existing and thus likely cheap backlog of material is an essential resource for doing an antho. I think you're right that it has mostly to do with publishing inertia/tradition. Disney anthos have been running in Europe since the late 50s, they're iconic.

I'm not surprised by it and I don't see things changing because the hate bandwagon has picked up too much speed.

You know how everyone just hated and shat on New 52 for years even after most of the problems were addressed, and it wasn't until the big marketing push with Rebirth that it turned around? I think that's repeating itself now and it'll be a few years before Marvel redeems itself in the eyes of many.

When people want to hate you, no matter what you do they'll twist it into another reason to hate you. I haven't read that thread but I'm guessing it's more full of people laughing at Marvel than actually being excited.
>>
>>91200048
Ages too. If you've more of a kids market running reprints is a lot more tolerable.

I mean even with >>91199630 the Judge Dredd Megazine, which is like a monthly companion to 2000AD + interviews reviews and shit. They've run reprints for at least a decade now but they've moved to this format where you get the reprint as like a mini TPB alongside the book and they do either a whole shorter comic or a long arc of one of the big ones. That's great but for a very particular market and circumstance.

A lot of people buying X superhero tomorrow would likely not be that interested in reading the same character as of 30 years ago and paying for it.

I've got a weird set-up nearby me where I have this musty old shitheap LCS, run by 1 guy and has been for 30 years, crappy opening hours, rarely clean, dude writes his own comic, generally sells single issues and RIGHT NEXT DOOR a much cleaner sparser shop run by a woman in her 20s mainly selling famous TPBs, board games, t-shirts and merchandise.

I have had much better help looking for specific stuff in the first store but I would rather shop at the second store 100% of the time.

Not that guy you replied, but I agree with him except that I wouldn't really blame the lack of Wizard magazine.

It's more comics are expensive and nobody really does long runs anymore and can't really build up a devoted fanbase.
Snyder, Johns, Lee, and maybe Capullo and Bendis are the only ones I can think of that "move the needle". You can tell DC is trying with King and sort of Janin, and Marvel is trying with Spencer and sort of Ewing.

It's really a bunch of different factors coming together at once for several months. Alienation of reader base, over-saturation of the market with formulaic titles, too much gambling on new readers getting hooked, and that's even before touching on the economics/distribution side of it.

For a company that has been using DIVERSITY as it's MO lately, there really isn't much diversity in their "diverse" books. The teenage girls are almost adults when it comes to maturity, and the women are womenchildren. Is there a female equivalent for manchild? Point is, some of these grown women leading Marvel's books are less mature than some of the teenagers.

And for another example, let's play a game.
Name a character in Marvel that has appeared in the last three years that can be described as "conservative" who isn't "an antagonist" or "U.S. Agent".

And with that in mind, I ask you this: Why doesn't she do that? And the answer is that she was put in charge of SHIELD specifically to be an obstructive authority figure who serves the purpose of being wrong.

If she started doing cool shit and displaying competence, it would make the capes look bad. Fury has lots of fans because he did cool shit, and Maria has plenty of people who agree with the Pleasant Hill idea. So of course it had to blow up two minutes later because she HAS to be wrong all the time because authority figures are bad.

I like Maria because she's an entertainingly smarmy asshole who's willing to call out the heroes on their self-righteous bullshit. But I'd really love if she was allowed to provide some real conflict by doing something that actually matters.

Foolkiller seems like an easy pitch to anyone who liked good Deadpool, Superior Foes (and there possibly Thunderbolts) and the rare fan of the Gerber mini for sure. I dunno how big that market is.

You could have pushed it along with the Kingpin stuff, and from there maybe to fans of other Rosenberg stuff like 4 Kids.

Speaking of niche recs, have you had time to watch/play Drakengard 3, Storyteller?

I don't mean to nag, cause I understand that you have way more important bills-paying shit to do, I'm just curious on your thoughts.

Marvel is also in general cutting books really, really fast these days. Illuminati, Howling Commandos--Mockingbird didn't get more of a shot than they did, or less of one.

There was an entire arc in Brubaker Cap where he hazed the fuck out of Bucky.
Or is he referring to flashback Zemo, who doesn't really exist? Remember, Helmut has no idea what Steve is talking about, but is basically just glad that they can finally be together.

To be fair, she was modeled after Angelina Jolie, so it may be both.

Yes, I know quake was explicitly modeled after her, but seriously, put the two together, ditch Quake's gauntlets, and they're practically identical.

Leth got a pretty big leash on Hellcat for the standards of today and that book. I was actually wondering about that with Marvel's economics, like how much they paid Leth, how much did they pay Natasha Allegri for her issue on art, etc. What does the cost of these books look like relative to others?

Oh man, finally a detailed article about the Young Animal Panel at Wondercon today:

http://www.comicon.com/2017/03/31/rocking-the-fringe-of-the-dcu-young-animal-at-wondercon-with-gerard-way-jody-houser-cecil-castellucci-jon-rivera/

Sounds like there might be a crossover in the works. That could be a disaster with the delays that those books have.

Nice reaction shot, Kate.

Also, I couldn't help but notice that Andreyko is the writer for all of this stuff. Was he the only one interested or what? I mean, it gives her a consistent voice, but it's a little sad that only her creator ever gave a shit about her.

As a character Hellcat would be an interesting choice for that kind of gamble given that most normies have only seen a version of her on the Netflix show. Not exactly kid-friendly.

But the Hellcat book has no resemblance to the JJ show in tone or content. That's what I mean, so little matches up. All the books feel skewed.
