If you do give it a go, for God's sake, give it at least to episode 2. Episode 1 is really rough, but it's trying to establish a fuck ton of shit in 20 minutes. After that, enjoy the cryptid hunting each episode. Things that seem confusing, I promise, will make sense later.

Again, it's not an orgasmic show, there are definitely bumps here and there, but it's FAR more competent than you probably think it is.

I watched the second movie a couple of years ago when it was still on Netflix. As far as I know, she just likes modern clothes better. In the scene where she changes her outfit, she just says something like "Did someone call me? I thought I heard someone call me." before realizing she was in her old timey clothes.

She doesn't get a phone until the 3rd movie, which as far as I know, was never subbed, so I have no idea about it.

It's actually got some creative use of different cultural mythologies, some decent action sequences and set peices and some really amusingly grim horror stuff, and monsters.

And it's a serialized story to boot.

These are also horribly undercut by the wacky dinosaur and the awful voice acting, though, which could be used in a neat juxtaposed way, like, goofy cartoon people in a horrible world, but instead just comes off super dissonant.

It's not bad. Just not great. Expect threads to just circlejerk the girl though.

I love a show that can skillfully combine a monster-of-the-week format with a larger arc and I thought Legend Quest did it very well. Gravity Falls, in comparison, felt more disjointed. I love GF, but plenty of episodes contributed nothing to the journal mystery. I suppose the short season length helped LQ in this regard.

There were a few parts that felt a bit unpolished. The ghosts didn't use their ghost powers enough. Them getting stuck in a hole in episode 9 ("Nu Gui") felt contrived. "Sorry Leo.
