Based on AT's arc it will be more like nosediving after the fourth season, having erratic bursts of quality throughout the 5th and 6th, then it gradually rises to a respectable plateau for the rest of the show.

Steven has not forgotten anything, neither has the crew. They are well aware of the secrets they seeded.
Steven feels that he has to do something, become something, be worthy of his mother. But he just doesn’t know what or how.
Rose had someone plant the tape after Steven's birth or planted it late into the pregnancy when they knew he would be a boy.
Lion is doing this shit deliberately and is being a dick about the dripfeed for shits and giggles.

I think this is a setup for Steven finding his answer in the form of Homeworld returning or something like that. That will be the (mid-)season finale.

That might be the case. Season 4 doesn't really have any kind of focus, and while S3 only got intense towards the end that's because it was the second half of the original season 2.

Well, we have seen Lion eat Steven's sushi-ish thingies in the short, so there is precedent that he will eat small objects compulsively.
Maybe he ate the shards and got infected like Frybo, gaining his powers but retaining general control while PD tries to steer Steven towards something with only limited influence and fractured conscience.
This would explain the erratic behavior of Lion. It's actually a big, lazy cat wrestling with a shattered Diamond for control.

I'm convinced that Steven is not the person who will save everyone. Not without the whole thing being garbage for it anyway. Aside from the mix of powers he inherited which is no big deal considering what we have seen. Really the best way to "fix everything" is for Pink Diamond pulling a Rose stunt before Rose did what she did and brought Steven to life. There has to be an antithesis to Steven so as to show the conflict between two similar beings who hold a different view of the Earth which would probably be similar to the way Pink Diamond and Rose would have had.
Then after a brief battle, a realization would come from Pin Diamond's son that he doesn't have to be his mom and that Steven is not his mom either.
This way you get a redemption of a diamond who will be the basis of the redemption of the other diamonds because he will still be a diamond and the Earth will technically be his.
Not only that, but the diamonds or possibly just pink diamond's son will be the main reason the other corrupted gems could be healed.
You could say that the way Steven is, is what allowed everything to come together, but he certainly is no bad ass hero who will save the day.
