I found it to be idiotic. Here they wanted another "strong female character" to market when they failed to realize they had one already. Which I know the Oracle persona was basically salvaging from a shock moment in Killing Joke, but really it was a good progression for the character. Avengers is a fun movie, but all of Whedon's flaws are way more noticable in Age of Ultron, especially since that one tries to go for an overall more serious tone than Avengers did.

Black Widow is reduced to "the girl", Tony Stark acts like a total lunatic, Captain America does nothing but make jokes about how wholesome/Murrican he is, Banner has nothing to do but give Natasha someone to talk to, Thor pisses off for half the movie to promote Ragnarok, and Hulk just rehashes all the stuff he did in Avengers, but worse.

The only characters who get some good characterization in that movie are Hawkeye, Vision, and Rhodey and they all take a backseat to the more popular, more poorly-written heroes.
