I can name very very few examples of white male / minority female pairings in media nowadays. Peter died at the Midtown Senior Prom, two years prior to the start of the book. Meaning Gwen was either 17 or 18 at this time, since Harry wanted to go with her. Harry was definitely 18, because that's how old you need to be to sign yourself up for the Army. Gwen and Peter were both most likely in the same grade as him, since she described them all as being close to the point of being inseparable.
