I always assumed that it wasn't forgotten so much as it wasn't really discussed.

Honestly, as much as I enjoyed the show, it doesn't really have the depth to keep going over it like other shows. It was a fun little "mission of the week" show without a great deal of continuity between episodes until post-movie. The characters were charming, the humor was alright, and the whole thing has settled into a comfortable little pocket of nostalgia in the back of my brain, where I remember it fondly but don't really feel the desire to revisit it.

I've tried watching the original and I honestly find that the only thing worthwhile about it is the backstory of the characters' parents. The rest of the cast are comparatively dull to the point that I legitimately find the dub's boisterous attempts to make the show seem way more epic and action packed actually make it more entertaining, and this is coming from someone who loves magical girl shows in general. I just don't think Clamp are good enough writers in general, in spite of the show's fantastic production values.
