Season 2's biggest flaw: not enough Toffee

Good points: pretty much everything else once it got past the early-season awkwardness

was looking at some of the threads made here not long after the end of Season 1. nearly all the complaints (outside of more subjective stuff like individual jokes) about plot/character development were corrected, and things fans wanted explored like the setting and wand got more focus. we even got canon confirmation about things only implied before like Ludo being monster royalty, when that could've just been a fan invention to answer the "how does this loser have a castle" question that's been asked since early Season 1

I have NEVER shipped before but Star and Marco's development throughout the series makes ME want to ship them. I look at other shows with romance sub plots and not a single one has convinced me the final pairing was justified. None.

To me, it seems Daron has combined the best aspects of both western animation and anime to create something I genuinely feel is unique. I can guarantee you future successful shows will credit Star Vs for their success.

The romance in Star Vs is different than other cartoons for three reasons.

- The love interest (Marco) is one of the two lead characters, so episodes that don't focus on romance still focus on the relationship between the two since they're lead characters

- Star and Marco's relationship is heavily focused on and is a huge part of the show, unlike other cartoons that try to get romance involved when it's not as important

- The lead is a girl, when usually most cartoons focus mainly on just the male MCs girl troubles

It was great how Ludo and Glossaryck went from being considered some of the worst characters to some of the best.

Glossaryck especially is much more interesting when you realize he's not the spirit of the spellbook or permanently bound to it, but this mysterious powerful godlike being who's seen it all and is probably playing everyone but also just acts like an unhelpful gross fuck because he can.

If I'm being real Toffee actually probably dropped down a bit for me because they did a great job with so many other characters. Especially Star but she's always been well liked so this development was a bonus.

Don't be put off by the first couple episodes if you're not really feeling it. Don't skip them either though; they're still important.

The show begins really showing its potential in the sixth full episode (11th segment). By the 8th full episode the execs responsible for the early episodes feeling too episodic and generic have left and the show begins coming into its own.

The second season builds on everything the first season has set up and handles everything you'd expect and more well. It's a massive improvement overall despite a couple weak episodes near the beginning.

First few episodes are pleb filters. If you're a pleb then you'll drop it, if you survive those you'll get to Mewberty, which is the turning point of the series. Still however, fillers and bad characters abound but by the time of the Blood Moon Ball, the series starts ramping up and becomes better by Fortune Cookies.

Season 2 is more consistent with good and great episodes, "filler" is there but but they are more often in-between plot/romantic/story/development/lore episodes, especially in the beginning of the season, and season 2 has unusual amount of crazy homeless old women that Star meets in them. Anyway, yeah it gets good when it wants to and really fucking great when it needs to. At the height of its powers, I would consider Bonbon the Birthday Clown one of the best and most tightly constructed episodes this series has.

Some of the more generic episodes of the first season have their names under story credit, and the fact that they developed it for television and possibly conceived of some things like Alfonzo and Ferguson makes me a bit suspicious of their influence.

Also Nate Federman, who wrote the story outlines for gamechanging episodes like Fortune Cookies and Mewnipendence Day, among others, seems to have played a major role in the show gettin gud too, and he was around from the beginning of the first season.

Hammersley and Bisignano were some of the best people to happen to the show for sure, but I don't think their influence really became significant until Daron put them in higher positions in 2. Which was indeed because of their work on 1, but it seems to me they made it good despite limitations placed on it from early on.

I'm not really trying to make them look bad or anything; I just don't think it's coincidence that they literally left in the middle of the first season, and the show then became more plot-driven and interesting and ambitious in practically one episode.

Daron was apparently working as co-executive producer alongside them for that first half, and then would have been the only one in charge from then to the present. Again, don't want to over or understate anyone's role here, but I just wonder if they may have held her back a bit or if she deferred to their seniority or something when they were around.

Blood Moon Ball definitely. That shit was originally "demon prom." I don't know whose idea that was, hell it could've been Nefcy's, but it sounds like garbage and exactly the kind of shallow high school/shipping kids' show that I don't think this show has ever been (it's def a dumb kids' comedy but it isn't about relationships as THE most important thing).

I think their credits on Mewnipendence Day/Storm the Castle were more just having a role in shaping the story and the impact it would later have on the series (maybe with Daron recognizing how they'd done a good job on BMB they were seen as being able to influence episode plots too?) but not totally reworking it the way they did with Mewberty.
