Dumping samples of Big George, an obscure newspaper comic by magazine cartoonist Virgil "Vip" Partch.
It ran from 1960 to 1990, six years after Partch's passing. You see, when he and his wife were killed in a traffic accident in 1984, he was six years ahead of schedule on "Big George". It ended in 1990, but only because his last contract for the syndicate was expiring and sales were waning. In fact, there was actually about a month or two of further material that was never published.
Apologies in advance for the poor print quality of some of the daily panels and Sunday strips.

Sounds like old Virgil was living the dream
Reading this gives me an odd feeling of saudade, never seen them before and it belongs to a time I never experienced in another country, yet there's a kind of nostalgia
>>91134041
This artstyle reminds me of the Moomins as much as anything else.

Thanks OP, I always enjoy seeing old newspaper strips, even if they aren't the most thrilling things in the world. It's interesting to see how art style and humor changes over time.

Thanks op these are pretty cute. Can't believe he was six years+ ahead of schedule

Having a sizable buffer used to be pretty standard from what I understand though not so much in recent decades.
I think Russel Myers who does Broom Hilda used to be about two years ahead at any given moment.

Dang, some of these are actually pretty funny. Most comic strips writers can't really sustain a back-and-forth like these Sundays do.
>>91141259

This was all very charming and quite witty at times.
Thanks, OP.

It's funny that the wife's antique obsession is played up as a nuisance in the comic, but the artist obviously loves drawing them.
These Big George strips are pretty good. I like how expressive the characters are. This guy's work looks like he loved cartooning.
Also, the wife is cute.
I wonder if Fantagraphics would ever consider trying to collect and reprint Partch's output.

>that face when 50 y/o and have literally never heard of this thing until right this minute.

I think the 60s/70s is when they started to pick really fucking tall people to play basketball, as in "Doesn't really know how to play but is so fuckhuge it doesn't really matter"

They put out a gorgeous biography/retrospective a couple years back entitled "Vip: The Mad World of Virgil Partch" but I really wish they'd do something with Big George. Either them or IDW with their "Library of American Comics" series.
>>91157086
>>91161178
Actually googling now, they did put out a collection of his alcohol-themed cartoons titled "Cork High, Bottle Deep", but I don't think you can buy it on Fantagraphics' main website anymore. You'd have to try Amazon.
