I honestly don't see how someone who takes things so seriously could ever appreciate the original show to begin with, even by 80s show standards that shit was goofy

The 87 TMNT only went full retrd in the movie when they were acting as a group ("Noogies!" "Revenge of the Noogies!" etc.)

Their individual interactions were all written well in-character. 87 Fags are just... Well, fags.

Well, it doesn't bother to get the albeit goofy characterizations of the 87 turtles right, spends all it's time undermining the original show with a black and white sledgehammer message of "This old cartoon is goofy and stupid, and OUR cartoon is awesome and cool", 4kids was a dickhole organization that refused to let the original actors come back, etc. etc. Even the good jokes/cracks against the 87 cartoon gets lost in the process, and the film wasn't really willing to take a crack at the 03 turtles.

If you enjoyed the 87 show, even a little, this came off as kind of insulting. Sure, it was a goofy 80s cartoon, but people still grew up with it and have an attachment to it; apart from being bad in the first place it's why alot of TF fans hate the Bayformers movies. You can expect negative feedback when you bill this cartoon as some awesome match-up/conclusion to the series (BOTH series if it weren't for Nickelodeon) and then spend everything but the third act of the movie belittling one half of the team-up.

The payoff was that the edgiest turtles, the ones from the original comics, thought the 87 turtles were a bunch of cool guys, while the 2k3 turtles were a bunch of lame try-hards.

Okay, fair point, but if that was the intended lead up/punchline of the whole film, they did a pretty lackluster job of making it seem like the 87 turtles came out on top compared to the extent they were ridiculed through the entire rest of the film.

Or you could read it as "the originals are cooler than EVERYBODY...."
