How would you even describe the 'feel' of Problem Sleuth/Early Homestuck to people?

Video game mechanics in real life taken to logical conclusions? Abstract complexity for no reason?

How would you even be able to have a 'game' that emulates this feeling? It's presented in game-like terms with reader suggestions, and follows many game type mechanics but it's fucking bizarre.

You don't have to spin some wish-fulfillment yarn about the trolls being isolated or outright removed from the comic to save Homestuck from becoming a monument to one man's hubris and ineptitude. You don't even have to get rid of Act 6 as a whole. If he hadn't been so god damned arrogant, we'd all be happier now.

One of the biggest meta disappointments in this comic is the importance of retcon powers as well as Caliborn's hijacking of the narration in Act 6. I love Caliborn and the segments where he is focal in the swamp that was Act 6 to start but Caliborn also is the one who 'wrote' and finished Honestuck's narrative. Things he predicted before it happened (Davekat, Davepeta) seemingly become true to us, the readers, and even Act 7 can arguably be a culmination of this meta narrative context all tying in with the 'learn to draw anime book'. It's all funny and tongue in cheek, but I think the main takeaway is this:

Caliborn ultimately wins in the metanarrative. The reason the relationships, the kids inconsistencies, the derailed character arcs; they all mark towards Caliborn's design of how the comic ends.

And the problem is that's exactly what happens. The Juju and John, despite having powers that could tear fated predestination a new one, instead plays directly into the set path. John is surrounded by better drawn Homosuck representations of the people he knew but the effects are so subtle he doesn't notice how wrong it all is. Gifted the keys to his and his friends freedom, he instead is enslaved by the whim of the Lord of Time and summarily Muse of Space, incapable of breaking the mold and dragging an insane happy ending from Homestuck's meta-mangled corpse.

Yeah as much as I lament the lack of Doc Scratch-Caliborn conversations, with the state of Homestuck's writing, their absence might have been for the best.

Anyway, some actual discussion material: despite the amount of animal-people in the story, we never saw Taurus mind control getting used on a sapient being (or on anything plot relevant at all past Act 5, considering GCAT's fate). Except that one panel where Jade turned Grimbark but it was apparently a one time "switch flip", not a constant use.

Were you expecting anything? I thought it'd have been a cool way to keep Jade under control AND somehow awake for the heartfelt reunion, assuming either a visit to the dream bubble Nitrams or Tavros coming back to life.

There are many things in Homestuck you could be angry about, but why Tavros? He had more potential as a character than Kanaya and ended up with one of the most satisfying arcs in the comic.
(Which isn't to say a *good* arc, he was just part of the 10% of the cast that didn't just stagnate, regress or become miserable.)

Dream bubbles were an okay concept, they became cancerous when they started getting narrative focus and influencing the main plot.
But the real problem isn't the afterlife, if there had been none it wouldn't have changed much. It's all those characters who refused to fucking stay dead at all.

I'd like to think that from the start Hussie tried to create a story about how fate can't be escaped even when you think you've found an out. You raise a great point about John being surrounded by better drawn versions of the Homosuck characters, I never caught that one. I always figured that the story was more about "Fate is what you make of it" considering the skaian cloud only shows a enough info to lead the people to the path and the idea that while you will know what you're doing and why you're doing it when you reach that point, this point was kinda implied when Terezi did the coinflip thing with save which caused him to split the timeline because he was uncertain about being god-tier. This idea could have played with the retcon pretty well if it was handled in a way that acted more of a butterfly effect where john just nudge the remain survivors with a single action and watch everything fall in to place rather then having vriska fix everything.

Unless you follow the exact whims of fate your session will not bear fruit, you and your friends will die and either become irrelevant or only serve to further the "true" Alpha session. If you're talking about the other SBURB players around the world, I thought of it as they were never intended to win, only the kid's session was meant to bear fruit. The only reason I think this is due to the fact that SGURB is only played by the trolls, since it was compiled from code Sollux or whoever found in the frog ruins, so there was no need for the game to be spread to others. But since the kids never had any exceptional circumstances like that, save for Jade, the easiest way for it to be distributed to them would be via worldwide distribution.

Well yeah, because it's too fucking complex.

The problem is that Sburb is Hussie's intellectual property, like it or not. So the game would be most popular if it stuck to the Sburb formula. However, anyone who wants to make the game get 'big' or potentially put all their work into a sellable project would need to distance it from Sburb a bit, but then it would be less popular with fandom.

Secondly, and more importantly, many of the free-form elements of the game, such as NPC interactions, dialogue, aspects and crafting, would have to be severely limited to be coded in. You could implement some weak systems of 'oh add bouncy object to hammer weapon to create a bouncy hammer' sort of thing but it's still not as visually and mechanically interesting as the actual comic. Which is natural, because its a story.

The other thing is that Sburb's primary mode of play, as in having a server and client players means that you won't easily be able to play the game unless you relied on shitty AI or the player would have to be given the tools to build their own home, which greatly limits the shenanigans. You could try to implement actual netcode into this so you can play with others, but that just adds to the complexity.

However truthfully I don't think it's necessarily impossible. It's pretty easy to imagine a Sims-like building system where you just have unlimited upwards space to build to reach the gates and the like.

Dave points out near the end that in a lot of ways Rose's development seems tailor fit to her shitty quest, as if Rose WANTED a shitty planet to rebel against, because she was a rebellious 13 year old girl.

Ergo Caliborn isn't the product of some grand cosmic narrative, he's just an asshole who was so determined to become the big bad that he twisted all of reality to make that happen. And whoopty doo, he in the end faces off against not the actual heroes, but the queen bitch who twisted all of reality to become the big hero.

When you resign yourself to failure, you are doomed to fail. It is only when you stop letting yourself be bound by what others expect of you, bound by your origins, Home Stuck if you will, that you can truly learn to become free.

For our heroes, that meant giving up on all this nonsense, and living out peaceful lives, rather than trying to play hero. It, for them, meant actually growing up. If only it wasn't so poorly written.

There may be more information on Hussie's formspring. Basically Skaia desires the creation of universes and the Horrorterrors oppose this, which is why Derse, the kingdom that represents their side, finds frogs to be disgusting symbols. They are locked in a stalemate (as represented by the light and dark army associated with them) until the players enter. The game is a way for them to settle the conflict, using the players as ways to tip the balance.

God. I loved all this lore, it would have made for such a great story on its own. I miss it.
