Johnny begins his story by saying RJ doesn't go around discussing his identity and then immediately proceeds to discussing his identity which involves a wide-eyed kid getting a magazine tossed into their face. At the very, at the very fucking least, the background of the event adds a bit of that weird setting flavor to the story. Like Max's reminiscence of stunt public access shows. The page easily refluffs as explaining their bizarre faceless and voicelessness without much trouble.

But good god is it probably the worst written page in the comic.

It reads almost exactly like the cliche "oh man, what is this very special topic. Please explain it to me and bring the narrative rhythm to a screeching fucking halt." There's no flow to it. No naturalness. And despite Zack's no doubt emphatic protestations, it's really not a major point in the comic. The comic up until now has pretty much done nothing to justify this quick swerve into "let me explain to you dear reader" nonsense. This world is so devoid of identity conflict, it almost seems unbelievable Isaac wouldn't immediately just go "sure." It's like trying to inject transangst into Questionable Content when the world is basically a queer Utopia already.

It doesn't help that this chapter is already trying to juggle too much shit. Honestly, as much as I'm shitting on it, this is by far not the worst sort of example of this. Most of it is taken up with weird Metal setting building, as mentioned before. But the comic has just been on a technical downslide for so long and is so poorly handling its current arcs timewise that it really sticks out.

The shift in drama from comedy reflects the downfall of the author from a 19 year old spoofing his black-and-white Conan comics to a depressed middle aged man who felt like the world was against him. I always wanted to do a werewolf character, DnD or otherwise, where the character has an aberration of the disease that actually changes them from a male into a female (assuming the werewolf transformation is permanent). The character is initially revealed as slim, svelte male, until it's eventually revealed that they were wearing a binder and using incense to mask their scent. Although mentally, he's still attracted to women, but physically, his body is aroused by males and regularly goes into heat. That's not how it works. You can't call a character straight if he did not show his sexuality yet. The thing is that this is somewhat inserted in some way in the media, even if just a hint. But you can't call it straight when the character literally did nothing like that.

Steven Universe is having the exact same problem. It used to be about a kid hunting monsters with his alien aunts. Now it's just filler.

It would benefit the story if Zack wrote a script out of the chapter in advance and only made slight tweeks, maybe add in a new page or so every now and then based off fan reaction.

Of course this would mean actually advancing the story, and not just pump out filler page after filler page and drag conversations and scenes on for numerous pages after what is necessary for them.
