She was honestly kinda cute in that era of Popeye. Certainly not the worst port available to them. Even Bluto wasn't just a fat tub of lard and was... handsome-ish. Actually made sense that he could steal her, and would actually want to, and Popeye had to prove he was the better choice (or just beat up the alternative).

Well, in Segar's comics, following Popeye's introduction, the Oyl family got *rich as fuck* thanks to Castor Oyl, (Olive's Brother) and his schemes involving using a good luck bird to make a clean sweep of an island casino. Popeye not only sailed the Oyl siblings to the island, he helped save their fortune once or twice.

And then Segar wrote him out of the strip for a couple weeks until the fans demanded their new favorite character come back. Popeye lost his share of the casino winnings thanks to an unseen gold digger and showed up broke again according to the sailor himself He ended up falling for Olive and was one of her many suitors. Popeye's intentions are portrayed as honorable/he honestly likes her, but there were a ton of dudes who wanted to drill for some of that Oyl money.
